After a successful run last year, the Northern Beaches Fat Ass is back. The date is a little earlier in the year i.e. a week after SMH & NF100 and 3 weeks before PMC.

Details can be found here.

Hope to see some of you there!

I love the landscape up the peninsula.  The 30km would be a worthy alternative to my normal Sat a.m. run.

It could depend on kids' sport, though.

I am definitely in - after New Years Day beyond the Black Stump I am ready for anything (ok almost anything....just the 30km option for me)

Hamburglar,

Any chance of an official 6am start?  I have more chance of achieving royal assent if I can arrive home an hour earlier.

I realise sunrise is 6:46am and so start photo would likely be crap-ola.  It would be good to be in the photo.

In any case, being a Fatass I think I (and hopefully bushbaybee if I can cajole) would be an early starter.

BB.

I'm keen as well. I've just been working out my racing calendar for the next few months and a local 60km drops very nicely into late May.

BasilBrush,

Closer to the day I will let majority rule on the preferred start time however at this stage I will keep it at 7am.

I agree that the start photo is important  :)

Remember it is a fat ass, so you can do what you want.

I'm very interested in doing this run.  It sounds fantastic, the timing is good (if I live through the 6 foot track and Canberra 50) and it will be my first time at the 60k distance.  I think an early start is sensible but the 7am start time allows the transportation challenged to catch public transport to the start.  I'll keep my eye on the thread.

Sadly, I'm an unlikely starter (despite my initial enthusiasm) due to uni commitments.  I feel sure bushbaybee wants to do it, though.

Hi I am definitely up for the 30kms - is there anyone out there interested in car sharing so we have a lift back to the start at the end? Did that make sense B) :D

I'm a tentative starter and it would only be for 30k, due to TNF100 the weekend before and SMC the day after  :D

Will decide closer to the day, sounds like a fantastic run though.

Hey, I'm from the US and I am just wondering if these Fat Ass races you have are the same here as in the USA.  No entry fee and all runners bring, food, snacks and drinks for everone to share?
Thanks, and happy trails!

Thanks for posting this one up, it looks like a magic way to start the day!
I have just been admiring the great photos taken last year!

I will be a tentative starter for 30km, as it is the weekend after my first 50km run at TNF 100.
I think the timing fits in well though, for keeping up the training for Gold Coast.

I think I could be interested in the 30k option here.  I need a 3hr run that weekend and it seems rude not to really, with it being so close to home... will decide nearer the time between this or Smiffo.

Hi, first time poster here.

I should be up for this one (30k only), will just depend on logistics, i.e., whether I can con some poor fool to help me get my car to palm beach and then get me to the start line on the day.

I've done a couple of half marathons in the past and have signed myself up for the Hunter Valley Marathon this year and am starting to doubt myself a little, so this should be a good confidence builder.  I've done all my long runs on my own, so I'm having a case of 'if no one was there to see me, how do I know if I really ran it?'  :)
Typical first timer marathon doubts I'm sure.
I would have been doing my weekly long run at this exact time anyway, so being a local I really should join in.

I am obvioulsy a Fatass newbie too.  I've read the info, what time should we be arriving (to sign away and take responsibility of our own welfare should we cark-it on the way) for a 7am start?

Cheers!

Hi Lakeside,
Unfortunately I won't be making it for this run - it's my older son's 3rd birthday on the day, and I've been told I have to help entertain a number of small children....think I'd rather run the 60k.
You should feel free to join the start of the run and turn around whenever you've had enough, ie you could do a 15k out and back, or run 30k out and catch a bus (eg. L90) back to somewhere near the start - that's the beauty of Fatass runs.
From my experience, make sure you turn up at the start line with enough time to warm up, introduce yourself to a few people and shake hands, and sign the waiver - 5 minutes should do it (just kidding)!
By the way I live near Narrabeen Lake and often train around there - feel free to PM me to catch up for the odd training run (as long as it's not too fast!).
Cheers.

Lakeside, there should be a few people doing the 30k, so maybe you can buddy up with someone to get back to the start. I am a 50/50 chance at this stage due to injury. If I don't run, I'll be happy to help out with lifts etc.

I'll be disappointed if I don't get to run this year as I was really wanting to break 6 hours.

Only 3 weeks to go now. Anyone else interested?

Tentative list as per above...

spaghetti legs (60k)
Paul Every (60K)
Brick ?
Bushbaybee (30k)
RunBare (30k)
ingrid (30k)
Plodbod (30k)
Lakeside (30k)

Thanks so much Chook.

Ahh another Narrabeen local!  Then I have a question for you if I may.

This is totally off topic for this thread, hope I don't get in trouble  :o , but I was wondering whether you know the aproximate distance of the bush track around Narrabeen Lakes starting at Jamieson Park through to where you pop out on the road in Wheeler Heights I think it is.  I've been using this section during my long runs but have absolutely no idea how far it is, and when you run it three times the error could be quite large.  I think I need to get one  of those Garmin thingamebobs I hear about.
Hubby isn't going to be too pleased with more running paraphernalia hanging round the place though  :)

Thanks Hamburglar,

I also liked Chook's idea of the L90 as it stops not far from my place, although fellow comuters may not appreciate a body with 30K's worth of sweat on it joining along for the ride.

Anyway I'll work something out so I should be good to go.

This sounds like a good run - put me down as a maybe at this stage for the 30K.  Just got to work out where I am that weekend first and if it fits with plans.  If I am able to do this, I will probably be a bit slow as I'm really just getting back out there again after an injury.

Anyone know how often the buses go from Palm beach back to Manly?  Also, wheres a good place to leave a car in Manly thats not restricted parking?

Hope to make this one and see you all there.

Go to Transport Info Line and search on L90. They go every 20 mins but itdoesn't go directly to Manly, so you need to change at Dee Why or Brookvale,

The options are either to park up the hill towards Nth Head or on the course at Queenscliff. If the second option is taken, you can walk to the start (about 1.5k) with warm clothes etc. On the way back you can drop of your gear back into your car. This is what Sportsman did last year.

Good question! This is part of my long run as well. It used to be pretty close to 2.5km, but since the War Vets Retirement Village began their new construction about 120 m has been shaved off the original track. It's therefore ~2.38km each way.
Running the other way, from Jamieson Park to the beginning of Bilarong Reserve is ~3km and then it's a further 1km until you get to Deep Creek.
Hope this is useful.
Cheers,
ChookLegs....

Thanks Hamburgler - the Queenscliff parking looks like a good option.

Also sounds like there could be quite a few of us on the bus back down - hope we aren't too sweaty for the other passengers! :)

Having read the course description, am v.v. scared of getting lost. Me and directions/maps just don't hit it off.  :)

Is there someone out there willing to run at my pace (6.30/km) who knows the course?  If not, I'll do Smithfield instead...

Sorry I will be a no show, having the TNF100 the weekend before I will need to be available to look after the children this weekend and the wife have a break.

Still sounds like a fun sociable run will do it one day Hamburglar promise.

Yeah I am gutted, but they don't run the module again this year and my course finishes so pretty much stuffed.
I will try and get out there though mate later in the day in the car cheering you on.

Count me for the 30km option, although not sure that "steep hills" and "sharp rises" are what I need for Gold Coast Marathon. Will be running with Koala 1, so another smelly person for the bus ride back to Manly.  :)

Look forward to it.

Pity this run isn't one week later  - its the Manly Food and Wine Fair. One of my favourite days and one of the few times I allow myself to be tipsy by lunch time! Of course I will go for a run first!

I may come along depending on whether I survive NF100

I have had a sore foot ever since Canberra - slowly getting better but probably not ready to run 60k on the road.

Maybe the 30k. I may even run it by myself later in the year and see if I can break 6 hours - we'll see how we go. I may play chief crew. for the day and give a few people a lift etc.

I'm a definite for this.  If anyone out there sees a slightly confused looking runner clutching a map that's gone all sweaty, that'll be me.   :o

Deferring to the infinite wisdom of my unofficial "coach" I will also be backing up and doing the 10km at Smiffo the next day  :)

If I can manage to get the train before 4 and the bus from Wynyard at 5.30 and the connection at Collaroy I might possibly be there in time

if not I might start further north like Collaroy and finish at Manly - or not - that's the beauty of fat ass isn't it.

or alternatively start at Palm Beach - or .......

but it will depend upon the weekend before anyway

but the 30k field looks extremely pulchritudinous - should be a great start photo

Well I can't help with the confusion other than to echo Paul Every's comment above  :) - but get yourself one of those nifty ziplock plastic bags. Perfect for keeping maps (and other stuff) sweat free.

My main problem appears to be getting to Manly by bus in time as the L90 doesn't start until after 7. The buses from Chatswood are the same which leaves a really slow Collaroy bus leaving Sydney about 5.30 and an iffy connection to get to the start by 7. The ferries start later as well on a Saturday.

Is anyone likely to be passing a railway station on the way to the start please who wouldn't mind picking up a sleepy looking hobo with a battered straw hat? And if so which station and what approximate time? I would be in the Penrith to North Shore line I suppose.

all the best David

I have had a sore foot ever since Canberra - slowly getting better but probably not ready to run 60k on the road.

I'm on the injured list, so I can help with crewing and lifts if I am free.

I'm firming up for this one, 99% there for the 30km option.  Should be fun!

What's the latest guest list?  Hamburglar is your foot feeling any better?  Can we talk you into doing the 30km??
