Just signed up for the 2012 Berlin Marathon!

Going to do the in-line skating marathon on Saturday 29th September and the 'normal' marathon the next day.

Anyone else thinking of going to Berlin next year?   The official website says there is a limit of 40,000 running and 10,000 skating entries and they already have over 26,000 entrants (might be combined).

Marathon goals for 2012:
Canberra in April,
Gold Coast in July,
Berlin in September.  Sorted.  :)

Same same BlueZed.  Just signed up for Berlin and really excited.  Thought it was a bit expensive - but the atmosphere should be fantastic.

Also just signed in for the Canberra in April!  And maybe doing the Gold Coast again.

Hi DatMan!

A bit freaky huh?  We both live in Canberra, one year age difference, both doing Canberra Gold Coast and Berlin next year, and our PBs are very close and we both have the sub 4 hour goal.

Mum said nothing about a brother ... :)   Enjoy your training.

Countdown: Day 35 - numbers, times and a lot of technique - the timing system

2012-08-26

Posted Image

The yellow boxes at the BMW BERLIN-MARATHON
© Mika timing

What would a marathon be without a finishing time? Certainly, not a good one. Therefore, we work with Mika timing, our timing partner. They are not only responsible for a finishing time of each participant, but also for each split time, every five kilometers throughout the 42 km course.

With the race number distribution every participant receives a yellow timing chip. The ChampionChip is a miniature transponder, inside a case. The transponder is a waterproof glass capsule containing a microchip and a coil for the supply of energy.

Once crossing the red tartan mats every five kilometers, this coil is charged by a magnetic field and enables the chip. Since the ChampionChip does not require batteries, it is with its four grams a real lightweight and guaranteed maintenance-free. During this charging, each chip transmits simultaneously its individual identification code to the timing system that transfers the data in real time to a computer.

208 of the tartan mats are placed around the 42 km long course. In addition, 65 so-called DigiBoxes are installed along the course. These yellow boxes receive, together with the mats, the individual chip-code of each chip. Furthermore 25 yellow cases, the so-called "ears" that store and transfer the results are used during the race as well as 23 people, who are administering the whole process. The whole equipment is distributed with ten vans to the locations in the night before the start of the BMW BERLIN MARATHON.

At the same time, the technique allows to follow the split times of the runners.

Now that's just sad. Please, please, people, post on this thread before BlueZed actually begins to think he is two people. (A runner and an inline skater, perhaps...had you thought of dividing yourself that way? The runner could post and the skater could reply.....)

;)

Hey Zed!  Had a good 21km skate this morning.  Still having trouble skating with my hands behind my back like the professionals.  Still got a few weeks to practice though.  At least I am falling over less now.

Good luck with the long run this Sunday!  Love you Buddy.  :)   30 Sleeps!

Hey Blue!   Did a 32km run this morning in 3hrs 31mins.  Kind of on track for a 4hr 30min marathon but I have never run one after skating hard for a couple of hours.  Don't forget that the skating finishes at 6:30pm so I won't even have a full day to recover.   As soon as you are off the skates we will have to rush back to the hotel, shower and get out to that Italian restaurant you found nearby.

I can disassociate while running which makes it a bit easier; you can't relax while you are skating because frankly, you aren't a good skater.  You need to concentrate the whole way.  :)

28 sleeps!    Zed

I'm back!  Sorry been away for so long.  Mighty excited about heading over to Europe in just 10 sleeps, and then running the Berlin Marathon.  Seems amazingly well organised.Daily email updates about the event.  Can't wait to see/hear the entertainment - 80 bands/drummers etc over the race distance. And a million cheering fans!  I scored bib number 13720 - cannot imagine that there will be 40,000 runners! :)

Hey Zed!  Think I may have seen you this week in the morning - thats if you do skate around near Lake Tuggeranong?

Yeah DatMan!  I was wondering what had happened to you.  Great to hear you are coming.  I think we are leaving on the same day ... perhaps the same flight?  :)

The last time I skated around the Lake was last Saturday morning and I was wearing the Australian flag bike jersey I will be wearing on the 29th.

The weather forecast for Berlin on 29th and 30th is RAIN and A COUPLE OF SHOWERS respectively.  Still a while to go though.

Sounds like the weather will be almost identical to Canberra -but without the minus degrees in the early morning.
Hopefully should mean that we are "conditioned" for the temperature.  Really fell apart last year up at the Gold Coast in my only other marathon. Was just way too humid and hot for me after training in the cool down here.

Yes it would be nice and cool for the run but I really don't fancy skating in the rain; too slippery.   Nothing we can do about it though ... 14 days and 20 hours to go.

Last day at work! Then off to the land of pickled pigs trotters and wurst upon wurst!

This tapering period is hard.  Want to run more because I feel fresh, but I guess that's the idea - take it easy and save it for 30-Sept.

Weather looks good for the race. Min 8 Max 15 with clouds and sun. And only 5k winds.

Should be some quick times if you can get space in the crowds.

Good luck everyone running.

Also the race is on Fox live on Eurosport 511 at 4:45PM this Sunday 30 September AEST.

Plus Uncle Dave and Bandanna. Uncle looks on song for a sub 2:20 run.

Might get a few camera shots of Dave with the lead females. Just look for the short white guy in a Striders singlet.

The expo was excellent.  Walked into a hanger at Tempelhof and thought "this is about as big as Gold Coast"; then I saw it extended into the next hanger.  :Tounge:

The EXPO was just huge.  Stoked to get my race bib and chip.  So many stalls to look at - and even here so many more sausages.

Watched the inline skating today - speedsters or what!??! BlueZed: Hope you finished before the rain squalls hit.

Hope its not as windy tomorrow - but whatever comes it will be a blast!

Yeah!   I am a 2:27 marathoner!

The Berlin inline skating marathon is definitely one of the best things I have ever done.

What an adventure!   At about 9k my group had to stop to let an ambulance cross.  The woman behind me could not stop in time and we both went down.  About 8k further on we all had to move over to let two police motorcycles and another ambulance overtake us; a serious skater crash I think.  At 28k it began to rain which slowed us down a bit.  Probably added about 5mins to my time but also meant I was fresh for a strong finish through the Brandenburg Gate.

Stage One complete!   Sehr Gut.

Addendum: Guten Abend Datman!   No but the rain was not too bad and the road was not so slippery; just had to take smaller pushes.

Good luck tomorrow!

This Marathon is my No 1 Bucket List Run.

I hereby make a solemn vow that I shall follow in the "ZED MANS" footsteps & conquer the Berlin Marathon before I tackle the "Pearly Gates Marathon" in the after life.

Good luck!

Looks like the german tv sponsor will be live streaming it, albeit in german, but whatever. I think it clashes with the NRL grand final, so it will be laptop streaming, Roy and HG on the radio and NRL on the TV. Good times.

edit: might be on here too http://www.watchathletics.com/

Great job, BlueZed.  Ever since seeing the Athens to Atlanta skate event on Endurance Traveler, I thought that would be an excellent cross training activity.  I hope you aren't to bashed up for the big run.  Good luck!

Sounds like a blast! Thanks for the report & good luck with the marathon!
