I had arthroscopic knee surgery this morning on a lateral meniscus (bucket handle) tear. I had thought it would most likely be a repair but turns out that partial removal was required.
I don't see the surgeon for another week, so don't know what % they removed.
Surgeon's pre-op thoughts were that returning to running wouldn't be a problem. I am worried that this was if it was a repair and not a partial removal.
Any of you guys had a successful return to running after partial meniscectomy?

Didn't use the term 'partial meniscectomy' but I had a tear behind the right knee that was cleaned up 2.5 yrs ago. Its the reason I am running more than ever now.

You will run again. I have had 4 menisectomies, 3 left, 1 right. I was told I had 10 years in me to run and I would need knee replacements. Not fast, but love running long. That was 15 years ago. Take your recovery easy.
Happy running.

Good to hear you all got back to regular running after this. There seem to be plenty of stories on the internet where the surgeon has said not to run again after this procedure, this sounded pretty extreme to me.
Anyway, knee feels good today. A little stiff but no pain walking around and the stretches are helping. I have a good physio who should put me on a good recovery program to ease into running again. Hopefully the surgeon gives me some good news next week.

A partial menisectomy is what is typically performed for meniscal tears and, depending on the location of your tear, it shouldn't get in the way of your running (assuming it was an acute injury and not degenerative). The repairs are less frequent and associated with a slower rehab due to surgical restrictions.
A good physio WHO KNOWS RUNNERS is invaluable post-op. The rehab needs to be running specific and encompass range-specific strength work, running-specific stability work and cardio exs specific to your chosen type of running. Did I mention the rehab should be specific? The general strengthening programs won't suffice.
