Just curious how quick some of the runners go in a 1 km time trial? I know Peter Snell still holds the NZ national record for 1 km with 2.16. I did one yesterday and got 3.06 but i'm pretty sure I can go faster, maybe on track.

My fastest 1km time is 3:18, as part of an interval session. I'm not quite that quick at the moment but am hoping to get back there to give it a shake.

Never tried a 1K time trial but going from my 1500m best I would think about 2:45

I was delighted with my 6 reps off a 90 second recovery last week (3:04/3:03/3:03/3:07/3:06/3:01) but to put that into perspective The Saint (Ben St Lawrence) up at the sharp end was doing sub 2:40's!

Isnt there a guy who ran a few fast 800 times, who holds the Aus 1km record somewhere around 2:16 or sumthing? can't remember the name though maybe ralph doubell?

Ralph Doubell won the 68 Mexico Olympic 800 in 1:44.3 and equalled Peter Snell's world record. Don't know what he did for 1K, although Snell's world record in 1965 was 2:16.7 so it could have been around 2:16

Wow, at 52 yo , and to think that people roll their eyes when I say I did alternate 3min/4min k's (total 10) at age 27.

My fastest km at the end of what was, until then, an easy 7km was 2:39.
The next day I entered the 800m on track (with road shoes) went through in 57 and died to 2:01, so I probably may have been able to do a 2:33 ish

About 3:30 in the late 90's, it was the 1st k in an 8k fun run and I was stuffed from it - made the mistake of heading out with the lead group as it was on a slight downhill.

Best way to do a 1 km P.B is put youself at the front at the City to Surf (Sydney to Bondi).

I believe my fastest 1,2 and 3km is in that event. I know not acertified course.

Track, about 3:05 running, 4:10 racewalking a long, long, long before I have this huge pillow for a belly.

Yeah, I reckon my fastest race km has been down William St a couple of years back. Saw some girl get splattered on the footpath and it prompted me to up the gearing.

Never done a 1k TT, and never raced track (since school), and my fastest rep in an interval session has been 3.14. Now that the question's been raised, I'd love to go out and just belt it for one single rep without the worry of having to drag your a#se back over a half dozen more. would be interesting ...

I have seen the above poster JR1500 go through 1km comfortably in 2.29 in a 1200m time trial at altitude. I did hear about a recent grass session involving The Saint, Blackout and Knoxy where they averaged 2.44 for 6x1km's with a fastest rep of 2.38. If you want to see a fast 1km go and watch any quality 1500m race, the A graders go through in anywhere from 2.24 to 2.30...it's impressive, and they make it look easy!!!

I thought it was Grant Kramer.....

Though on a good day I recon Benni could give that a shake, especially if Tiger paced him for the first 150.

In a 1500m race several years ago I went through 1k in about 2:38. Fastest 1k rep (on grass) was 2:42.
At the moment on grass I'd be doing well to break 3:10. Gotta get myself fit again, damn injuries...

On the road last week in windy coditions, I did 8x1kms with a 60 second recovery 3:24, 3:21, 3:18, 3:18, 3:17, 3:18, 3:15, and 3:12 I always find the first one is my slowest and the last one the quickest. I believe these are great for 10km racing!

According to aths australia the men's 1000m record is 2.16.61 run by Grant Cremer (NSW) in Stockholm on 1 Aug 2000. Ralph Doubell holds the 800m record at 1.44.40. The women's record is 2.38.8 run by Judy Pollock in Montreal 12 July 1976.

Absolutely.

And 10km racing being good for marathons, therefore good 1km reps = good marathons. :)

My fastest k of 3:05 was in the first k of a 3 k road race (so by no means an official measurement)
I don't tend to ever run 1k time trials, rarely run intervals and don't run on a track - so I am not the ideal candidate for a super quick 1k time.
Still, I'd like to run sub 3min some time. Just to say I've done it.

Maybe we should all meet at William St at C2S in Sydney in August.

Get Action prior to measure 1km mark and certify "course".

I am sure we would run really, really fast and over an acurate "course".

Might even live to tell the tale.

As for others above, haven't specifically tried to get a "best possible" 1k time. So, for now I'll go with the fastest 1k rep i could find in the diary - 3:42.

On a track in a 1km time trial I ran a 3.16 last year. I also did a 3.14 on a bike path 1km time trial, not sure of the accuracy of that one.
This year, if the markers were correct, the first km of the Puffing Billy race, down a very steep hill, I ran 3.05. The next km was a little slower (3.51), - there was an uphill in that one.

15 years ago I could run about 3.20 for a km. One night a mate, who could run 5 km in around 15 mins, decided he would try to get me under the magic 3 minute mark by pacing me in the pitch dark around a dead flat street circuit. Being dark, all I had to see or think about, was his feet in front of me and hanging onto them.

For him it was slower than his interval pace. For me? my eyes were bulging after 750 metres. I hung on but blew up badly with about 75metres to go, and went through in about 3.05. He was hardly puffing and I was yacking on my knees.

I'd never get near that time now.

Wow, there's some awesome times up there & some of those k rep times are excellent !

Only ever did a couple of 1k time trials (track), best of 2.42.....my god that hurt !

best track session of ks was a 5x1k session once in 2.52 - 2.54 range, on a 2 min rec. Looking back now through my diary to find these stats (from 97/98)......I'm certain it must have been someone else doing them ! I can in no way see any link between the runner I am now, to the person doing that training.

I think to make a 1km an official time it should be run over flat ground. I find I always run these distances much quicker on the track than on the road or grass. It is easier to judge when to sprint for home on the track.

I've never run a timed 1K. From my best 800, mile and 1500, I would have done around 2:45-2:50.
Now, I would be doing well to get near 3:30

It was but it was also a bit depressing as to how fit I was compared to an elite runner. Being a typical footballer, I thought runners were a bit soft! Not after that. :)

My fastest 1km was during a 3 x 1km Power session leading in to the Canberra Marathon. I ran 2:38, 2:35 then 2:33. On the last rep I outkicked Pat Carroll. After the 2:35 he told me that there was no way that I was going to run faster! Good motivation talk from Pat.

Currently I think I could do no better than one minute slower. 3:33. That is also my marathon PB pace. Oh how the mighty have fallen. :)

I am no where all your speeds : :) but my fastest km was at the beginning of a 6km fun run, I lined up about 10m behind the start line and had heaps of elite runners behind me. So when the gun went I had to go for it or get flattened. I did the first km in 4:18min. Fast for me, but heaps of room for improvement.....

Steve awesome 1km reps, My 13 y.o. goes through the 1st K in about 2.55-56 in his 1500, not too shabby with only a 15sec 100m. You have to keep working on speed once you hit your 20's its pretty hard to get it back, so Ive been told. CBs

Hi timrowe, are you more commonly known as 'Blackout'? I've heard alot about you and the rumours surrounding your pending burst onto the athletics scene. This is quite an impressive session, but you've got to admit 2.35 isn't exactly smokin'. Pretty impressed with the 400's, maybe you could open your season this weekend with a sub 4.10 mile. When do you plan on gracing us with your reputed prowess on the track?

when i was young and very fit I think I did 2.48 for a K in 1993...back in those days I racewalked a K in 3.53...

these days (i.e. the last 7 years) I have hit about 3.34 in 1k reps (running) for sure...I ran a 1500 in 5min flat at state champs 9/3/2003 and that equates to a 3.20 per km...see http://www.geocities...9/runtrack.html
I also ran some 800's in 2.23 about that time so although 200m short that is about 2.59 pace so i reckon around 3.10 might be possible for me these days...If I had a 4-8 weeks of intense (3-5 times a week minimum) track work behind me...lately I ve been getting to the track once every week or three if I'm lucky...

might have to get down the track and try and work on getting under 3.30 again just for the heck of it...maybe do 3.25 followed by 4.25 and then try do 3.50's or better for the rest of the reps...
hahaha

Not sure about the Prowess! haha i haven't raced track since 2002. Will be running my first race hopefully in the Syd track classic on the 12th of Jan in the 1500 if they give me a start?! If not then i spose the state 5km champs in late Jan? Was injured for 3 months so its good to finally be back at it!!

Very impressive turnout at the annual Timberell Park 1k "Hot Lap" Time Trial.

New PB for me at 3.22. However couldnt match it with the absolutely "smokin" Prof, who turned in a scintilating 3.18. PB by heaps!

Solid 3.04 from Fats. Same with "just cant seem to break 3min" Ross.

Action: Obviously keeping himself injury free for MDS. LukeSkyrunner just rolling around as well, me thinks.

I saw this thread last week so thought I'd go down to my local athletics track which is grass and see how I went as I haven't run a 1km TT in years. Ran 3:02 min. Felt ok running but once I stopped I thought my lungs were going to burst. I don't know how some guys can keep this pace up for 42.2km? I have an aim to break 3 mins now.

I hadn't read this thread before, and wasn't terribly interested due to never having done a straight 1 k TT. So when I received a personal invite to join the crowd this morning for the "Timbrell Hot Lap", i had to give it a go....and as spilt above, a 3.18 is the fastest I'm sure I've ever run.

I thinks it was chasing Langswm (not that we're competitive!) down the finishing chute that got me there! (he did have one of his eight hour lunches yesterday!) I knew one of two things was going to happen, either I'd beat him to the line, or throw up on him trying. Nearly did both! :)

Prof

PS - Nothing wrong with a 3.22 mate, fastest Ive seen you move too! Well done!

What was a "secret society" run. Now it is in the open. Would of been interesting to add that to Colin's Series.

BTW I have done thousands of kilometres there. In my youth that is one of the locations I did my race walking training.

Nope no secret society around here (well if there is it must be a secret!) In fact, I can vouch for Thursday mornings back to at least 2004

I thought about Cols Summer Series, but drinking beers at 7am does get a little tough....well on weekdays at least!

I'm looking forward to getting back into reps again. After Forster I can definitely do with some speed work!

I like to start a bit earlier though (so does Monte) as my regular day starts at 6:30.

Would you believe we got bored with the usual same old banter, so stopped posting??

How about I was just trying to prove that they were running the "Hot Lap", openly, three years ago??

Alright you got us...come along next week, just bring your viking hat and a goat, and don't tell anybody, ok?? Its a Secret!! :)

Well done Prof on the 3:18 1k mate. Should I first offer up the famous slag off line "no pressure". But, the last time I did some 1k reps in November I ran 3:19, 3:20,3:20. So "no pressure" but you are currently faster than me. :)
