For those interested in solar cooking, this year's race in the Sahara Desert starts on 25 March.  The official site is here.  There are 9 Australians taking part, which looks to be something of a record.

Interestingly I have just got home from a fundraiser for a Sydney guy Giles (but listed for Great Britain) who is running who mentioned that he is a coolrunner. Sounds like a good guy and running for a good cause (the Delta Society).

Keep us posted Giles!

Well done Ellie, Giles is a good man. Not on the list of Aussies, as he is a mad pom who is living over here at the moment. He is a Rugby player who is fairly new to running, but he has prepared well and i predict a successful mission for him. If anyone wants to see the big man in action he'll be running a treadmill marathon at 12.00pm tomorrow - Saturday 10th March in the Kathmandu store at Bondi Westfields.

Ahhh, that explains why he was a no show at 6 foot yesturday.

I ran with Giles Newmarch on the GP2G a few weeks ago.

Best luck for the Sahara mate!

He said his treadmill marathon was pretty comfortable but he 'felt like a hamster'.

Looks like 9 aussies.  Plus Giles.  I got an email to say it was a killer hot stage 1 and that it was going to take a toll again.

Andrew Cohen was the first aussie over the line in the 29km stage 1. in 3h14m about an hour behind the winner, Mohammed Ahansel. If you know anyone there then email them through the site.

I remember when the emails came in last year.  They'd deliver them on paper and we'd all (eight of us) lie around in the heat under the hessian bag tent trying not to lose the paper i the sandstorm reading our stories out aloud from home. It was like something out of apocolypse now.  Very motivating and uplifting to get mail..

Fantastic effort by AndrewC to be 41st after day 3. Had the pleasure of running with him on a number of occasions (Adelaide, Jindabyne, Thredbo marathons).

I'm easily confused, but Giles appears to be in 102nd now. I heard he injured his knee on the 2nd stage, hoping he can hold it together.

Some horrible unfortunate news. On the official website it has been announced that a French runner has passed away after the 70km leg of the race. His medical file showed he had no risk factors, he had not seeked medical aid and was apparently in good spirits.

Very sad news. he finished the 70km stage quite comfortably. His tent mates found him unconscious the next morning. It happened during his sleep.

Best wishes to his family.

Best wishes to Bernard's family and friends - Something so sudden will take them a long time to accept.

The MDS is truelly a great event that tests you not only physically but mentally...It will be interesting to hear some of the stories of how absent minded these guys will be for the weeks post the event...

Well Done to all the competitors - especially the Aussies!

If anyone is considering this race for 2008 or 2009, you need to move fast.

Entries are taken by regional representatives, and for Australian citizens and residents that means we need to book through Jay Batchen at www.dreamchaserevents.com.  He's currently accepting pre-registrations on application with a non-refundable fee of US$100.  The fee will be credited against the full entry fee when the proper form is submitted later in the year.  Getting on to the pre-registration list is the only way to guarantee a spot.  Jay's allocation of places for the 2008 event will probably be filled by the end of this month (there may or may not be a waiting list) and the 2009 list may close shortly after.

As an indication of the event's popularity, the UK representatives advised they had already sold out their allocation of places for 2008 and 2009 before this year's race finished.

All the best

Dates have been released for 2008 - 28 March til 7 April.  Anyone even half considering this event should contact Jay Batchen at Dreamchasers as soon as possible.
