I'm new to running and I'm currently using department store bought shoes and was wondering where I should go to be properly checked for the kind of shoe I need. Do I need to head to Melbourne or is there a good option closer to home?

I dont know about down your way but I'd recommend Active Feet in Prahran. They'll put you on a treadmill and work out what sort of shoes will suit you and let you try as many shoes as you like on the treadmill until you get the right pair. The store is owned by a podiatrist I think and the fitters are 5th year podiatry students-mine were anyway. Very patient, very good and they got it right for me.

I find the athletes foot in Market Square is good.

I concur with the Wombat... Active Feet could be well worth the hour or so travel time. This would be especially worthwhile if you have an injury history, know little about shoes or if you have never been fitted up proffessionally.

Last year I was having all sorts of problems with ankles etc and went to Active feet and feel I'm in the right shoe now. You only have to go once then when your up for another pair you know what you need to get.
