I have finally updated at the Lilli Pilli Half Fatass run, to be held on Sunday 4 November.
This is a cross between an adventure race and a fatass race, with both suburb and trail running.

More info here: http://www.coolrunni...illi_Pilli_Half

Hope to see a lot there for a different twist to the Fatass theme!

Cheers

Chappo

Chappo - there is a good chance I will be a resident of The Shire by 4th Nov and this will be very close to my home turf, so there is an exceedingly good chance I will be a starter.

(stand by for more RNP fatass in the next year or so)

I might even check out the bushies also.

Kev, this sounds like fun, which route were you thinking of doing? and I did hear a rumour once that bull sharks sometimes are in the Port Hacking River, is that true or just a wind up?

Bugger, I was hoping this thread was an impromptu fatass for this Lilly Pilly trail at Wilson's Prom in Vic :)

Not sure whether there are any sharks left in the Hacking. I normally swim across from RNP to Gray's Point and haven't been bitten yet! If it's a nice day I presume there will be a few boats about which are probably more of a concern.

I have had my foot cut open by a stingray on the sandbar in the middle of the Hacking, however wasn't wearing shoes at the time... :)

Um - wasn't it a stingray that killed the Croc Hunter?

Swimmming? Ugh - the running bit has my interest though - being fatass I suppose I can take floaties?

Kev when did you grow the extra finger? :)

The swim at the end is ~900m for the Main Route and ~400m for the Alternative Route 3.
The start time has been chosen so that it is low tide about 2 hours after the start. When the tide is low, a sandbar is revealed in the middle of the Hacking which should reduce Alternative Route 3 to two swims of ~100-150m and ~50-100m each. The Main Route will have longer legs.

Have to admit I have no idea on the current, but I guess I'll find out on the day... Twopennies idea of floaties may be a prudent decision!

Well I guess if I've drunk all the water out of my Camelbak by that stage I can always blow it up and use that :)

I do a lot of fishing in Port Hacking and have never personally seen a shark. However, they did catch a Bull shark near Lilli Pilli about 2 years ago. There have been people (clubbies) who train for ultra swims who have swum from Cronulla round to Swallow rock (Grays Point) and back without any issues.

The main concern is the small stingrays. If you leave your shoes on you should be o.k...they reeeallly hurt if you get spiked...happened to me whilst fishing down at Mansion Pt and have so say the most painful thing I have ever experienced.

The part we are swimming across gets to 20m deep in spots so you wont see the bottom.

This should be really interesting. I'm up for the full monty.

Actually looked at Kev's google map and the part chosen to swim across is the shallowest section and the water there is normally nice and blue so you should be able to see any nasties. The tide does run a little but as it will be the bottom of the tide we should be o.k...If the tide flows in that would be of more concern as we could be swept into the deep stuff but if swept out there are plenty of spots to get onto the rocks etc...just watch the oysters..use your feet instead of hands to get a grip...keep swimming until your hands almost touch the bottom.

I am a definite maybe (I am a well-renowned last-minute-piker) however as it is now on my home patch the excuses are harder to come by.

Count me in as well. Once I discovered the race goes straight past my house I had to do it.

Looking forward to it.

Yes - 9am. The rationale is that the low tide is around 11am.

See you tomorrow

Thanks Chappo for organising a great run. I wasn't able to hang around to cheer the others in but I am sure everyone did well.  For the record I finished in 1:59:26. Thanks again. Vince

The clouds cleared for a great run. Pity my PF didn't like the run and played up after the first 8km. Highlight for me was jumping in the hacking after the heat of the run and havinga nice paddle to the finish line.

Can everyonw who ran either post or PM me your times.

Chappo - I don't wear a watch but I rang the missus at 12:14 and that was about 10mins after I finished. I have no idea what time we started but if it was the advertised 9am then that would make a 3:04 finish.

I loved it all - to me the run was all I love about running. I started off slow then decided to chase the group at each turning in the nice gentile suburbs of lilli pilli, gymea bay and grays point. I didn't want to get lost. I lost the pack just at the place where the option of the first swim was. It was too inviting : road runs into the water and exists dead ahead about 150m away. Looking behind, amigo was hot on my heels so we both went right in hoping to cut the corner and catch up with the pack. The water was refreshing but we never saw anyone again. I held my water bottle in my hand, and my cap. Running with wet shoes was never an issue.

Amgio stopped at grays point and I half remembered the track to the RNP visitor centre from a previous jaunt some years back, then the honeymoon track to audley weir. the day was getting hot and I was slow as and feeling totally wrecked - but this is how my running has been for 20 years (on my own and feeling wrecked - I LOVE it). I filled up my water bottle (only took the one). The track to winifred falls Chappo had said was hard to follow but it was pretty ok, but I just walked uphill. When it opened out a bit I ran. Coming onto the road was ok, good to trot downhill but it was hot. It must have affected my navigation as I found myself too far left at the christian conference centre not the headland before, but looking at the water it looked like the shorter route anway. I swam (thru a shoal of jellyfish, non-stinging) to the sandbar which went from thigh deep to ankle deep then the last 20m across to lili pilli. the water was SUPERB. I swam with my cap on and it was fine.

A very underrated run that I hope re-appears. Great fun even though most of it I was by myself.

I had to shoot thru as I neglected to bring a drink and was gasping for one.

Many thanks for a great morning out.

Chappo

Just letting you know that Hayden and I finished together and we took alternate route 3 for the shorter swim option.

Just thought I'd use my first CoolRunning post to thank everybody for a great run! Have now been running for a while, and a bit more seriously for the last months. Done several trail runs but always on my own and was therefore quite keen on once joining a Fatass run.
Took the bus at 7 from Randwick, arrived at 8:30 at Caringbah station, and after an easy jog of a few kms made it to the start in time.
After half an hour or so I found myself in group of four, making our way through the RNP. My original plan was to do the 21 km, but when we got to Audley and the routes separated (after 1h 10m I think), decided to that it would be more 'fun' to follow the others than to make my way back to the river on my own.
I was able to hang on until where the Winifred trail hits the road. From there it went downhill    (maybe it were the few kilometres from the station to the start that were too much?) Was completely out of energy and barely made it down. Jumped into the water after 3h 13m and slowly made my way to the sandbank. The water provided a more than welcome refreshment on what turned out to be a pretty hot day, although I was a bit scared of cramping. Swimming went slow with shoes and camelbag, and the rising tide in combination with my sore legs made crossing the sandbank pretty exhausting. Don't know exactly when I stepped ashore, but probably 20 to 30 minutes after getting into the water...
What a great day it was, although I wasn't worth much the rest of the afternoon, which was spent on the beach with an ice cream...
Hope to be there again for Otford-Bundeena in December. Hopefully I will then be able to keep going till the very end!
Erik
