I'll try to make this as quick and as easy to understand as possible as i feel I've already been around the world twice!

Went to podiatrist and got orthotics.
Podiatrist recommended neutral shoes;
- Nike Air Pegasus
- Asics Nimbus / Cumulus
- Brooks Glycerine / Radius / Dyad

Tried all shoes on with orthotics and felt I rolled out on the shoe, except Brooks Dyad.
Run once in Dyads and was slapping the pavement like Za Za Gabor would a policeman.
Got rather annoyed so impulse-purchased Asics 1120's - cos they felt PERFECT!! (PS nearly beat my 5km PB in them on Monday).

Today, with Dyads returned to running store dude who noticed the 1120's were a 4E width (sorry, I'm still a running newbie and didn't realise to check the tongue) I have a store credit and I'm stuck trying to find a suitable pair of runners (they wont refund but will gladly exchange)

After some internet surfing I have discovered that not a lot of neutral shoes are available in the 4E width; a couple of other Asics and 1 Saucony were all I could find.
And I'm a tall guy with big wide feet (Size 12 - 4E) so it's a bit of an issue.

Does anyone else out there have this problem? If so, what shoes do you have?
Should I still be in a neutral shoe with my othotics?
Should I just find any shoe that feels right?

Any advice is greatly appeciated.
Cheers

Bugs

Since seeing the podiatrist I have always stuck to the shoes they have recommended. I felt it was ridiculous to spend almost $1000 on pos appointments/orthodics then do things my way! My rate of injury has decreased significantly over the past 2 years.

The Nike Vomero is a pretty wide neutral shoe... check the specs.

Also New Balance used to make different widths in all their shoes, not sure how they do these days.

While the shoes that were advised to you were all nuetral, they are very different. The dyad was by far the most stable, hence you didnt feel like you were rolling out. It is also on a straighter last which gives it that feeling as opposed to the curved or semi curved last of most nuetral shoes. The widest nuetral shoe at the moment would be a New Balance 1062 in a 2E width. The vomero has a slightly square toe box which can be helpful but is probably too narrow through the midfoot. The nike pegasus does come in a 4E. but the NB in 2E fits wider and deeper. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone - will check out your recommendations; in the meantime I'm back to see the podiatrist this week.

Have done another round of shoe-trying-on-with-orthotics. Seems the brooks glycerine feel ok when compared with the asics I currently have... will keep you posted as to what my second pair of schleppers will be.

Thanks again

I have wide forefoot high arch narrow heel and neutral gait - have a bunion on one foot and find the Nike Vomeros great. The Brooks Glycerine were OK in every respect except I had continuous bunion problem with them, so they're definitely more narrow in the forefoot than the Vomero. Hope this helps to feed into your complex equation.

And the winner is... Asics 2130 4E!!

Finally found a pair of shoes to suit. The 2130's are great - a step up from the 1130's, and below the Kayano.
Have already clocked some km's in them and they feel fantastic.

Talk about trial and error!
Thanks everyone for your tips - much appreciated.
