Queensland Masters - Have A Go!

They're a very welcoming bunch of athletes. All ages, all standards. I was being lapped, and I was lapping others. All in together and, although there are some very fine athletes there, all standards are represented. It's certainly not at all 'elitist' as one might imagine (as I once imagined).
So rock up and avvago! You don't need to join the club, you can run (or jump, or throw) as a visitor. And the luxury! Hot showers. Ahhhh.

For the Come and Try day you don't have to be a member. To my undestanding anyone can run the non-championship meetings. You have to be 30 to join Queensland Masters Athletics (QMA).
Hope that foot of yours is healing well.
Cheers,
Ronnie.

However! It doesn't need to be 'come and try day' for you to come and try. There's a 5,000m on 7 Nov, 3,000m on 14 Nov and 10,000m on 21 Nov. It would be good to see some of you reprobates have a go.

There's a 3,000m which would be a good hit-out for you longer distance runners to get a feel for a shorter, sharper, faster run.

Hey BT. Two CRs at old codgers (Masters). That can't be good for my mental health. Arrrh well, back to the basket weaving. (I be kidding).
Merry Christmas to all and especially those lurkers who are stlll thinking about coming out for a run. Hope to see you all on Jan. 16.

Yes - I did enjoy it - and Jan 16th has been written in my diary!!!
As has the need for some more speed sessions between now and then ........... had to be a PB for me today - never run a 3000m before - or run on a track for that matter ..... BUT - I vow to do better next time!!!!!!
Swaggerer - I have been a classic lurker - but can endorse what fun it is to attend an old codgers meeting - hopefully more CR lurkers will crawl out of their shells on Jan 16th!!!!
I might even try a 1500m as well next time - lol
Cheers and thanks guys

I joined Masters about six years ago and it has been a great move for me. As you say, there is always someone faster and slower than you. We have lots of members who are not especially fit, some who only stroll around but enjoy it nevertheless.
It is a chance to do other events. As a funrunner/solo jogger I never got the chance to run on a track and in particular, do sprints. The field events can be a lot of fun, and offer an equal opportunity for those carrying a bit of weight.
The hidden benefit is the people you meet. There are a lot of great people at Masters, and I have made a lot of friends and always have someone to train with.
If you are over 30 in Victoria, take a look at the V.M.A. website
http://vicmastersaths.org.au/
there are plenty of venues.

Alas, I couldn't make it, even though as late as Friday night I thought I would.
I emailed the webmaster a few days after the event you attended, have no reply. I assume it's a one man band, and that he's on holidays still.
There's always next week!

I think even at my pace I should be able to fit a nap in between events.
I was looking at the program again today and might have a crack at the steeplechase too, I wouldn't be any chop at the field events.
Even less so than the track stuff.
Looking at the results from last year, I'll be aiming to beat the 65year olds.
(It'll remind me of running at Sherwood I suppose)

I will be there tomorrow morn for the 5000m. Would run the 800m but can't wait two hours. Definatley no one speed for me. Being 6 ft 1 and 85kgs much better suited the shorter events

Got rolled by Bellthorpe.
I certainly have to work on pacing for next time I do it.
Got through 3000 in 13:41 struggled through the next 5 laps and finished up with 23:30 (self timed).
Having a look at my profile, that would be a new 5k PB
Thanks Bellthorpe for bringing this to my attention and showing me

Well done Tyno, tough conditions to do a PB in! Quite a good time considering how far from xmas we are. Just think of what you could get that down to by the time the nice cold weahter kicks in. Is a sub 20 too far of a reach?

I've learned a lot about pacing, as you mention, since I started this track caper.
And Glenda, great to see you running again. For someone who just a couple of months ago thought she might never run again, you looked pretty darned fast!
I've never run 5k before, so I'd set a conservative target of 24m. I did 23:23, and was happy with that. My lap times did not vary any more than a second on each lap.
3,000m next week people ...

Adrian was flying!
It'a a pity there were so few people running today. Perhaps the humidity kept them away? Still, I always enjoy it.

I was undecided all morning whether to use blocks, but seeing as no one else did I also went with the standing start.
I am happy with a – 55.95 400m, I would have liked more runners to push me the last 80m as I really hit the wall on the final straight, but the positive thing is that it allowed me to run my own race which was great.

F4ck me, 55.95, Dave that is fast. Mate good to hear you made it. The guys as QMA are great at what they do and to have a chat with. I will prob be there next week for the 3km if you are up for that Dave?

Not sure when I'll be back but it would be good to see some of the Brissy runners support QMA.

Yeah mate if i get up on time i will do the 3km as im confident of breaking 12 and can then cross that goal off the list.
If not i am thinking of doing - 60m, 100m, long jump, high jump, javelin and will put my hand up for the 400m relay if needed.
To any other Brisbane runners thinking of having a go, i highly reccomend it as there is all ages, shapes and abilities so definately not as daunting as a regular allcomers type meet.
I just saw that 16:26 5000m result - he must have been flying round the track - well done mate.

Dave, I am not 100% on being there as I forgot that BRRC was on and my brother is unsure of whether he will come. I much prefer 3km over 5 miles?? but I need the training. Would love to do 3km and back up for BRRC, but my fragile body couldn't handle that
Mate I have never run a 400m event and would not have a clue as to how hard to run.
Andy, yeah 3km is a stretch for even me, considering I am a whole 2.5km from the track.

Dave I shall be aiming for sub 12 maybe 11.45ish. I will not be trying to keep up with Glenda at 10.45 pace considering for me that would be suicide. Lil bro should be somewhere around the same as Glenda. I will just sit back and watch u kiddies run.

It was good to see Dave hold his race together well and not blow his stack early chasing a low 3 min first 1km or phantom Glenda's. Dave, next stop 5km PB.
Well done on the good time at sherwood, it must feel great to be running that fast.
