Hi,is this a medically or self-diagnosed flu?A real flu will leave you feeling like death warmed up,the last thing on your mind would,or should,be running. You can damage your heart muscle if you return to hard running too soon after having flu.Just hang in there, forget racing or even easy exercise untill you are well recovered plus about a month.
I hope you get some professional medical advice to your question on this thread, mine is just the voice of personal experience.Get well soon.

Not even light exercise for a month? Hardly. 'Real' flu is very debilitating, but once you're over it, a few days off will do fine.

i think i may have overdiagnosed myself!!!
i am not experiening fever, headaches, stomach aches or muscular pain.
i, at the moment have a real sore throat im getting increasingly better as the days go buy. however i did try to get out for a run today but i got out of breath really fast, felt really congested and my legs were uncomfortably heavy!! how lang will this felling last?? i hate not feeling 100% and im stressing ill lose my fitness! im trying to keep up my fuel coz i no being sic takes enery to recover but will it really make much of a difference as i've lost my appetite.

Hi Flowgirl,
I have the beginnings of a sore throat and am meant to be doing my long run tomorrow, as am in training for half that is looming will attempt to run the distance but already have reservations. Also felt very out of breath with leaden legs and never really got into a rhythm etc on my last couple of runs. Don't have any advice but am feeling slightly sorry for self and know where you are coming from. Being sick sucks! hope you feel better soon x

Well tank girl, I can't speak to your circumstances, just to those of myself and my friends. If it took you 2 months to get over a 'flu-emulating' cold I would suggest that you've had some other problem.
I usually run through a cold ... and on those very rare occasions that I've had a 'real' flu, I've been back on the road in a few days.
That doesn't mean I think you should ... you should look after your body as you see fit.

If the flu - REST REST REST. Recovery will definately take longer if you keep running as well as putting your overall health in jeopardy. The flu will have you not wanting to get your head off the pillow. Also another thing i once saw. If whatever you have is above the chest then you may be ok to train (get medical advice first) but if its on the chest definately DO NOT run.
Remember there are always plenty of other races.

After hearing about Lisa Curry-Kenny and her heart problem and watching her on tele this evening, it makes you think twice about training when you have a bit of a cold or flu.
I had a bit of a tickle in my throat yesterday but still went for an 1hr20 run last night, feeling it in my head today and seeing Lisa's story, iv'e decided not to train tonight.
If what MissCoCo is saying about if it's above your chest you should be ok does that mean i'm just being a sook and was looking for an excuse not to do a speed session tonight?
But still when elite athletes have a scare like that it makes you step back and wonder.

Hi Mgilla, I didn't say that is should be ok if you have anything above the chest. What I did say was that it may be ok (get medical advice first). The flu itself though as I said will knock one out and there is no way you can get your head off the pillow. You don't sound too well so good call to rest now till you're over what you have.
