hi
i took a fall last week (tripped over a chain between two poles in the semi dark leading onto the path i was running and fell heaviliy onto gravel
6 stitches in my knee, then developed a secondary infection cellulitis..for which im on intravenous antibiotics and rest (they seemed to have finally kicked in and it appears to have stopped spreading and some of the redness is gone(thats a relief)
.the stitches however have a purple patch around them which they have said if it doesnt go pink will need to be cut out as it is dead skin so the stitches cant heal and wil just re-open which will mean they need to cut away this dead skin(theyre not sure how deep the dead skin goes)
..has anyone had this or know how long this recovery could take... ????? sitting around not doing anything is driving me absolutely NUTS

a very unhappy RJR i can tell you

Yuk, you poor thing! I'd take the medical advice if I were you, these things only get worse if you leave them.

Jane - all I know is Cellulits is nothing to be trifled with - don't take any chances.

I've only had one encounter with it and I've never been sicker in my life.

Long story short I contracted it after physio on my calf. (I had an alergy to the gel they used and it caused my hair folicles to become infected). Then somehow I picked up a staff infection. On my next visit the Physio made an immediate appt with a Dr (comprehensive sports clinic). Dr prescribed anti-biotics and said go home and gave me his mobile number to call if it got worse - knowing better I went back to work.

3.00pm I was driving back across the city when I felt overwhemingly sick and my leg felt like it was burning off. I managed to pull over and lifted my trouser leg - I nearly barfed when I saw how far it had spread and how red it was - called the quack - he got me to describe where I was, said "don't move" and called an ambulance

Got home 3 days later.

Apparently the skin being the largest organ in the human body cellulitis will just continueto spread if unchecked and will kill you - or at least that is the story the Dr's told me.

As for the stitches and dead skin thing I can't really comment - other than to say I'd do anything to avoid another bout of cellulitis - makes me wonder about the hygiene of whoever put the stitches in in the first instance?

Cheers, 2P

these infections are "just bad luck"you can have the best sterile technique and still get infections,it's not the drs fault, there are a lot of weird bugs around these days.

Especially since the injury wasn't obtained under the most hygienic of circumstances - I'd be more likely to blame that than the technique of the person who did the stitches.

Seriously though, Jane, I'm with everyone else in saying listen to your doctors. The skin around the knee is a tension area because of all the movement at the joint and you really don't want to risk things healing badly and wounds breaking down further by putting it under stress before it's ready.
