The World Masters thread must surely have piqued some interest in track running from those who've never done it before. Well if you're in Brisbane or surrounds, here's your chance. Encouraged by Swaggererer earlier this year, I decided to have a go at this time of year. I did, ran 3,000m a few weeks ago. Loved it, and hope to get most races of the season in. 10,000m tomorrow.

They're a very welcoming bunch of athletes. All ages, all standards. I was being lapped, and I was lapping others. All in together and, although there are some very fine athletes there, all standards are represented. It's certainly not at all 'elitist' as one might imagine (as I once imagined).

So rock up and avvago! You don't need to join the club, you can run (or jump, or throw) as a visitor. And the luxury! Hot showers. Ahhhh.

How old do you have to be to be a "master"? And do you have to be a member of a club or anything?

Balri all the info you need is in this link.  http://www.mastersathletics.com.au/

For the Come and Try day you don't have to be a member.  To my undestanding anyone can run the non-championship meetings. You have to be 30 to join Queensland Masters Athletics (QMA).

Hope that foot of yours is healing well.

Cheers,
Ronnie.

I had initially planned to do the 10,000m tomorrow, if I was on track for sub-40 but I've trashed that idea now.  I'll keep it in mind for the future though (I'm away Oct 31).

People under 30 are welcome too, I believe.

Might keep this in mind, havn't run on a track for 20 something years. BT i'll get you to pace me to a sub 11 3000m, or will that be a bit slow for you these days? On account of the performance enhancing bypass.

Cheers

I left it too late to 'bump' the thread. Didn't see any CR runners apart from swaggerer, mainly being blown by the wash each time he lapped me. I was happy, took half a minute off my 3,000m time.

However! It doesn't need to be 'come and try day' for you to come and try. There's a 5,000m on 7 Nov, 3,000m on 14 Nov and 10,000m on 21 Nov. It would be good to see some of you reprobates have a go.

Well done on the PB, BT.  30s is a hefty chunk to take off.

I probably won't get to these now, as I take the kids along to Sherwood Runners, which is at the same time.

*BUMP*

3,000m tomorrow. Come on some of you 5k-10k-HM types, this will help your speed. It will all be over before it hurts too much.

And you can have the fun of lapping me ...

OK you slack-arses. The last meet of the year next Saturday 19th December.

There's a 3,000m which would be a good hit-out for you longer distance runners to get a feel for a shorter, sharper, faster run.

See you there!

Slacko.  Hope you enjoyed your morning with the old-codgers.   BT seemed quite proud to have lured another CR to each and every individuals' own little Field of Ne Plus Ultra.

Hey BT. Two CRs at old codgers (Masters).  That can't be good for my mental health.   Arrrh well, back to the basket weaving.  (I be kidding).

Merry Christmas to all and especially those lurkers who are stlll thinking about coming out for a run. Hope to see you all on Jan. 16.

Cheers,
Ronnie.

Bellthorpe - thanks a lot for giving me the necessary encouragement to get to the track today!!!!

Yes - I did enjoy it - and Jan 16th has been written in my diary!!!

As has the need for some more speed sessions between now and then ........... had to be a PB for me today - never run a 3000m before - or run on a track for that matter ..... BUT - I vow to do better next time!!!!!!

Swaggerer - I have been a classic lurker - but can endorse what fun it is to attend an old codgers meeting - hopefully more CR lurkers will crawl out of their shells on Jan 16th!!!!

I might even try a 1500m as well next time - lol

Cheers and thanks guys

If I can "semi hijack" this thread, Bellthorpe, the same applies for other states such as Victoria, where I am.
I joined Masters about six years ago and it has been a great move for me. As you say, there is always someone faster and slower than you. We have lots of members who are not especially fit, some who only stroll around but enjoy it nevertheless.
It is a chance to do other events. As a funrunner/solo jogger I never got the chance to run on a track and in particular, do sprints. The field events can be a lot of fun, and offer an equal opportunity for those carrying a bit of weight.
The hidden benefit is the people you meet. There are a lot of great people at Masters, and I have made a lot of friends and always have someone to train with.

If you are over 30 in Victoria, take a look at the V.M.A. website
http://vicmastersaths.org.au/
there are plenty of venues.

Alas, I couldn't make it, even though as late as Friday night I thought I would.

I emailed the webmaster a few days after the event you attended, have no reply. I assume it's a one man band, and that he's on holidays still.

There's always next week!

I have backed up on a number of occasions to do the middle distance after the long race. My splits for the 800 and 1500 are no faster than my splits in the first 800 or 1500 of the long race...this is clearly why I am a distance runner...I have only 1 speed

I think even at my pace I should be able to fit a nap in between events.
I was looking at the program again today and might have a crack at the steeplechase too, I wouldn't be any chop at the field events.
Even less so than the track stuff.

Looking at the results from last year, I'll be aiming to beat the 65year olds.  :unknw:   :(
(It'll remind me of running at Sherwood I suppose)

I will be there tomorrow morn for the 5000m. Would run the 800m but can't wait two hours. Definatley no one speed for me. Being 6 ft 1 and 85kgs much better suited the shorter events

Well that was OK.
Got rolled by Bellthorpe.
I certainly have to work on pacing for next time I do it.
Got through 3000 in 13:41 struggled through the next 5 laps and finished up with 23:30 (self timed).
Having a look at my profile, that would be a new 5k PB :unknw:

Thanks Bellthorpe for bringing this to my attention and showing me up around today.

Well done Tyno, tough conditions to do a PB in! Quite a good time considering how far from xmas we are. Just think of what you could get that down to by the time the nice cold weahter kicks in. Is a sub 20 too far of a reach?

Good to see you out there on the track for the first time TynoMite. I reckon you ran well!

I've learned a lot about pacing, as you mention, since I started this track caper.

And Glenda, great to see you running again. For someone who just a couple of months ago thought she might never run again, you looked pretty darned fast!

I've never run 5k before, so I'd set a conservative target of 24m. I did 23:23, and was happy with that. My lap times did not vary any more than a second on each lap.

3,000m next week people ...

How did you go?

I was at Sherwood Runners again, although 5 minutes late after running there.

Whew man was it tough out there this morning. It was great to meet Bellthorpe in person and here his story of his heart attack last year and to see him run 23 mins for 5km WOW! Great effort mate. It was also good to speak to Adrian and watch Dennis fly around the track and lap me I think 3 or 4 times.

I should be back for the 3000m next week. 3km is exactly where I felt like stopping this morning.

Great to see you RHCP! You ran well. Hope you can get there more often.

Adrian was flying!

It'a a pity there were so few people running today. Perhaps the humidity kept them away? Still, I always enjoy it.

I agree, the weather looked dodgy all morning, but I decided to go to my first Masters day and thoroughly enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere.
I was undecided all morning whether to use blocks, but seeing as no one else did I also went with the standing start.
I am happy with a – 55.95 400m, I would have liked more runners to push me the last 80m as I really hit the wall on the final straight, but the positive thing is that it allowed me to run my own race which was great.

Good to catch up with Bellthorpe & RHCP26 at the 5k.
The humidity made it tough out there.
Not sure when I'll be back but it would be good to see some of the Brissy runners support QMA.

Yeah mate if i get up on time i will do the 3km as im confident of breaking 12 and can then cross that goal off the list.
If not i am thinking of doing  - 60m, 100m, long jump, high jump, javelin and will put my hand up for the 400m relay if needed.
To any other Brisbane runners thinking of having a go, i highly reccomend it as there is all ages, shapes and abilities so definately not as daunting as a regular allcomers type meet.

I just saw that 16:26 5000m result - he must have been flying round the track - well done mate.

I don't know if I could get out of bed for any thing less than 5k.  I'll wait for a weekend with a 5000m race.

Dave, I am not 100% on being there as I forgot that BRRC was on and my brother is unsure of whether he will come. I much prefer 3km over 5 miles?? but I need the training.  Would love to do 3km and back up for BRRC, but my fragile body couldn't handle that :D . Maybe, hmmmm.

Mate I have never run a 400m event and would not have a clue as to how hard to run.

Andy, yeah 3km is a stretch for even me, considering I am a whole 2.5km from the track.

Greg, I would be happy to achieve my sub 12min goal, and hopeless at predicting times past 1km, so since Glenda has put a fast time down i might do a bit of trial and error and see how long i can hang on at 10.45 pace before i hit the wall.
What are you and your brother aiming for? Sub or low 11's ??

Glenda shouldn't you be around 10.12 pace or are you taking it easy these days?  :D

I am slowly getting back to speed...this time last year I ran 10.11 (national record w45+). At this moment I can't believe I ever ran that fast. Considering I run 800m in about 2.35 you should be kicking my butt.

Dave I shall be aiming for sub 12 maybe 11.45ish. I will not be trying to keep up with Glenda at 10.45 pace considering for me that would be suicide. Lil bro should be somewhere around the same as Glenda. I will just sit back and watch u kiddies run.

Went to Sherwood for a snappy 4km this am instead ,closer to home and had some other family stuff to do. Scraped in a 13.58 with the help of a young whippersnapper to race against. My PB for that one is 13.43? so I am getting fitter...at long last. For interest sake I went thru the 3km in 10.40, so my 10.45 prediction was pretty accurate.

PS hope you all achieved your goals!

Sorry Glenda I am claiming my first and only ever victory over you :D . Me 11.39, you DNS. Haha only joking. We had a great time. Dave got 11.12 (PB) by his watch and the little bro thinks he got 10.40ish but ran an extra 100m because the guys at the finish lost count of the laps. I don't know how many times I have told him to wear a watch! Fingers crossed they got his proper time.

It was good to see Dave hold his race together well and not blow his stack early chasing a low 3 min first 1km or phantom Glenda's. Dave, next stop 5km PB.

Well done on the good time at sherwood, it must feel great to be running that fast.

Cheers

Greg

Well done...kinda hard to lose count of 7.5 laps though! I hope your younger brother doesn't front up for a 10km on the track (can lose count in a 25 lapper)
