Had an idea whilst I was out training around the Lake at Amaroo (nth Canberra - Sth Goulburn) this morning. I think the lake is also referred to as Yerrabai Ponds. It would be a perfect venue for a Fun Run. Has the toilets and bbq's, traffic free, relatively flat, scenic and just a top venue. I think the distance is about 4km completely around, so one could do a 4km/8km Fun Run/walk. I would have to get a group or club to help me before I committed to organising it.

My question: What would be a good time of year in Canberra to organise it?

Feedback please.

Maybe late January? Have a look at the Canberra Cross Country Club's website to look for where a fun run could be needed - there's little to do over summer.

North Canberra/Gungahlin might be a good club to get behind this one if they want too, they don't organise any fun runs so far, but with the increase of people in the suburbs out here it might be time for this to happen.

You'd need to have some sort of random draw for the family entries, since there are many families that walk around Yerabbi Pond.

The distance right around is 3.75k.

Yerabbi is the Ngunnawal people's word for walk.

Thanks Aki. I was thinking of contacting the local Gungalin community group as well!  I think the area near the skateboard park is the obvious start/finish area!  Will put the thinking cap on!

Trouble is - Every time I implement a new Fun Run or ultra in an area, the RAAF decides to move me on!

Hi there,
A fun run at Yerrabi sounds great, especially considering I live so close by! It intrigues me that I might pass other coolrunners running around the lake, but don't know it! Is there an Amaroo/Gungahlin running club that I could join and maybe meet some people over some speedwork?
Anyway, to all those Amaroo coolrunners...hope to meet you soon...
and by the way, sorry for hijacking this thread!
-Emma.

Why not do a Mothers Day Classic.  Went to the last one in Sydney.  There's an 8 km run, 4 km run and a 4km walk.

Thanks Daisy6 and Flying Dog.

I think there is a Nth Canberra running club  but not sure of the details.

It's funny i met Allrounder last sunday going around the lake. But that was only because she was wearing her CR gear!

I'll give you a clue on my appearance. I"ll be wearing a Tigers cap, but you will be surprised at what Im not doing. :-)

I'll be busy for a couple of couple of weeks, but should be running with this idea when I get back to normal!

I may be running around Yerabbi Pond on Saturday afternoon - I have long red hair so you can't miss me.  I'm still trying to work out if I'm doing Yaralumla relays or going to a concert however.

Hijacking? What highjacking? Ultraphil, you need to change the topic to 'Amaroo CRs'.

To all you guys out in Gunghalin area (Sth Goulburn area as you call it) there is a North Canberra Gunghalin Athletics Club. Here is a link to their website http://www.ncga.coolrunning.com.au/.
The ACTCCC ran a race at Yerabbi ponds this year. I missed it but a lot of people enjoyed it. It was Sat 12 Aug. Distance is measured as 3.8 kms.

Ultraphil, the traditional 'fun run season' in Canberra goes from now until November. The problem with having a fun run from December to February is the heat.  Fun Runs need to start at a reasonable hour. It's hard to get people out of bed on a Sunday morning if you start much before 9am. Some time in March might work although the Weston Creek Half is in March.

If you decide to go for a winter fun run, you could start later. In May and early June the weather is usually okay.  You'd want to avoid clashing with the Canberra Half , the Italian Fun Run and Terry Fox.

You'd want to check with the ACT Vets. If you have a fun run on their monthly handicap day, not many vets will turn up. Also, you want to avoid the 'Jogalong' (1st Sunday of the month).

By the way, I thought Gunghalin was south Yass.

Thanks Wombatface.  It's always half the battle finding a spot in the calender!

Hey Phil, You should organize the 54 laps race with the short 27 laps option.
Start Friday midnight.

Hope You not going to organize fun run in Iran in the near future
