Thought some of you might be interested in this guy http://www.myspace.com/4000kman
He is friend of my family and recently set off on a run from Melbourne to Cape York. He is running 40km a day for 4 months with one rest day per week.
Reason for doing this = because he wants to.
Everyone kept telling him he needed to raise money for a cause or something, but he just wanted to get away from everything and have a bit of an adventure.
Good on him I reckon!

Not sure why he is doing it in mid summer? Very hot in the south and very wet in the north with some roads cut. Also quite a few storms about. As he said in his blog ..

"All the "I told you so's" are right it is the wrong time of the year, it is too hot!!"

Has he run any ultra races in Australia before?

He will succeed because of his fantastic facial hair. :)

Hmmm - he is also a Pisces which probably explains why he is doing it now - I'm always making things extra hard for myself.

The potential book (cover) looks good.

sorry Phil but I do agree with your subsequent comment and perhaps my tongue wasn't protruding from my cheek enough - but I had meant to put cover originally

all the best  david

Yeah, I agree, I think his facial hear will hold him in good stead.
He has run lots of ultras but most of them have been overseas. Rob is my father-inlaw's best mate, and as I have only been married less than a year, I'm still just starting to get the full story of his running exploits. I know he has run a multiday ultra in Mongolia and another across the Morocan desert I think. He also tried to run from the top of Tassie to the bottom but I'm pretty sure something went wrong on that trip and he didn't make it. He clearly is slightly insane though, which obviously helps when you like to run ultras.
He has been writing his book for a couple of years and from what he has told me, it is about the things he has learned on his runs and various adventures. Should be interesting...

Ok. Change my mind about the book then, if it includes previous exploits! good on him!

Absolutely admire what you are doing and sorry you won't be coming anywhere near Sydney, because I would love to run a small part of your trip. Of course you know you are bloody mad to do it this time of year due to the wet season, but then, most discoveries & best adventures are done by those considered insane. Last year I broke my shoulderblade falling off my pushie so as part of my healing process I to drive my Pajero to Cape York. I was told I was mad but I did it & loved every minute of it. Are you planning on taking the Overland Telegraph Track or the bypass roads? You'll be able to run the track but your support vehicle definitely won't. The river crossings are too steep & deep. Best of luck.

Hi SMC42K,
Rob probably wont be looking at this site while he is on the run, but I'm sure he would appreciate your tips if you posted them on his MySpace site...
In fact, any encouragement would be well received at the moment I reckon. He seems to be having a few problems and could probably do with a bit of a boost.

Cheers.

I'd talked to Robert via email a couple of times and it's worth noting he had no choice but to call the run off at 3,500 K's as the wet season had made the road impassable. Nevertheless a top effort  :) ,
