Being a belt and braces type, I'd like to back up the files/folders that hold all the history in Garmin Training Center AND in SportTrack.  For SportTrack I am guessing I just need to back-up the *.gpx files.   Not sure what files I need to back-up on Training Center.

Would much appreciate advise from any computer mavens out there.

I am using SyncBackSE as my backup program.

UPDATE:  per http://wiki.motionba..._center_history, training center files that contain history are *.hst or *.tcx.  Did a search and can't find any such files.  Still exploring.

Yes, for Sporttracks, go to Open Logbook.
This shows the location of your logbook .gpx file.
Save that somewhere else.

I haven't used TC for a long time

This topic doesn't seem to have generated much interest - so just for the record, Garmin replied to my inquiry as to where the history is hiding in training center... the Garmin info is pasted in below:

GARMIN REPLY:

The user data is saved as a binary data file (.bin )called Users. Users.bin will be created by version TC 3.2.3 upon start-up after a user has connected the device and placed in the directory C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\GARMIN\Training Center.  This is done automatically.

This directory (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data) may not be "visible" by default in Windows, but you will need to tweak the folder options to make hidden folders visible.  Let me know if you have any further questions.

Best Regards,

Garmin product support

Well, thank you! I've been wondering for quite a while were the data files for the Garmion Training Center are kept, and this is the answer!

you are welcome

- now it would be nice if the Garmin TC backups did not take over the computer for 10 minutes (or gave an options to just save latest entries).  I'll probably have to archive my present history and start a new one - to make it a more manageable size - or just forget TC and stick with SportTracks

Does anyone actually use TC??

Just save your .gpx files...much simpler, and you can export that to Google Earth etc , attach to emails ...

Hello Everyone,

I came across this thread while trying to recover after a computer crash, and I thought I'd share my experience in restoring my data in the hopes that it will help someone else.  As I'm sure you're aware, the only suggestion Garmin gives is to simply export the data.  Unfortunately, this is not very helpful when you've had an unexpected crash (and you're like me - so you didn't have backups.)

This how to/tutorial is aimed at Windows 7 though it may work for Vista as well.

Please note that I am a cyclist using a Garmin Edge205, but I suspect that this will work for you runners too, and since you helped me, I figured I'd return the favor :Talking Ear Off: <3

For the purposes of this tutorial, I will refer to my old hard disk as X: and my new hard disk as C:

Install Garmin Training Center
You'll probably want to install the same version of Traning Center that you were using before.  I try to stay current, but atleast they offer the previous version on the website as well.

Restoring The Data Store
It took me quite a while, and extensive searching to find the data store on Windows 7.  This is because Microsoft decided to revamp the recommended locations for application data, as well as personal data.

The Training Center data can be found in a directory called X:\ProgramData\GARMIN.  "ProgramData" is a hidden system folder, so you will need to either type the name in the address bar of explorer, or enable viewing of hidden/system files.

Once I located the data, I found the same folder on my new hard disk C:\ProgramData, and renamed the "GARMIN" folder to "GARMIN.new" (to rename: right click "GARMIN" -> rename), then I copied X:\ProgramData\GARMIN to C:\ProgramData and started Training Center to find my historical data intact.  I then immediately backed up my historical data buy using the export function as suggested by GARMIN  :D

Other Issues
I also got an error message stating something to the effect of "there was a problem receiving the activities".  I worked around this by creating a new bogus activity and sent it to my Garmin Edge205

I hope all this helps.  I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for a bit to see if anyone finds a problem in the procedure, or has any questions.
