The thing I like most about long-distance running is the fact that the only pre-requisite is desire.  This characteristic is what I refer to as "The Rocky Factor."  You don't have to be fast, you don't have to be strong, you don't have to be big, you don't have to possess any talent to succeed.  You just have to "want it."   If you are able to "want it" enough success is guaranteed.

The "rocky factor" I like it, nothing better than doing hill sprints getting to the top of the last one with a big rocky like scream..

It depends how you define success. If you just want to beat your own PB's then perhaps what you are saying is true however if you want to be able to beat most other runners then you will need a certain amount of natural ability.

Rocky is a fairytale and I am sure there are other fairytale films that might be about running however you are not going to be a world champion unless you have an extreme amount of natural ability. Sure enough you will also need determination and the will to succeed however no amount of training can make up for a lack of natural talent if you want to be really successful.

But still to most of us running is a personal thing where we just want to beat ourselves so for that part of it, I agree with your comments.

Are you suggesting that if Kilian gave me one shot to take him on one-on-one for the title of world champion I wouldn't be able to heroically only just lose?  Even if I had a full 4 weeks to train, a big supply of eggs, a crusty old coach and the love of a good woman and the love of a good dog?
