Whilst many Ultra runners are off doing the Great North Ultras this weekend, it's worth remembering that down in Moe we also have the Victorian 6 Hour and 50KM Track Championships. Always a good event put on by the Traralgon Harriers and back problems notwithstanding i'll be back there again this year, hope to see a few Coolrunners there,
Kelvin

Though underdone I'll be back again this year as it is a VERY well run event. Just hope it doesn't get too warm like last year. Hoping to finish off a very ordinary year with a good run and create a bit of momentum going in to next year. Certainly won't be starting next year off with Bogong like this year, it wrote me off for a long while.

I believe that a very famous "Uncle" from Sydney is heading for the event as well! I would have been if my work trip to East Sale was on!...but it was cancelled!

Hi guys, do you need to be a member of an 'ultra' association or can anyone enter?

Open to anyone, Easy Tiger.  It's well worth the trip down to Gippsland, the event is very well organised by a very friendly and welcoming club [Traralgon Harriers] at a first class venue.  I spoke to Dawn Parris on the phone today and she won't be running this year.......sadly, as she has the best legs in the ultra world!

Hot off the presses.

The incomparable Uncle Dave has done it again.  Charging through the marathon point in approx 2:37, Dave has broken the Oz 50km record with a 3:05:42

Just confirming that Dave's run of 3:05:42 was a national track record beating Bruce Cook's 3:09 from 1989.

On the road, Mick McIntyre has a 2:54 at Canberra in 2001.

Congrats to Dave - he is a reall star.

Just make sure that the paperwork is filled out properly, not a record unless that's done right (and proof of track measurement). Lots of unhappy campers over last 20 years due to lack of required proof.

Whilst waiting for Eagle/Daz at GNW100 yesterday my thoughts turned to my favourite Uncle & what was happening down in Melbourne.  So I rang him & he gave me the fantastic news!!

I'm sooo lucky to have Uncle as a good friend & someone who is always willing to give me a hand with my many questions about racing & triathlon.

HUGE CONGRATS UNCLE!!!

AK :)

It looks like 6:11 100km possible :)

So what happened after 50km ?

Did Uncle call it a day, or did he continue in 6 H race ??

What are the 6 H results ?

Great runs and congratulations Dave and Kelvin. Two runners that you can really rely on for good results,
and Shirley Young- amazing.

It's a race I'd love to do, but this year I went for a Great North Walk.

It was great to catch up with a few old friends over the weekend, and make a few new (old  :)  ) ones in Phil Lear and Jim Crawford, with whom I travelled down to Moe from Melbourne. (Thanks also for being an excellent crwe Jim!)

The race is held on a good quality synthetic track, with electronic timing and friendly and supportive officials Hot showers and nice nibblys at the end always adds a good touch, and I hope the race grows to get the number of competitors it deserves.

Sandra Timmer-Arends showed the her recent 100k in Korea didn't do her any harm by winning the womens' 50k, while Kelvin backed up from last weeks' second place at the Portland Marathon to nab the 6hr title. To see Shirley Young just being out there doing what she loves was great; for her to win was a bonus.

Anyway, better go catch up on some sleep!

Have to admit that it was very much as my original post here "back notwithstanding i'd be there", i was glad i did make it there as it was something just to see Dave's performance in the 50K's wonder how long till i see a run of such quality again up close  :) .
Possibly not as many competitors as in previous years as i think it was often a final hitout for local Colac 6 Day runners, certainly at 8 the drizzle that had followed me down the highway had left and it looked like pretty good conditions although last minute i grabbed my gloves and put them on (must have been good weather they only lasted 5 laps).
Basically my plan this year was to go out comfortably and slightly conservatively for the first couple of hours and then hopefully work up a bit of pace and rhythm, just anything to make it different from the last 3 years hadn't felt well from the word go and just didn't want another day out like those. Having run very comfortably to and from work the last couple of weeks in the Nike Frees reckoned they were the ideal shoe for the giving athletic track rather than the more cushioned racing flats. Was on pretty consistent 2 minute lap pace, and basically keeping pace with most of the field other than Dave who was pretty much giving us windburn as he flew by, and was happy to be pretty much doing exactly what i planned (with the thought in the back of the head of 70K's) although was a little bit further behind the Traralgon Harriers i'd normally expect to be battling with Twitey, Sandra Timmer-Arends and Richard Comber. After about 2 hours i realised it was certainly a Dave first, daylight second scenario and with the perfect weather conditions probably not too hard to be out for 6 hours. 2:37 and that was a marathon for Dave, off hand i was around 30K's so knew picking him up wasn't an issue but come three hours (and about 3 laps to his 50K), i'd finally worked out that i was around 4 laps behind Twitey and third in the 50 so that fired me up somewhat and seemed to finally get a better pace and rhythm and was beginning to make headway on his lead, final story there being Twitey second in 4:03:18 and me 3rd in 4:04 (just like last week run out of race to catch the bloke in front  :) ), he was happy to just walk a couple of safety laps and that left me a few laps ahead.
Between Dave's finish and my 50K's the weather had deteriorated somewhat with a bit of rain and chilling breeze at times, but in true Melbourne weather tradition (if you don't like it wait a minute  :) ) it was then beginning to get humid and steamy when the sun come out, with a good tailwind on one side and headwind on the other. Soon enough Sandra had finished as first 50K woman and i was left something like 10 laps ahead of the next competitor Warren Holst with Trevor Marsh close behind, still comfortable but beginning to stiffen up, simple fact that's been proven by my chiropractor over the years i'm much better running anti-clockwise (the first 3 hours) than clockwise (can recall a number of racehorses with that same problem - even the mighty "Kingston Town"), and i was beginning to get a sore back again but by then was content to just keep moving as i knew whether i stopped or not i'd still feel pain.
Can't claim to have been unhappy when the bell went for 6 hours, almost the 70K's i wanted (69.3 i think 173 and a bit laps), with Warren and Trevor in the low 160's by memory. My best 6 Hour performance there since my first time in 1997 (off hand my 4th fastest 50K there though) yesterday being my 8th start, so was pretty happy although by now quite sunburnt on the shoulders.
As usual a good get together at the end with good food and great hosts, although i'd admit to feeling a little guilty getting the lions share of trophies (ie 2) when compared Dave's performance.
Would be good to have a larger field next year, off hand 18 individuals and 3 relay teams, somehwhat down on the usual numbers i think.
Another amazing performance from Shirley Young, congratulations also to Brian Glover backing up from his 9th race walk win at the previous weeks Portland 3 Bays Marathon with over 50K walking.
Still waiting for the results but i know Coolrunner RB had a hard day with 54K's or so, and the everpresent Peter Gray did over a marathon.
As for me, i think i proved again to myself that 6 Hours is enough on a track (i've got a score to settle with the track at Caboolture 12 Hour so may make an exception for it), personally think some people are more suited to this type of racing than others. For that matter some people must be suited more to different forms of nutrition during races, after he'd finished Dave gave me a donut and i took 2 laps to eat it and felt like i was going choke at one stage, looks like i'd better stick to my sticky buns.

Congratulations also to Kelvin for a solid run following a year of epic runs. 69.3K is not too shabby at all.

It would have been interesting to see what Uncle Dave might have made if he went on for the 6h. Maybe we'll see Unc head to Gosford for a crack at 12h, 150K?

Well done all... especially Uncle Dave. It's great to see that he has emerged from a very serious knee injury that would have put an end to the career of most other athletes. Full marks for his tenacity and perserverance. Anyone who would cycle Syd-Melb-Syd as a recuperative measure gets a big round of applause from me.

It would be nice to get some good pics for the upcoming issue of Ultramag... if anyone has any please email them to info@goldcoast100.com

Again, well done to the organisers

RMC i'd be honest and say that 24 Hours will happen for me one day (mainly to get the monkey off my back of never having done 100 miles in 24 Hours other than on trails), but i'm putting no timeframe on it, having done a couple of 24 Hour walks (back when the 24 Hour walk was a seperate event on a different day to the run at Coburg), not sure that going around in circles for that period of time is really my thing, need a place to run to, and frankly it feels twice as long timewise than if done somewhere else.
Looking at those official results, look like Dave ran it a bit closer than we thought but it takes nothing away from his supurb effort.
