Spot, I could possibly have my arm twisted to come along for a few sessions...C&P is on my way home from work and a 6pm start would work well - having said that, would the stroke correction at the 'Bergs be better for a beginner? Not feeling overly confident at the moment though...

I can swim 1k non-stop but it's veeerrrrrrry slow (I often get over taken by breast strokers in the slow lane to give you a hint) - would it be advisable for me to get flippers? I reckon I've had some bad habits slip in (or settle in further) since I learnt to swim last year and discovered I could swim laps. I think I was so happy to swim 50m laps non-stop that I began to care less about my technique!

I could possibly benefit even more from the group cycles as I am as bike-phobic as they come (really only get out on the bike under sufferance)

Hi Beki (& other rookies),

we use flippers as an aid for helping adults learn to swim.
The biggest single mistake inefficient swimmers make is not breathing correctly.
It's all about blowing bubbles & doing so at the right time.
Kids squads is 90% stroke correction, adult fitness squads are 95%(+) fitness - hmmm!
I always tell people to do 1 stroke correction session per week (at least). This includes my star athletes!
Salt water pools like Bondi Icebergs, Boy Charlton & North Sydney are great for rookies as you float better!
25 metre pools are also better for stroke correction as you practice little bits properly. We split the pool into 2 x 25 lanes on Saturday stroke.

Just got back from a run along the coastal path and decided to have a peek over the side at the 'Bergs to check out the swim squad. Looks like you've got a nice group there, I reckon I might have to drag myself along in a couple of weeks. Sounds like the Saturday group would be a good one - I find 50m just a little too far for drills and that's one (another) reason I tend to slack off with them. Besides, anything that can stop my damn "windmill" arms has to be a good thing!

Being a local, I was under the impression that I needed to be a member to use the pool. Is that right?

Thanks for the pic Thomo - now I remember you Spot

Beki - you are typical of the runners we get inquiring (this is not bad).
As a pushy parent, I always tell people to do it now!
There is many things in the way of becoming a better swimmer - pool entry rules, windmills, slackers, 50 metre pools.....
Push through those barriers & I look forward to making you a swimmer!
BTW - I have a saying for runners that run 3 times a week or less - "The faster you swim the faster you run"!
Simply by adding 1 or 2 swims to your weekly schedule, you are now doing 4 - 5 sessions per week, rahter than 3 = improved fitness!
