I'm in  :D

Not sure how far I'll get but what the hey.

Cheers, 2P

After being in for 35km (Mt Colah) I am out for two reasons:

One, logistics of getting to start, then getting back to car from where I finish.

Two, I would prefer to run my 35km (whether here or elsewhere) at a pace faster than what I think the guys doing whole distance will do --2:45 vs 3:00. I think if you are only running part way you shouldn't be(respectfully) in front of everyone else-- support running only.

So good luck all, I will be out doing my run either tomorrow or Sunday

Cheers

After the now-customary late "sprint-to-the-start" by Twopennys  B) the boys (and yes, they were all boys) set off just after 7 on a rather chilly but beautiful clear Sydney morning.

I'm off for a ride now but will drive up a bit later & probably catch up with them about midday. Beautiful day for it  :D

I ran to Bobbin Head this morning (mostly with Tim). I think it is 31k mark (nearly a third of the way). We got there in about 2:37 (which is pretty quick if you are running the whole way).

Placings at bobbin head -(as far as I am aware anyway) with apx time:

1) John Mergler - way in front
2&3) Spud & friend 2:35
4) Tim (and me) 2:37
5&6) these guys 3:00
7-11) these guys 3:12 (inc Horrie and Virtual)
12) Twopennys 3:27

Redback and MikeF also ran with us until apx 25k.

Long way to go!

There were 20 starters, of which 15 were planning on the whole hog to Gosford. The other 5 were out for some training run variant. They started at 7:03 in beautiful, if cold, sunny weather. John Mergler took off at a fast rate, and I saw him at Berowra 50km later in 3h 20m, refusing all food/drink aid. (scary).

My photos are here

Pleased to have the updates and photo's. But 4 minute pace for the first 50k - the mind boggles. I hope he made it under 8 hours. [img]

The winner' s time??

btw Plu reported that Mergler came out of Bobbin Head 35-37km after 9:40, that makes 4:20 pace to there--seems more realistic. 8 hrs is 5min pace.

First up, well done to John, SPud and Tim on a great effort for the podium places.  Huge thanks to all those support people out there.  Plu had an aid station that a marathon couldn't repeat, Horrie's boot looked like half a supermarket and the guys out there with us including sfGnome who joined us on the way out of Bobbin Head and Uncle Dave cruising past on his bike gave us all a bit of a gee up.

On to the race.   I left with all intentions of doing the whole lot - but had a feeling that I was a little underdone. I think I should have done more than one 32k run since Six Foot and didn't help that I spent two weeks laid after SMH with some cold. Any way, running with John Ellis, Terry, Virtual Horrie and Lewis fora the first long stretch was good.  Plenty of jokes despite the idiocy of what we were attempting.  This is the longest run I have ever attempted and to do it with no prep - well sheer stupidity but that's me. :D

Therr was quite some conjecture about our pace between the km markings as per the directions and those wearing the 305's. By time and directions, we were on 6 min pace for the first 30 and went through ther marathon in 4:30.  Really happy with that even though we knew it was a bit quick.  We then slowed down a bit and just cruised along.  By Brooklyn bridge, I was feeling good physically and felt like I had plenty left but had a sharp pain behind the right knee.  Hmmm, with GCM in two weeks that work is paying for, I thought it would be wiser to call it quits at The Road Warrior cafe.  Fortunately, AK was coming along at that time so all good.  John Ellis also decided that doing this on two days prep was, well, you know so he stopped at the same time.

We ended up driving up to Gosford and got there just in time to see Spud crossing the line so all good.  We even had Uncle Dave along for the ride to see it.  We then all piled into the Subaru and headed on home.

I would like to thank all those support people out there, the people who came along to see us off, Eagle for lending me a headlamp, torch and reflective vest - if I kept going I would have needed them and AK for spurring me on by telling me I was silly to try it and I was going to injure myself.

Anyway, sitting here now, a bit tired and ready to go to the Striders Star tomorrow - no, I'll be selling uniforms not running. Well, maybe a small stretch just to move the legs - active recovery and all that  B)

See you all at the Gold Coast and I'll be back next year to finish this one and now I know what I need to do if Glasshouse comes to fruition.  I wonder if I can get work to pay for that one and give me time off to train properly? :D

My full cheering report to follow shortly - I've only just got home - but if my memory serves me correctly...

Twopennys - finished with 62.5km at Brooklyn

Virtual - 11:05

Horrie - 11:48 (I think)

Back in the QC waiting for my flight.

Happy with my performance today.  11:05 and equal fourth I think, I finished with a fellow called Justin who was kind enough to take on the navigation responsibilities for the last 8km or so.

Well done to all of the runners that participated, it takes guts to front up to an unsupported race. Special mention to Tim on a simply mind blowing performance. Must be that 140km per week that you aren't doing.  Thanks Plu, Jen, Belinda for fantastic support you ensured that I kept fed and watered all day.

Plu rode along side me through the top section when things got hard. After some Plu supplied coke the final 30km felt good and I managed to come home quite strong.

I'm really glad that I went in this run. After doing Comrades last year I see this race as a great follow up event.

Oh, Thanks Kevin for doing your usual outstanding job.

I won't list all the people that I ran with today because ther were heaps.  But one event was worthy of note,,

At the pie in the sky pie shop I asked for a vegie pie, "nah, we're out ot them" lots of people eating vegie pies today.  What about a pastie? "nah", Potato pie? "out of then too, can you hurry up and choose something" Gimme one of them blueberry pies.. and I'm sure I heard her say under her breath, "bloody joggers"

If I were to give awards I'd give the tenacious award to Ken Smith.  Very gutsy performance Ken.

Cheers, Brendan

Anyhow, that's it for me.  Off for a shower and a cool drink.  B)

Thanks to Plu and Kev for their support out there today. Plu had to have one of the best aid stations I've seen!  B)
Very happy with my run and a 4 minute PB. :D  John Mergler simply blew the field away and was out of sight before we even reached the Harbour Bridge, keen to find out his finish time.
Tim did Team Mellum proud running a blinder and lots of other good runs too.
I've ran the "up" and the "down" hard now and I have to say the "up" is definitely tougher. As Plu said there was quite a few "low points" being had as we pulled into Calga interchange.

Great day, long live Fatass!

Oh and thanks to Aunty Karin and Truckie for the lift home!
And Brendan, the veggie pie (complete with spuds in there) was perfect. ;-)

What an absolutely awesome day.

The Cool Running community was in its finest form today. Thank you so much to everybody who gave up big chunks of their day to come out and offer support out there today. Simply fantastic!

Kevin for organising these events and having aid out on the course, Plu for winning the prize for the Aid Station of the day. Jen for the support you offered me personally over the last 25km when things were not going that great and for providing great company to Tim and Belinda. Uncle Dave and Aunty Karin for providing some great moral support during some of those tough times as well.

Now to the run, congratulations to everybody for having the courage to start an event like this. For those who were unfortunate not to make it to Gosford, you are still true Ultra Runners. To those who did manage to finish, congratulations on a great achievement.

As for my run, I managed to achieve my goal of a sub 12 hour finish in 11:48 and could not have done it without my beautiful wife Belinda and my very patient son Tim.

I am already looking forward to the down run next year.

Hi all,

By the length of this post you  can tell I did not run 96km.  I am sure this story could be replicated by all the people out there today supporting their partners, friends and fathers.

35km in 8:40 hours with 2:45 riding time.

Well that is my slowest 35 km and one of the most enjoyable.

The Preparation

Well I got up at 8:00am and aimed to get to Bobbin Head the northern park entrance in time to see the first runner come through. I packed the car after I shopped last night. This morning I went to put the bike on the roof and the quick release was gone - it must have worked loose and came off. This was a problem as later I had to fit Nick in the car and I was running out of time. I put all the gear in the front seat and then the bike in the back. This got me to Bobbin Head. I thought, as I was driving, that with some creative packing I might be able to squeeze all the stuff in the back and get Nick home. I put this in the back of my memory to sort out at around 12:00pm when I was finished with Bobbin Head. As I was driving to Bobbin Head I realised that I had left my hands free in my car (Jenny's has the roof rack). So I rang ahead for Jenny to bring it to Rugby or leave it on the bookshelf inside the front door.

I was dressed for all conditions.  I thought that if I was going to be out all day in stages and riding slowly next to runners I had to have warm gear.  So I had on a long sleeve thermal top and on top of this I had a  long sleeve cycle top, my longsleeve cool running top and in the car I hadboth a vest and longsleeve wind proof tops.  I had a backpack for an emergency with some food bars, redfrogs, a couple of cans of coke and the water bags.  This was for runners who might have needed immediate goodies before the aid station.  I did not expect to use them here but at 70km later in the arvo I might.  In the back left hand pocket I had my camera  and in the right was the camera.

Bobbin Head 9:00am-12:00pm

I arrrived and set up an aid station. Soon after I set up, three girls came running up the hill - they had been for a 20km bush run. When I said what we were doing and how it fitted into the Comrades one said thats I good idea and let slip she had done the Comrades.

I then headed towards the descent down to Bobbin Head with in a few kms I came across John Megler who was at about 35km by 10:40am which was 2:40 minutes. No aid wanted no water or food with him - true Fat Ass Whippetman. I had a 10 second conversation and rode ahead to get a photo and he was too fast for me.

It is a couple of km from where the freeway crosses the road to the descent into Bobbin Head. I got about 600m and came across Spud with another runner. I had a quick chat and took a photo. Stopping the bike with cars and boats on the back on a narrow road to take photos was not too wise. I had to develop another system to take photos. Soon they were on there way and I rolled down the hill.

30 odd km is a good stage to meet the runners because they are spread out a bit. I decided before hand, for safety reasons, to stay with the single runners. A groups of runners and a bike on the road with cars could have caused a few issues. Ken Smith who left at 6:00am was walking up the hill and then I spotted a fast moving Tim. Meanwhile, I had fielded a few phone calls while riding down the hill. (My bike skills a getting a bit better or I was lucky in doing this safely?) Anyway I knew there was a bit of a break till the next runners so I was able to ride next to Tim the few km along the undulations to the aid station.

We were able to chat easily as he ran on the right hand side of the road and I was on the left. This allowed the cars to pass and be side by side chatting. By this stage I had mastered taking photos while on the bike. I looped my hand through the cord (I had decided to take it out of the case) and was able to pull out the camera and take some side on shots. Later I was to be more adventurous and take photos from behind and in front - only occasionally dodging cars and boats here and later motor cycles at Mt White. The Garmin thingys the runners had and my bike computer were in sync. Tim was running along easily at 8-9km per hour. After a good roll with Tim we departed company. Our last conversation was about Vegan philosophy which I wanted to continue later in the arvo.

So I had a little sprint back to the top of the climb and got 400m down in time to see two guys I did not know and then a group of 4-5 including Truckie, Horrie and Virtual a bit behind. I looped back up past Brendan and had a brief chat to the group and doubled back to Brendan. He and I stayed together till the aid station. We chatted about him coming back to Sydney and I noted that he was wearing his Comrades shirt for the run. By the time we got to the aid station the group was still there and after a photo and a feed they headed off.

So I went back for my next ride and Louie was coming up a hill. So I had a quick introduction and a chat to him and headed off. He spoke to me about his Coburg run. I wanted to get to Two Pennys as soon as I could so I could spend more time with him on the way back. I had been told he had a break at the bottom and despite this he made good time and I met him a km or so towards me from the top of the climb. We chatted , assuming the left and right hand side of the road positions and I took a few photos. Before long we were at my car.

(I must look like a tourist guide. I spent some time helping some tourists who were doing a bush walk and later in the arvo I had to direct two cars to the closest service sation. And they are not close at Calga!)

I was in the process of packing up and this guy , Justin, was flying up the hill. He had run with a few guys that pulled out earlier. He was to move right through the pack with a big negative split I suspect.

Nick's rugby 12:00-1:30pm for those interested in juggling a Fat Ass Day and provided context

I finished packing and remembered I had to do something about the roof rack. I reasoned I had to fix it: not only for Nick but if I had to transport a runner. It was 11:50am and Nick's game at Hornsby was at 12:00pm. I like going to the games but also want to be there if there is an injury. (Later in the arvo I heard a Hunters Hill boy was in hospital with a neck injury). I raced to Hornsby and got a good park near Hornsby Cycles. Alex was really good and came to the car to have a look and had a quick release thingy that he just gave me. Top guy. I was on my way.

There was traffic everywhere and managed a park next to the railway line and bolted to the game just after Nick's team had scored. I chatted to the usual people and unfortunately Cool runner Colours were the colours of the opposition. Anyway it was a tough game and Nick's team held on for a 7 nill win. I found out in the way home that Nick had scored the winning try and I missed it. Jenny was actually at the game and saw the try scored and did not know it was Nick.

Jenny had left a bit earlier and for some reason was caught in traffic. She was stressed and was going to be late for tennis. I had to take Nick home and went via Penno Road and it was not much better. I gave up all hope of getting my hands free for the mobile, getting Nick home and getting back to the PMC. I finally got to Thornliegh and took the back road where the Trail Walker comes out. I joined Penno Road opposite the Toyota dealer saving about 10 minutes and Nick agreed to walk from here to tennis, get Ali and walk her home. This was not the plan but thanks Nick for being a good boy.

Calga 2:15 -5:00pm

After dropping Nick I weighed up what to do and I was trying to calculate where the runners would be. I realised at this stage I had left my bike computer on - hence the long ride! So I took the freeway straight to Mt White and planned to set up shop at Calga and ride back towards Mt White with the runners and do much the same as I did in the morning.

As I was driving to Calga, along the back road, I was pleased to see Spud - I was not too late. He was in second place. I did not expect to see John in first place. He wanted water so I stopped and gave him the bottle from my bike. I did not realise that he wanted to fill his bladder. So I said I would drive ahead and get organised. I found some more water and by then he had caught up to me. Spud mentioned he had a bit of a black spot a bit earlier. A few people did in this location

I left him and drove to Calga and set up my gear on the left hand side of the road with what I thought was a nice backdrop.

I introduced myself to the owners of one of the houses and got some water and explained why the card table was out the front of their place. I was finished just as Spud was coming in. I realised I was on the wrongside of the road for runners who had run 78km. After Spud went through I put all the gear on the other side of the road and then headed off towards Mt White. I was pleased with picking Calga as those who stopped at Mt White knew they could have a break in 5km at Calga and those who wanted to push through could knowing that there was the last aid stop up ahead. Well they did not know this at this stage.

With in a few kms heading back to Mt White was Tim. He was still going well though his legs were tight. Not having run 70 odd km myself I was not sure how to handle the runners. So I decided to offer anything they wanted, try and encourage them to eat and drink if I thought they were not and basically talk. Sometimes I would ask them did they want me to move on as I understood if they would want to be by themselves. With Tim we resumed our vegan conversation as motorbikes raced by. Pretty soon we were at Calga.

As with Bobbin Head I was banking on a break to the next group. I had received a meassage fro Jen_Runs who was Mt White with Belinda. So I went for a good ride and got to Mt White as most of the others runners were arriving. The timing could not have been better: the runners were coming in, there were four support cars including Aunty Karin and Uncle Dave. After a bit of riding and chatting I headed back up to congo line of runners running up a slight incline (well it was to me on the bike). I cruised up and down the line taking photos and chatting. I think this section was a black spot for a number of runners after the long climb to Mt White. I basically talked when I thought I could and let runners have there own space when they needed it. It was interesting how runners would pass each other and then re-pass eachother a bit later. Each runner was in their own world and yet there was a loosely defined group of runners within a few 100ms of each other at 70 odd kms. It was quite a sight to see.

We got to Calga and the last of the runnerss went through and Belinda, Timmy and Jen_Runs helped me pack the car really quickly as I was planning to drive to Kariong light industrial area and ride back towards the runners. As I was driving up the other side of Mooney Mooney Creek I looked at the time and it was 4:15pm. I realised by the time I got back it would be darker and it would not be to safe to have runners and me there on the road as well. Also I had decided that psychologically the runners would feel they were going to make it and might just want time to themselves to focus their way home and dig in.

So I turned around and waited at the bottom. It was the right thing to do as it seemed everyone had got a second wind and they were flying down the hill. Brendan seemed to pick up a lot. He knocked back a can of coke in 2 seconds like it was a turpedo (remember those?). I then headed up the hill and between Calga and Mt White I ran into Louie who was still out there.. I stopped and he had some lollies and a coke. Aunty stopped to say hi and I noticed that Spud was in the car. He had finished and was on the way home.

At home tonight

Well I have been typing for a few hours after putting up the photos I started writing this report. I am still in the gear I was in today and I am feeling sick from eating all the left over lollies and drinking coke. My wrist is sore from taking photos and the bike shorts and tights have kept my groin warm.

I have had a 35 km ride and a most enjoyable day. I have this one marked for next year.  Whether I make it or not is another issue.

cheers Plu

Congratulations to everyone on getting through Poor Man's today. Superb effort to start it.
Comisserations to those runners that had to pull out early or didn't start.
Maybe next year when you get to run back home.

And if these aid stations keep getting any bigger you'll have to give up fatass status. B)

Congratulations to all the runners and supporters including ever energetic Plu and the seemingly always present Jen_Runs and the faithful Belinda. Brave effort by all but for Tuckie and fantastic result on virtually no preparation. Sounded like a wise decision to stop when you did and save yourself for bigger and betterthings later in the year

John Mergler here

Thanks everyone for the support yesterday and we could not have had better conditions, what a fantastic day!

I finished at Gosford Station in a time of 7.29 (no thanks to that last downhill section!!!). The up direction is certainly tougher than down, with the hills in the back section after the 60km point being the principal difference, particularly from Money Mooney Servo to Mount White bikers cafe( a 10km slog ).

Thanks to my mate Phil who met me at Bobbin Head and  in between a 160km training ride kept me on track and finished with me at Gosford where my wife and kids met us and bought us home.

Looking forward to next year already

John

Well done John, very good time.

Congrats to all the others that finished the whole race. Tim good work on the massive PB even given your mid-week foot dramas. The always improving Spud, good stuff.

Hi KT,

My time at Road Warriors cafe was 8:17:42 including my wonderful meat pie at Pie in the Sky. Boy was I
hungry for real food then!

Feeling good now just a bit tight behind the right knee. Glad I stopped when I did.

Cheers!

P.S. Kev, can you put an 'e' after the a in my surname please

thanks everyone.  It was a perfect day for a run.  It was great seeing so many people at the start.

I ran a bit quick at the start but the company made it feel ok.  Then my legs got very sore and I wondered what I was doing at about 45km and thought I was in for a bad afternoon.  But I just tried to keep running and set up small goals to reach in my mind and tried not to let any crappy thoughts in.

After Mt White I started to think I was going to be strife since I was already down to 1/2 a bottle and there were still 18km to go and I was feeling really thirsty.  Then there on his bike dressed in his coolrunning attire was Plu.  I had a coke and he filled my bottle and I knew I was ok from there.

I have only just got home from the in-laws and will write a race report later.

I am pretty happy with how it all went.  next time I may try to stay with Spud longer and who knows maybe I can pass him when he is eating all the vego pies  B)

What an awesome day, a big thankyou to Kev, Belinda , Jen and Plu for the support and encouragment along the way.
Ran the first 55ish kms with John , Horrie, Virtual and Truckie who was setting the pace, went through the marathon in 4.30 which i found a very comfortable pace knowing the big hills were in the second half.
loaded up on water at pie in the sky and kept going.
That was the last i saw of truckie. Ran with john down the hill to the Hawkesbury River and started the climb up to Mt White and found myself running alone for the first time in the race. The climb up Mt White was going well until i ran out of water, had a bit of a bad patch at that point but plodded along till Mt White were i restocked supplies and a change of socks had me feeling really good.
I felt pretty strong through the next 20km and when i was told i had less than 20 km to go thats when i knew i would make it.
Justin and Virtual overtook me going up the hill from Mooney Mooney creek, i dont think getting overtaken with 15km to go after running 80km worried me to much.
The last decent into gosford was a killer on the thighs but managed to get  to the finish in 11.16. On my first attempt at anything over 60km im happy with that time.
Congratulations to all those who finished and well done to the guys that went as far as there bodies would take them.

You guys fail to amaze me - I managed to drag myself out of bed early yesterday morning as I wanted to show my support for you all at the start.

I don't think I have recovered from seeing the pace that Minty set out at - I even asked KT if he was taking the proverbial thinking that no one could keep that pace up for 96K - how wrong was I.

Congratulations to all - maybe one day I can take a leap of faith and join you on what must be an amazing journey.

Hi all,

I just noticed, through Bloglines, that Jan has put up his photos for the leg from  the Opera House to Killara.  Looks like a cooler start to the day.

From the corner of the last few photos you  could have ducked up to the Greengate for rehydration:-)

Cheers  Plu

Excellent effort all who took part. Sorry I couldn't be there this year, after enjoying it so much last year. Great work Spud on yet another PB, and Tim - you're really going to be hard to beat next year - I can't wait!

Hi all
Thanks for a great day
I decided to run on Friday morning, had a bit of trouble recovering from Kempsey Marathon  a lousy second half but managed to run a comfortable 19 km on Thursday afternoon
The first hour and a half seemed like what Kevin said a jog around the block going through Chatswood I went ahead then turned around to see where they where waited near Roseville for them to catch up and fell in behind with Jan Herman and Virtual in the bunch the pace was too fast and I needed to reassess my time or stop before Gosford
Thanks Plu, Jen, Belinda Kevin and uncle Dave for your support It made the day a lot easier
The disappointment of the day not breaking 12 hours finishing in 12h 20min
The best part of the day was covering the first 42 kms in about 4h 30min, faster than Kempsey and going through the 80km point, 30min faster than the Glasshouse 80km in May, talking to Plu at the 37km mark Uncle Dave near Berowa and Plu at the 78Km mark he stopped to see how I was I had a Can of coke and some snakes than some of the other runners stopped I was getting cold and my legs were starting to seize up so had to get moving just seeing them made the last 16km a lot easier
I had to take my tshirt off and put more Vaseline on my arms after the 80km mark, the wet Tshirt started to rub too much apart from that I had a great run went for a 8km walk run on Sunday morning and hope to run again on Thursday
No need for maps just the directions a great run and well worth doing part or all the course, well done to all the runners who competed
My aim for Glasshouse 100 is to do the first 80km in about 10hrs and go under 24hrs so far on track for both
Thanks Kevin for you help on and day and organizing a great run, a run I wouldn’t miss it, be back next year
Lou

Agreed, I don't believe fatass runs were ever intended for qualification purposes.

Back on topic I've posted a report here

Seeing as some of us are in the mood for debating, I would like to debate the statement below.
