I considered using a blog to pass on official info about this year's event, but decided that its easier to use a CoolRunning thread. It will encourage more feedback and discussion.
Entry forms and Info book will be posted to the website tonight. Online entry will be open monday or Tues latest. Entries will be in the post "about a week afterwards" Key changes for this year : - We will send everyone an entry form, but only new people will get an information book, and we will have a process for people to request an info book to be sent, but it will be easier to get fromt he website - Entry fees stay the same but have allowed entries after 1st March right up until the race number picjk up on the Friday - Change to mob run trophy - best 6 in team - Extend early start to include Females over-50 not just over-55 - addition of 4th start wave - 8am, 8:05, 8:20, 8:35 as well as early start (3 waves + early last year) - 24-time finishers get a Permanent number ie If you finish the event 24 times under the cutoff then you will receive a permanent number eg 1 if you are the first person to complete 24 six foots. if you are the 2nd person then you will receive #2. If you are the 3rd to accomplish this feat, then you get to wear number 3 for life and no other person can be awarded this number. Award a large glass photo frame with a clean racenumber in the centre, and a personal history of all their runs listed, and as many photos of them running the event as we can get, this can then be hung on a wall at home etc as a permanent memento, Gets to choose which wave they start in for life, Gets free race entry for life - Salt, sun screen on aid stations - Slight change to withdrawl policy given extended entry period - Two 7hr sweepers instead of one - Brooch option for females instead of buckles - New website design "any week now" - Additional timing mat at start of funnel on Nellies to catch cheats (potential) - Black Range Rd closed to non-residents (except bicycles, pedestrians) ie trail bikes, 4wd (potential) - Portaloos at caves rd (potential) - Boring stuff like a new mail box, new fax number. -------------------- |

I like the extra wave start which should help with the congestion you had last year. Although from reading the threads, the tree didn't help that.
Good idea for the new timing mat to stop the claim jumpers from getting a head start. Good change to the mob run as I thought a trophy for the most runners from a club didn't benefit any small clubs. Only the large ones like the Striders. Look forward to getting the entry in. Thanks Kevin. -------------------- |

Do people really cheat on this run? There is plenty of evidence that people do. At least the measure will give us a greater confidence of who started in the right waves. Although there are mats at the start, it is possible to dodge them. We marked it as a (potential) as we are still thinking about it. -------------------- |

I cannot believe people would undertake such a challenge only to CHEAT. The thought process involved makes no sense at all. You either do it and do it all or you don't. How could you look at your medal and believe you desrved it? I am a PE Teacher and we get kids cheating on the Cross Country. The difference is that it is COMPULSORY. No one is making you do the SIXFOOT....you are doing it for the challenge. I don't care if it takes 12 hours, you get from point A to point B no matter what. Does that include cheating??????????? I remember doing my first one and a Rural Fire Track pulled up alongside. The driver said jump on the back for a Km or 2....'no one will know he said'.................My reply was that "I would know for the rest of my Life that I cheated" I defies logical thought. -------------------- Benny G

The thought process for cheating? It makes sense to that person. They justify it to themselves. C2S they will say too many people in wrong place, so they start at the Kings Cross and beyond. Outside assistance, doesn't hurt anyone. Yet the person/s in front and behind don't have that luxury or advantage. Cutting corners in SMH half marathon. What's the problem with that the cheats will say. Six foot, SOS, people in wrong place, trail too narrow. I shouldn't have to run behind that person/s. For Rural Fire Truck to pull up and offer lift, the ethics of that person comes in to question in he/she just doesn't belong there. He / she doesn't get it. I suggest people don't turn a blind eye to cheating in all events. If you feel you can still justify cheating then you have missed the point completely. |

Thomo and Colin,
thank You so much, I was worried I would not be able to sleep. But I bought the map, just to play it safe. The map is smaller than 6 foot however. Could walk it in 7 hours perhaps but would have to bent the knees on the steeper uphills -------------------- 2008 : 20 km racewalk VRWC,

sadly cheating is a harsh reality - even in events such as this where you would least expect it.
i recall runners being bust at Comrades for grabbing a taxi & eliminating most of the run, or having the run 'shared' between twin brothers etc etc - unbelievable. (how do they train for the event - ie do they even bother to train for the full distance in case their plan doesn't work??) |

I have a mix feeling about race cheating.
We probably all agree in the situation, when the cheater is trying to winn a medal, some championship, win a prize money, to get qualifying spot in a team etc. But in the situatuion, when the cheater is not getting actually anything from the cheating, I am not sure. The braggings rights have no real value. So sometimes I feel pissed of, but sometimes I feel sorry for the cheaters, and sometimes I actually feel it is lots of fun and have good laught at them. The cheaters pays the full entry for the oportunity to run the whole course, and than does not run it whole or at all. So who is really cheated here ? Perhaps the cheaters should get discount entry ? If the race is raising money for something, from memory I believe 6FT is fire services money riser ??? than if thats the case I would encourage even more cheaters to enter - they pay the money, and they do not crowd the trails, do not drink the water and eat the melons or gu, they do not litter the trails. To make it even more efficient, so they dot use the transport, and do not use the strat numbers, chips, take places in start waves etc, why not simply sell to the cheaters the buckle and finish certificate ? For extra money they could nominate the finish time, they wanna have printed on the certificate, and all can be mailed to them, so the cheaters do not have to turn up on the day. -------------------- 2008 : 20 km racewalk VRWC,
Knox half in 5F, Coburg 10km in 5F, 10 km run pancake champ at Willi in fivefingers 2009 : 24H Coburg Centurion walk, 48H Caboolture walk, 24H Adelaide run |

Isnt it wonderful how 'holier than thou' people are on the subject of what 'they' perceive as 'cheating', of course all those who are so damming in their condemnation of others are too righteous to have EVER cut a corner somewhere or did something in their life that could ever be seen as 'wrong'. Ohhh, look at those cheaters, they cut that corner by 6 inches, arent they scum??!!! how can they live with themselves??

By "cheating" we meant people dodging the mat at the start whilst starting in a different wave than allocated. eg wants to run in first wave, but is allocated in 2nd wave so starts in wave 1 anyway (and just skips past the timing mat). We never suggested people cut the course. We might just lock down where the mats are so that they can't be by-passed.
Out of all the changes to the race, this is the last one I expected a discussion about. -------------------- |

Kev, I know what you mean and wasnt trying to start a discussion on 'cheating' in the 6 foot, I was more being rhetorical and thinking of all those other threads like C2Surf, where 'cutting corners' is like committing herasey to some, the 'concept' of 'cheating' was being waxed, not the 'actual change for 6 foot, never even thought of it being read that way!
so please everyone.....dont start a discussion on cheating!! at 6 foot or anywhere else! This post has been edited by Bristol City FC: Dec 11 2006, 09:59 AM -------------------- The reason I love running is because it feels so good when I stop.

Out of all the changes to the race, this is the last one I expected a discussion about. thats the risk the changes are good, another wave, and entry till the day before is good, allows for those undecided for various reasons - injury, family, work etc, some might only run in suitable weather so may wait for the last weatherforcast (hope thats not cheating ?). So the only topic left to discussion is why males have no option of brooche instead of a buckle ? where is the equality here -------------------- 2008 : 20 km racewalk VRWC,
Knox half in 5F, Coburg 10km in 5F, 10 km run pancake champ at Willi in fivefingers 2009 : 24H Coburg Centurion walk, 48H Caboolture walk, 24H Adelaide run |

Obviously Rudolphs a metro................. what is obvious, is not always the reality. why would You need a buckle ? thats from the time, when the heavy duty belt was holding the guns as well as the pants, so the need for the buckle. In the modern era, nobody sticks the guns down their pants anymore. From the garmin You can fire the missile, so the brooche can help to pin the white birdy peace symbol to Your shirt -------------------- 2008 : 20 km racewalk VRWC,

Trust Rudolf to broach that subject
Looking at the thread there is actually not much about cheating but a lot about various levels of quality of ?humour? and direct support for some tightening of the timing mechanism policies. The starting mat was listed as potential and it seems that there is some support for it to be made reality. What is particularly good is that all these changes and possible changes appear to be positive and have been touted with plenty of time for discussion like this. Great job Kevin. The brooch option is in response to requests from females that don't wear buckles. P15 of the info book states: "6 finishes – Pewter Six Foot Track Marathon Belt Buckle or brooch" no mention that males can't get one.

Kevin,
Like the changes, particularly mob run, extra start wave and this one: - 24-time finishers get a Permanent number ie If you finish the event 24 times under the cutoff then you will receive a permanent number eg 1 if you are the first person to complete 24 six foots. if you are the 2nd person then you will receive #2. If you are the 3rd to accomplish this feat, then you get to wear number 3 for life and no other person can be awarded this number. Award a large glass photo frame with a clean racenumber in the centre, and a personal history of all their runs listed, and as many photos of them running the event as we can get, this can then be hung on a wall at home etc as a permanent memento, Gets to choose which wave they start in for life, Gets free race entry for life Now that is something to aim for! If only more races had this incentive. Only 23 to go... -------------------- I am a 6ft Sicko!

I welcome it all the best David I think Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (showing my age) was BCFC's favourite show, especially when they said "dive, dive, dive" I think "The lady doth protest too much, methinks. William Shakespeare. In this case BCFC I hope you've got enough bandwidth for all the online entries tomorrow?? Not to mention the extra timing mats |

In this case BCFC Not to mention the extra timing mats David "need a new brain",..........where do you get the 'dive' analogy from????? and as I'm not as much of on old f$%t as you, your wrong about my favouriite show, it was in fact Tiswas. Thomo, isnt it time you came out of the closet and dropped that t in front of your name? ...I wasnt protesting about anything 6 foot, new or old,......all that happenned is that reading the changes and the referral to 'cheaters' just made me daydream about all the other threads about people cutting corners, in C2S for example, and all the idignant and righteous posters condemming those who cut a couple of feet off a race by going through a park or whatever,...now I am not supporting it ,but it just makes me laugh how wanky some people can be in their holier than thou attitudes in stuff that that,....I mean it affects you how???? get a life, who cares, its for the people doing it to live with not anyone else, so stop being so pompus!!! -------------------- The reason I love running is because it feels so good when I stop.

Well if they are offering it for free the price is right
The thing you would need to confirm is if there intention is to continue to offer it for free in subsequent years or is this a "trial". It maybe well worthwhile for Virgins (particularly those who can't train on the track) as well as provide a virtual experience for spectators which would increase the profile of the race and the Six Foot Track brand in general. Nothing wrong with having a chat with these guys to explore further exactly what they are offering. Cheers, 2P -------------------- Used to run to support my Six Foot habit

can I enter now with my qualification pending? I am EXCITED and don't want to have to wait! For people who are unsure whether they meet the criteria, they should send us a note via the "contact" page on the race website and discuss. Submitting an entry and have it go pending just creates more work, better to clarify beforehand then it will be straight thru processing. If anyone is excited, could you put the energy into qualifying ? -------------------- |

Kevin just wondering about this line on the online entry: Supporting evidence if never competed before: I propose to put "Canberra Marathon 2005 3:16:32". Can you give a hint if that is all I need to fill in or should I do a manual entry? -------------------- |

Just entered online, not a drama, I selected wrong sized t-shirt and went back through without a hitch. Bring it on!
