Had the day off today and headed over to The Bay to do 32km.  Didn't have a good one.  I felt very listless by the time I got to 14km and after that it was just an ungainly slog.  I gave up at just under 30km - by that stage I was feeling so horrible that persevering seemed silly.

I think (hope) that it's the tail end of the flu that caused all the unhappiness today. I had a mild dose a couple of weeks ago but shook it off very quickly. I ran the Sutherland half a week ago, and enjoyed it, but the flu returned shortly after for a few days.  Very mild and no fever but it seems to have left me with very little energy.

For better or worse today was the last long run, so my glacial stop-start 30km will have to do.  But I must admit I felt very disappointed and I find it hard to believe that I'll magically be able to run 42km in three weeks time 8)

Sorry - just needed to moan a bit :)

Hey Slowmo,
sorry to hear you are not feeling well and that your long run was so tough. I hope you are right and it is just the tail end of the flu. Sending you positive vibes for a speedy recovery, and hope to see you all bright-eyed as usual at Sri Chinmoy this Sunday. I'm sure you'll be right for the marathon...

Anne.

Slowmo,

Just trust the training you have done, 3 weeks is long enough with taper to get over the lasting effects of the flu and have a great race.
See you at the start and hopefully not agin till the finish, you should be a long way ahead of me.

I'd earmarked today to enter the full marathon after finishing Trailwalker yesterday. Today is supposedly the last day of earlybird entries. I'm pretty pissed off as they have already upped the price online.  As I am entering 5 people I'm thinking about either not doing it or waiting till the very last minute to enter. The Half marathon is now $95 (supposed to be $80 until Sept 1st) and the full is $150 (was supposed to be $135 until tomorrow)

Hey guys and gals

I just got an email from the organisers of the Blackmores Running festival stating this

"Hi Cameron, apologies, we had a computer error, you will receive a refund within two week, regards Elaine"

so it looks like ill get my early bird discount.

I am in for the half. My first half.

Despite my lack of preparation, I am more worried about the early start than the following run.

Hopefully, I can manage to meet some Coolrunners while I am there.

Oh no! My last 32k on Saturday just gone and I was sick with flu by Sunday morning... Felt like death on Monday, eeked out 5.5k with a few walking breaks on Tuesday and was ordered onto a 10-day course of penicillin on Wed. I didn't know penicillin was even used any more? Help. I can't run... or even walk right now. What do you think everyone? Will I recover in time for the full? I've trained so well this time round with plenty of long runs. A 28k, a 30, a 34 and last week's 32 and now... sick. Eek!!  :)

Don't worry. If you have done the training, and you seem to have done plenty of long runs, you will be fine come September 21. Rest up, you should be in taper mode. Remember too, that the marathon is almost all mental resolve.

Like Seris, I entered to do the marathon last week Saturday, a couple of hours after Trailwalker.

Mosmanmum, the virulent Mosman strain of the virus laid me out from Bankstown Half to Caboolture 24 Hour, ie 2 weeks off racing with antibiotic therapy. You should be right in three weeks with plenty of rest.

Am I over- or undertrained or ready? Might sound like a strange question, but here's why...

I followed a 18-week marathon training program (Hal Higdon's intermediate program). Week 18 was in early August. Total distance covered was 950km which included three 32km long runs. I ran/hiked the Inca Trail (45km) in Peru on 7-8 August, then spend a week hiking trails in the mountains around Salt Lake City, Utah (ranging from 1 - 4 hours each day). Then I hiked the Kokoda trail (96km) in 6 days from 26 - 31 Aug. (average 6 hours per day). I'd love to do a marathon this year as it feels like I trained for one, but have not actually done anything (except a lot of trail hiking!).

My marathon PB is 3h59 at the Gold Coast Marathon in 2007. Can you give me your opinion - am I over- or undertrained or ready?

With all that hiking training I am 100% sure you can finish a Marathon.
The question is what is your goal for the Marathon?

If it is to run Sydney in 2 weeks and get a PB that might not be possible or maybe it could but I am sure it would hurt even trying. Not enough running training.
If it is to run/walk Sydney in 2 weeks and have lots of fun with like minded people go for it I do not think you have a  problem just finishing without worrying about the time.

Either way have fun.

Hey Aziz, there will be plenty of us there, and some of us will be hard to miss because we have a pact to be the loudest if not the fastest team :). The coolrunning fluoro colours help, but some of us will be adding some extra lashings involving pink skirts and circus tights.

If you or anyone else is fundraising as part of the running festival, please join our coolrunning fundraiser team! At the moment we are the #1 team and we want to keep it that way (those sneaky corporate teams tend to put on a late sprint in the fundraising stakes). More details on the relevant thread in this forum.

Look forward to meeting you on the day!

Hi Brick: RE: Am I over- or undertrained or ready?

"What is your goal for the Marathon?" I would like to come in under 4 hours. But I've not been to Sydney before, don't know the course and will be stressed just to find the start of the race!

"Have fun." Not sure about that. The 2007 Gold Coast marathon was the hardest thing I've ever done. Worked really hard to get in under 4 hours. But this year I feel stronger and more prepared for a marathon distance. Last year the Gold Coast was part of my training to do the 96km Kokoda Race in PNG.

I've decided to go for a longish run on the weekend (maybe 24k) to see how I feel and then make my decision...

Thanks for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

Okay, so now a full week has passed and I've not run a step. Today I plan to take a gentle run and see how I pull up. I'm still sucking down penicillin and feeling like I want to die. My question... if I pick back up today with only one week missed (a week of 57k with one 20k on pace run) am I well, screwed... or might I remain relatively unaffected on the day?? Help!

Remember don't panic, it is taper time so one week of no running is not going to hurt at all as long as you get over the flu properly.
Your priority should be to get better and not to try to do to much in the next 2 weeks.

If you try to force the recovery then you could have trouble.

Just relax, & good luck.
See you out running on 21st September.
