Can I buy running shoes in Melbourne from a shop with a reasonable returns policy?
I went into 2 branches of Rebel Sport today and tried to buy a pair of Nike Pegasus. As I've not worn these particluar model of shoe before, I asked if I could return them if they were not the right fit. Both store's policy was that shoes could only be returned if wear had been restricted to walking indoors.
I was trying to buy running shoes, how can I tell if they are fit for purpose? I don't want to spend $160 only to find that the shoe causes me pain.

Hi Black Grape,
I'm not sure if it's too far for you to travel but you could try Active Feet. They have two stores listed on their site. I have heard lots of good things about them and know of a few people that have returned runners with no problems after finding out they aren't quite right

You could go to a fun run that the Nike shoe van goes to and trial a pair in a race for free.
The Devil Bend Half/10/5 used to have the van turn up and you could race in any of their range for free.
From memory the Corporate Cup used to have the van too.

I'd vote for Active Feet as well - I've bought quite a few pairs from the Heathmont store, and have 2 friends that have used the Pahran shop and been quite happy. If you buy according to their recommendations, you've got a month to return the shoes if they aren't suitable.
There is also Runners World in Kew (http://www.runnersworld.com.au/) - while I haven't bought runners from them, the couple of times I've gone they've been very helpful, and I'm pretty sure have a returns policy similar to Active Feet.

thanks for the recommendations. Active Feet got the sale and will be getting repeat sales. I'm really happy with their service and approach to sales.
