The most useless thing I ever found: a shot gun cartridge, unsused - I don't own a gun!
Cutest thing I ever found: a baby echidna - he/she didn't want to talk to me. I went home and got a sack an took it to Wires. Even the baby ones have sharp spines.
Saddest thing I ever found: a couple of bottles of Carona lying in the gutter in the direct sun, argh....

running is the ideal scrounger's pursuit. usually you're out there early in the morning so can grab the goodies and drag them home without anyone knowing...except the wife of course, who said if I bring anything else home though I am dead meat....

The driver of the car just waved to me and sped off up the road. I just stood there for a moment looking at this poor little roo, then kept going before I seized up (was on a long 28km run).
Scary stuff.

What a great tribute to a runner! After that I rather felt like I was running the remainder of the run with Stewart, although I suspect he probably flew up those hills much more easily then I did.

I had started out just before dawn to do a few laps on a local 400m grass track and noticed a number of RAAF guys and gals setting up a hot air balloon in an adjacent area. My curiosity impelled me to trot across when I had finished my short session to see what was going on. They were arranging the tethered balloon as a recruitment promotion while a Defence Air Display was being held nearby on the Townsville waterfront. I was invited to sample a basket ride conditional on wearing a T-shirt as protection against possible sparks from the burner.
Agreed. So, I got my tethered flight and wore the new shirt home.
It demonstrates that if you get yourself out of bed and go running, you can sometimes be pleasantly surprised with the result.

Roadkill - 1 cat & 1 koala - also on separate occasions.
And there's always a shoe - doesn't matter when I go out for a run, there's always a shoe. Never a pair, just a single shoe!

Got home and checked on the net, and found out it was worth almost $500 Australian. There was no name or any other info so my parents let me keep it. Not long after i was the proud owner of a playstation portable.
Thanks to some careless Japanese tourist who helped stimulate our economy,

I've also found a wallet (returned to owner with money intact), a small esky (still have it in my kitchen, its great), and a couple blokes with their car bogged in the middle of no where. Luckily the running group got the guys out or else they would have been up for a 20km walk back into town!

Wasn't running at the time, but when I was living in Hong Kong (where I grew up) a friend and I were walking to the local shops and came across a young dog that had been tied up in a hessian sack and dumped in a wheelie bin. Got my parents to drive over and my dad then washed it (it was covered in its own urine and faeces). Gave it to the RSPCA later that day so don't know what happened to it.
Pretty sad when stuff like this happens.
As for running, when I was in high school (here in Brisbane) we had to go for an early morning run for cross-country training. Went to our first class about an hour later when we were told that we'd actually run past someone who had hung himself during the night. His body was still there hanging and we could see it from our classroom window, but I'm just sooooo glad that none of us noticed it! Would probably still be having nightmares today...

Off course at least it was still alive, better than the usual road kill I generally see on runs to work.

Probably not. Beer does not respond well to large swings in temperature. In addition to this, Corona in a clear bottle is a big candidate for light strike. Basically UV light reacts with humulone (hop alpha acid) to create a skunky aroma.

That reminds me in my younger and stupider days I found a XXXX stubby basking in the sun on a North QLD beach. Well straight into the icy eski it went and straight off to the doctors surgery went chilli for stitches as the freebee exploded on immersion in the ice.

I didn't get out for a shuffle til this afternoon (figured I should try to get over this cold/cough thing first), but I did find my lone blue and white stripy armwarmer, off to the side of the bike path, not looking too bad for having suffered a week's worth of Melbourne weather. Made the run kind of worth it, seeing as it felt harder than usual - probably a combination of warmer weather, the tail end of this cold, and the week off from running...

Warning. Don't read all my post if you are upset by dead animals, skip to the last paragraph.
I found a large Wombat too about a month ago on a normally closed fire trail, it had only been hit the night before from a 4WD guessing by the tyre tracks. There was hardly any damage though that I could see, just a small amount of un-clotted blood on the ground near its nose, which rested near the tracks. She was upright with all legs stretched out. I rolled her over to discover 2 fairly large legs outside of the pouch, unfortunately the joey was also dead, but due to the scratches underneath on the ground, I believe may have still been alive post accident. I'm no wildlife expert, but with the weight of the dead mother lying prostrate on the ground, I couldn't possibly see how the baby could have escaped the pouch without outside assistance. Not that it probably would have been able to have fended for itself if it could have escaped, but its size did make me wonder. It also annoyed me that whoever hit the wombat did nothing to move it off the trail or check for young.
Anyway sorry if I have upset anyone, but the purpose of my post is if you do come across recent native road kill, do roll them over to check for a pouch and more importantly any contents still alive. There are wildlife rescue services in most areas these days that can assist.

Not just a small goanna it was a dinosaur!
Head to tail it was almost the width of the track! (small road)
What a spectacular sight! A little apprehensive... I slowed to a trot...
It looked me up and down and continued on it's merry way!
How great it is to see such things!
PS - Nobody in my house believes me...

A lot of my runs are stench-assisted. I've just got away from one rotting corpse when I'm up to the next one. Mostly wallabies or paddemelons.
Nobody yet has been able to give me a satisfactory explanation why the roadkill toll is so high in Tassie.
Fortunately I haven't killed anything myself yet.
As for things I've found, I came across a nice little pile of nails and screws once. Weighed me down for the rest of the run, but it was worth it. Things like that are always useful.

Reported it to the cops on the way home but will be surprised if I ever hear anything.
For my CR "neighbours" (bennie, Morley, Brettsrun etc) it was at the lookout just near Brimbank Park. In hindsight a stupid place to park as its notorious, but the park gates were locked. Should have gone to the Tan or Canning St. Live and learn!.

a bag of marijuana, many snakes, tools, wheel jacks off trailers, knives, 2 drumkits!, lots of great timber esp. for concreting, the list goes on!
I have also lost plenty of stuff too!

Although I wasn't running on the road - I was running on one of the Uni ovals at about 5am, when I heard some rustling behind me, thought it might have been a possum, but it was doing that sliding/walking thing and realised it was a fox - a reddish brown, bushy tail, long skinny snout fox!
It was quite tame though, I'd run and it would run next to me, and I sat down and it came and sat next to me, was quite nice!
It came back out to greet me a few times after that, and would do laps around the oval with me, but one of the greenkeepers that saw me with it said they will eventually have to catch it and put it down because it would eat the possums. I haven't seen it in ages

What's a vinyl record?
Wait I'm old enough to not qualify to ask that question. I had to exlain to a group of 13/14 yr old what a 'negative' was the other day. I think people are treating 5c pieces as a throw away item as I pick them up on runs all the time.
