When running matters no more

Posted by Unlikelyrunner , 06 March 2012 · 296 views

I havent written a blog update for a couple of months, mainly because I have recently changed jobs and I have been very busy, but also because it has been the commencement of a long haul preparation for Comrades 2012.

K2D was tough as already reported, as was Hares and Hounds.  Both of those races were hard because I didnt use the mental aspect of running to my advantage - basically, I got my strategy all wrong and I paid the price.  Then a while back I did the Mt Glorious Mountain run and I would have to say it was the best run (tactically and performance) of my life.  Hoping for a sub 3hr time for the very very tough 22kms, I ran a 2:39 and stormed home over the last 7km.  Since then it has been about slogging it out on road and trails, watching my diet, and get everything right in time for the 6-Foot Track Marathon this weekend.

Then, on Saturday morning my life changed forever.  A couple I know, both who are very good friends of mine, asked for some help and several people including myself obliged without even a 2nd thought. I dont want to go into too much detail, because all of this is still very raw and private to myself and to my friends.  They are OK, but someone else we both know (an someone who is best friends with this couple) took their own life.

To make matters worse, we didnt know this until we found this persons body in bushland on the Saturday, over 2 days after they disappeared.

Whilst I cannot and will not ever get what I witnessed out of my head, a young life has been cut short, I have lost a running colleague, I have two very good friends that are totally broken and I dont know how I can help them recover from this.

And this weekend is the 6-Foot Track marathon, weather permitting.

No PB's this weekend I am afraid for I will be running with my friends. Not in the physical sense, but I know they will be with me along the way.
