It hasn't made the news sites yet but there are a couple of emails to the ACT RUN list that Kerryn McCann lost her battle with cancer this morning.

QUOTE Kerryn McCann dies after cancer battle JODIE MINUS 8/12/2008 10:05:00 AM Dual Commonwealth Games gold medalist Kerryn McCann has died after losing her second battle with cancer. The 41-year-old from Coledale passed away early this morning. McCann leaves behind her husband, Greg, and three children, Josie, 4, Benton, 10 and Cooper, 1. The champion marathon runner successfully fought her first health battle in 2007, after surgeons removed a cancerous tumour from her breast. She began chemotherapy in September that year and by May had thrown away her wig and resumed her rigorous jogging routine. ``There was a time I thought I would die, that I would never see my children grow up,'' she told the Mercury earlier this year. ``I am happy and relieved to be able to pull on a pair of running shoes again, but cancer changes your priorities.'' But four months ago, Mr McCann confirmed that his wife was again being treated by doctors, this time for a secondary cancer in her liver. Sadly it was a battle she did not win. McCann and Jane McGrath, wife of the Australian fast bowler Glenn, supported each other through their cancer battles. Mrs McGrath died in June. and also: http://www.smh.com.au/news/sport/kerryn-mc...8584698422.html and http://www.smh.com.au/interactive/2008/nat...cann/index.html This post has been edited by JoggerKev: Dec 8 2008, 09:41 AM -------------------- |

You fought a great fight Kerryn and we will all be inspired by your courage and fortitude. You took that steely determination you always showed on the track and gave it everything. At the end that is all we can do. We will all miss you and will remember |

Devastating news. It almost defies belief that only a couple of years ago she ran onto the MCG a national hero winning the Commonwealth marathon. We've all lost a wonderful runner and person, but I feel most sorry for her kids.

For all those that sometimes sit there and think it is all too hard to go out running, Kerryn was an inspiration and has inspired existign runners to train harder, but also new runners to take it up.
The final 3km at the Comm Games is why athletes push themselves so hard and the memory will remain with at least this runner who often uses that last lap to go that little bit harder. very sad news. -------------------- 2009 targets

I was lucky enough to meet Kerryn at the Noosa Half and she was as warm, friendly and approachable as everyone says she is.
This is just devastating news and as Dr JH said - my first thoughts were how on earth could this happen only two years after she ran into the G in triumph? My heart goes out to her family. Thanks for the memories Kerryn. PM -------------------- http://puntermattrunningblog.blogspot.com/

My silent inspiration, mentor and hero......a deep overwhelming wave of sadness now.
I will never forget the long 12 hour return bus trip and "sickie" from work to come to Melbourne just to see Kerryn run the finish of the Commonwealth Games. She made it so worthwhile by winning that Gold....and me leaving with a mild case of laryngitis. I have her pinned on my wall in front of the treadmill since, greeting me each morning at 4.30am to start my run...with the words "agony and ecstacy" written above her photo. Those words pretty much sum up the last 2 years of Kerryn's life, although I doubt the significance they could have ever imagined when first decided for that centrefold pinup. She has left us with some incredibly humbling memories and strength to strive to achieve our own bests, whatever that may be. Miss Gazelle. |

She leaves behind a legacy of wonderful memories and a loving family. Her Marathon win 2 years ago will stay in my mind forever as one of the greatest finishes I have ever seen. As Kevin said, Cancer is random and I lost my wife (and mother of 4 children) to cancer some years ago. Coincidentally at the same age (41) as Kerryn. Her family and friends will miss her deeply and all of Australia will mourn her passing. Never think that we are bullet proof and and that our loved ones will live forever. Show your love now! (don't just talk about it) You never know what tomorrow will bring. RIP Kerryn Cato -------------------- "Runs like a fat labrador and breathes like an obscene phone call"

This is such sad news, she was a great runner and was always very bright and smiling.
I will never forget when she ran in the NSW Road Relay Championships a few years ago and she ran the race on her own and she finished ahead of the other female teams.
