Well I'm going to my 1st nationals ever and I'm still an under 18's athlete from NSW and I'm racing in the under 20's as the NSW 2nd team reserve so pretty stoked be going to my 1st nationals and stepping up an age group too! Nah NSW is the better state as we have the better team in the open mens on paper! And I promises that they will knock Victoria of the top spot on the team podium!!

At these Championships it's often facinating watching the younger secondary school age groups. The reason I say this is that it is the first year out of the primary school format where the fields become significantly larger and where the training that some kids are doing seems to contribute more to their performance than was the case at primary school age where many kids run pretty much on natural talent alone.

As a result this is the age where it is possible for a few unknowns that no one has ever heard of to surface and also prove to themselves that they can really run. It means that it would take a brave person to tip any winners/medalists at U/14 level. As I say quite interesting to observe.

Oh and to answer the original question of this thread....I'm not putting in any tips, but what I will say is that I'll be cheering on the competitors from the smaller states and territories (WA, SA, TAS & ACT). It would be nice to see a few medals and placings going out side the big three  :D .

Yeah Skinnyboy. Would be nice to see a couple of Tasmanians figuring at the pointy end of their fields, punching above their weightclass like they do in a couple of other sports (mainly cycling and rowing).

watch out for Sean Lee in your race, he is only U15 so i don't think he can win, but is very talented over the longer stuff, he may come top 5, Dylan should go well.

I'll be there too.
First job will be to guide my AWD around the course (and it's not all that easy running tethered to a 16y.o), and then, because otherwise I will miss 4 days of training/racing, I'll be taking on the open race as an additional runner, trying not to get lapped by Liam Adams and co.
What are the chances of me "doing a Bradbury" and having the entire field fall over somewhere and I get to be National Champion   :D

Hell yeah  :)

Checked out Sean Lee's results at qland scools x and he was 29 seconds slower than Dylan over same course. might be hard to get top 5. I expect Dylan, Jack Stapleton, Riley Cox,Trent Radin all to be tough. I hope I can medal, all depends how much form I lost with my 18 days of no running and two weeks total rest... ran shit on my first run back today. I did 25 mins jog and everything hurt except where I had my surgery. :D
how do you think you will go Track runner?? top 5 for you?

and tiger boy, do you mean literally tethered together?? cos yes I agree that would be really hard.

Sean was jogging the last klm or so, he had such a huge lead, he had a bit left for sure.

i'll be surprised to get top 5, will be happy with top 10. I ran yesterday and pulled up with a sore hip so did a 1hr bike ride today instead of long run. Hopefully its just a niggle.
I was 70 kg at allschools which is to heavy 4 me, i hope to be 66 at nationals and that alone should pull 30 seconds back.
See what happens  :D

Yes, literally. We have a strap that goes one end around my wrist, and one end around his. We have measured it at 49cm, (because IAAF rules state a maximum length of 50cm for guide runners).
Under the rules, I can not run in front of him (in case it is deemed he is being "pulled along"), and I can't give any coaching instructions.
All I can tell him is stuff like when to turn, or to look out for potholes, puddles, tree branches, etc. I usually tell him if there is a change of surface underfoot too (e.g. going from grass to a gravel path, or crossing a road).
We ran about 15.44 for the 3km in the Vics, but then they have to do the calculations between the different categories to see who medals.
Good luck to all of you that made it through to represent your respective states, regardless of where you place, you have already achieved something that a lot of us never will.

Tiger boy would I have to do the same?? As a girl from my school is going and I got her to nationals at the NSW all schools and have been asked to run with her as her race is at 10 something and my race is at 12:55 I think so would be heaps of time to recover for my race!! As I think she Is a T13 blind or something not too sure. But would I gave to be roped with her??

WC - Check with the race organisers, but my understanding is that you will.
My boy is a T13, (visually impaired) and we were advised at the schools cross country that it was necessary to be tethered.
The IPC rules only talk about T11 and T12, and mention track races, so we made sure it would be allowable for a T13 in XC, and it was approved on the basis that because it was not on a track, and that XC has twists, turns, potholes etc. that it should be OK. (A T13 isn't entitled to a guide in a track race).
Are you sure you won't compromise your race by running with her? What sort of time does she run for 3km?

TB, its great to see him & you make the National XC, I remember about five years ago you telling me about your job at Little Aths helping, and years later he has made it to Nationals and to be honest, you are a BIG reason why, without your support he probably wouldn't have made it and I was rapt to hear you too were going with him!

And to all above, it is GREAT to see some talk about a National Championship here on CR.

Thanks Stu, but methinks you're being a little generous.
You've done a great job with your juniors too, and I have no doubt that you are one of the big reasons why WES are such a strong club, and hae so many promising juniors coming through its ranks.

But you are right it's great to see some talk on the National XC on these pages.

Pleasing to see some posters tipping West Aussie Ethan Heywood in U/20's and Tasmanian Skinnyboy in U/16's amongst the medal possibilities.....as I say go the smaller states! Would be good to see the NSW/VIC/QLD status quo upset a little if possible. :D

Hopefully a couple of others from the WA/SA/TAS/ACT can rise to the occasion and strutt their stuff. It's possible that there are a few too, don't worry about that :).

Big call on a couple of your predictions.  There are a couple of gun NSW runners in the U14's who will give Lachlan Cook a run for his money.

Also, just a correction on the age groups you used, for example, the 14's and 15's make up the Under 16's, etc.

Well my tips for my race are in the under 20's

1. Kevin Batt NSW

2. Ethan Haywood( about 10 seconds behind) WA

3. David Ricketts( about a minute behind Batt) NSW

And my pick for the reams is

1.NSW( hopefully I'll be in the team but unlikely)

2. VIC

3.QLD

Agree with you Marvo, pretty big call tipping a QLD 1,2,3. I hear from a far that Dau Akol ran very fast at NSW trials and he's U/14 am I right? Plus a couple not too far away from him?

Additionally, as I said in an earlier post it's always possible for a couple of unknowns to pop up, especially at this age......means no one can be taken lightly :D

Just a word of caution for those tipsters, it is very hard to judge acurately how quick athletes in other states are running by looking at X/C results on the internet. For example, I know that in a couple of the southern states, courses were very slow due to heavy conditions this year.

Well Dau is from my club and he's Been injured apparently as he told me he hasn't been at training for 6wks and that was last week so he might be back this week. But what do you expect he's from Sudan so he has the african genes. He ran at regional athletics last week and he did the first lap of his 800m in a 64 then ended up doing a 2:13 so he's in great from  so it wouldn't surprise me if he's on the podium in either the gold or silver but I think he won't be in the brozne position.

All the Victorian teams are on the Aths Vic website under 'News':
U14-U20
http://www.athsvic.o.....20for web.pdf
Open
http://www.athsvic.o.....20for web.pdf
Plus School Sport teams, course maps & schedule

Probably have to trawl each state's site for their respective teams

I think last year full start lists became available a couple of days prior to the meet on the AA website. Hopefully it will be similar this year. Therefore I'd presume maybe sometime next week.

In the Under 16's, don't rule out Luke Percy and Zak Patterson from Victoria. Luke in particular is having a great season. Don't know if they'll medal, but they could be in the mix.
Dark horse for that one, Riley Kennedy. He's bee ntraining the house down over the last few weeks and is looking sharp. Probably won't medal, but will give a good account of himself.

Hmm, wouldn't be backing Kane Grimster or Luke Percy, as it doesn't appear either of them named in Vic teams

Had a look at the start lists, and noticed they have ages next to the open runners.
I'm the oldest in the field by 7 years!!

Yes, there's a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Would you say possibly a little of the latter going on here Blondy?
