I appear to have lost two pairs of my running socks so decided to run in normal socks yesterday. So many blisters!

Does anyone know somewhere in central Sydney to buy proper running socks? I tried Rebel Sport and they didn't have them. I have run in Thorlos and Adidas' left and right socks and found them good. Any hints?

You should be able to find thorlos at athletic edge in randwick.

I picked up 6 pairs of thorlo lights for $70 on ebay... I believe that was inclusive of postage!
They are marked as "imperfect" but I have been unable to find this supposed imperfection!
Definitely worth a look considering they're $35 a pop in the shops! I went halves with someone as I'm sure 4 pairs is quite enough (the 1 pair I already have + 3 out of the 6 pairs purchased).

Of course this is not a short term solition to your sock problem!

From reading some of the other sock threads, I see that a lot of people have given the Target Coolmax socks the thumbs up. I want to try these or another cheaper sock to see if they work for me, before I consider splurging on any Thurlos.

I popped into the Brisbane CBD Target today and saw plenty of socks with the Coolmax marking on them, but couldn't figure out which ones you guys were talking about. I guess I expected them to not have any cotton in them (after reading something else here on this site), but all of them were either cotton or cotton blend of some sort. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

I find most coolmax socks to be ok-it really is a case of trial and error. The target ones I use are the ones that come in a pack of 3 with white/black, white/blue and white/red as colours. Recently I tried All Day Socks also with coolmax and they were good too. I think I got them from Target as well. Even coles coolmax sports socks are acceptable.
I find thorlos too thick, although I used to love mine when I was in heavier shoes.

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere....

Which socks give the greatest cushioning?
I have incredibly high arches, I also have a very 'heavy heel', and opposite to most people I roll outwards when I land.
Ive just got new orthotics, giving me extra cushioning, but apparently I need every bit I can get, being so heavy footed. Any suggestions?
Cheers

Thanks.

So cotton or cotton blend doesn't matter? It's more of a personal trial and error with socks? I just recall reading an article here (which I now can't find the link to) talking about how fully synthetic socks were best to minimise blisters.

in terms of buying socks from inner sydney - try athletes foot in centrepoint, upstairs near Pauls Warehouse. i saw Thorlos there a couple of weeks ago - i ended up getting 'lightfeet' brand which have specific right/left fitting socks but are much thinner than the thorlos.

or 3 sports on york street as suggested above.

Ratdog, I recently got the medium cushion ones, they were very expensive which in a way makes me think they have got to be excellent (in that panicked way we have to justify seemingly crazy $ outlays), otherwise I would be freaking out at spending so much on a single pair of socks. They feel great, I like them better than the coolmax, although still happy to wear cheaper socks if the thorlos are in the wash.

Frank, if you can bear splashing out almost forty bucks on ONE pair of socks, give these ones a go. I found on my last long run my feet were less fatiguiged than with the thinner socks. You might be able to find them cheaper somewhere else, the states, in a sale....I haven't seen any on ebay in oz. I just had to have them immediately I thought of it so no takeaway for the kids friday night :Nail Biting:

I've tried a few different brands but always come back to the Thorlos Coolmax mini crew or Wrightsock Double Layer Coolmesh. I've just purchased some from a site in the US which made it very economical.I always wash the Thorlos inside out as the washing cycle helps rejuvenate the cushioning.I've seen Thorlo Coolmax Womens running socks on a local Pedometer website for approx $23.00 a pair which is cheap compared to the normal $35.00.
If any one is interested I can let you know with an email if that is the appropriate protocol.

Cheers. Osprey :D

Hi AndyP,
Like you i read about the coolmax socks at target and headed into the Brisbane cbd store for a bit of a look. It's a bit overwhelming given the variety and choices. I found the tri colour socks that wombatoutofhell is talking about but there are a different type sold in packs of one and marked as "sports elite" (i think....it was a few weeks ago) behind the tri colours in the next row. I have tried them on a few long runs and they haven't given me any problems. I also recently invested in a pair of X socks at about $35 a pop and to be honest can't tell much difference in their feel to the target socks. One trick i like to use on long runs, especially as i have narrow feet, is to wear two pairs of socks. I find some of the coolmax socks can be a bit slippery on the sole of my shoe and if my foot moves around inside my shoe i will get blisters on the instep every time. To fill up any spare space in the shoe (so my foot can't move) i wear normal sports socks on top of the coolmax socks. It works a treat and has the added benefits of providing additional cushioning and sweat absorption.

cheers
Tetley

Yeah, I've got the target ones and I find them really comfy

Me too. One pair had a loose thread that I cut off. SUPER happy with them, and I have since bought more from the same seller.

I find it hard to get the sort of socks I like.... I want cushion-foot crew socks - the sort that come fairly well up over the ankles.... I can't bear the tidgy little things that get eaten by your shoes. I also like to wear the same sort of socks with my elastic-sided riding boots, and the short things disappear down inside. Grrr. I'm currently wearing some quite nice sports ones I found in the boys' dept at Kmart, but as someone suggested, I will go and check out The Athlete's Foot, to see if they have some of The Right Sort.

Most running books say avoid cotton - go synthetic or a high % of synthetic. I guess if cotton doesn't bother you, their cheaper.

I ended up grabbing some blend Coolmax socks from Best and Less from Brisbane CBD. Plenty of kilometres on them now, without any issues.
