Does anyone know somewhere in central Sydney to buy proper running socks? I tried Rebel Sport and they didn't have them. I have run in Thorlos and Adidas' left and right socks and found them good. Any hints?

You can find them at any athlete's foot...

They are marked as "imperfect" but I have been unable to find this supposed imperfection!
Definitely worth a look considering they're $35 a pop in the shops! I went halves with someone as I'm sure 4 pairs is quite enough (the 1 pair I already have + 3 out of the 6 pairs purchased).
Of course this is not a short term solition to your sock problem!

I popped into the Brisbane CBD Target today and saw plenty of socks with the Coolmax marking on them, but couldn't figure out which ones you guys were talking about. I guess I expected them to not have any cotton in them (after reading something else here on this site), but all of them were either cotton or cotton blend of some sort. Could someone please point me in the right direction?

I find thorlos too thick, although I used to love mine when I was in heavier shoes.

Which socks give the greatest cushioning?
I have incredibly high arches, I also have a very 'heavy heel', and opposite to most people I roll outwards when I land.
Ive just got new orthotics, giving me extra cushioning, but apparently I need every bit I can get, being so heavy footed. Any suggestions?

So cotton or cotton blend doesn't matter? It's more of a personal trial and error with socks? I just recall reading an article here (which I now can't find the link to) talking about how fully synthetic socks were best to minimise blisters.

Frank, if you can bear splashing out almost forty bucks on ONE pair of socks, give these ones a go. I found on my last long run my feet were less fatiguiged than with the thinner socks. You might be able to find them cheaper somewhere else, the states, in a sale....I haven't seen any on ebay in oz. I just had to have them immediately I thought of it so no takeaway for the kids friday night

If any one is interested I can let you know with an email if that is the appropriate protocol.

Like you i read about the coolmax socks at target and headed into the Brisbane cbd store for a bit of a look. It's a bit overwhelming given the variety and choices. I found the tri colour socks that wombatoutofhell is talking about but there are a different type sold in packs of one and marked as "sports elite" (i think....it was a few weeks ago) behind the tri colours in the next row. I have tried them on a few long runs and they haven't given me any problems. I also recently invested in a pair of X socks at about $35 a pop and to be honest can't tell much difference in their feel to the target socks. One trick i like to use on long runs, especially as i have narrow feet, is to wear two pairs of socks. I find some of the coolmax socks can be a bit slippery on the sole of my shoe and if my foot moves around inside my shoe i will get blisters on the instep every time. To fill up any spare space in the shoe (so my foot can't move) i wear normal sports socks on top of the coolmax socks. It works a treat and has the added benefits of providing additional cushioning and sweat absorption.
cheers

Me too. One pair had a loose thread that I cut off. SUPER happy with them, and I have since bought more from the same seller.

Most running books say avoid cotton - go synthetic or a high % of synthetic. I guess if cotton doesn't bother you, their cheaper.
