I've entered the full marathon - first one since 2003. I did the half last year and liked the course.. Aiming for sub 4.

I plan to enter the full at this stage. It was a fantastic race last year - so glad they took out the bloody big hill at the end.

Well done to for encouraging fund raising!

I'm in for the Half, rationale being that if I feel like doing the Full I can upgrade nearer the time.

Brave words!  You go girl!!

It very briefly crossed my mind to do the marathon at this one, but then I quickly came to my senses.  I'm in a pickle though, the 9km is a bit short, whilst the half course is so boring  ;)  Then again, the CR cheersquad at the Quay were magic last year and well worth the boring westlink part.  Decisions decisions...

What is the date?  I could look it up but I'm lazy.

We are heading over from the West.  Did Melbourne last year so its time to hit Sydney.  Glad to hear they have taken the hill out, although having lived over East and having done Sydney C2S many times surely it could not have been as Heartbreak Hill.
Anyway what I would also love is if anyone over there or past participants, can recomend a reasonable appartment not to far from the start.  Thanks

I'll wait till nearer the time to decide, early bird entries on till end of August. I've done the bridge run the last 2 years and really enjoyed it - can't remember it being so expensive though, $50 is a lot for a 9k run! More than likely will be the half.

It's a long way off but I'm planning to do the full one. I hear it's hilly though which doesn't thrill me, particularly having just done 'flat' Canberra. Hello? Flat? Er, I think not!

I will enter down the track closer to the date for the marathon. Have done so since 2000 mainly because of the buzz of the race and the city centre itself on race day. Thousands tune in and offer support. Be sure to enjoy those people who fall out onto the race course from dancing and drinking all night in the city. A must see sight!!! You will love the warm down walk from finish to recovery area and then to the circular quay station. Enjoy and see you out there.

They took the hills out didn't they?  The only real one left is the climb to Norton Street.

Outrageous! There was a mountain about the 34k mark if I remember correctly. At least I can take a good look at the course for Sydney before I'm actually on it. Not so sure that's a good thing. Sometimes ignorance is bliss  ;)

Sure is a slight incline  B) at about that distance as you go up the last bridge but it does go down on the other side.

Does it? I'm not sure I remember that part. Just the up, up, oh my god when will this end, up section! At least come September I'll be well prepared. Canberra was my first run off the oval (where I had been banished due to injury) so any incline felt enormous for my poor legs. The oval doesn't have too many hills, um, inclines you see. I think I have the answer though. You'd best run Sydney, finish and then come back to encourage (translation: yell at) me up the hills.

Not sure...maybe they haven't quite determined the start time yet, but they tend to send the half-marathoners off first so expect it to be early.  Last year it was the crack of sparrow fart, I remember opening the front door to leave the house and thinking 'holy shit it's dark!'  My brother reckons it's almost worth doing the marathon for the extra bit of sleep.

Entered in the half but motivated for my first full! In terms of difficulty how bad is the Blackmores full? I was told that it was VERY hilly by some but "sort of flat" by others.
Will see how I feel down the track just in case this new found motivation will dissolve come closer to september...

I just saw an ad for this in R4YL Magazine and am seriously contemplating coming over from Perth to do the HM (will have to miss the Freo half as its on the same day).
(I have a friend living in Caringbah and it would just be nice to go and do something and have something to aim for after C2S)

The things I wanted to ask are:
A. Is it a difficult course - hills etc? (I'm a slow runner and my first ever HM is coming up in June so this would only be my second!)
B. Is fundraising an entry requirement bce although I'm happy to donate money or whatnot I'm not the "harrass ppl for money" kind of person and already have charities that I regularly donate to.

The more I think about this the more it seems like a fab idea!

a) Not a difficult course, there is one reasonable hill on the way up to Norton St, but the 'killer' hills that the organisers had strategically placed at the end of the course have now been removed.

:( You don't have to fund raise - just pay the entry fee and you're away.  However, many people do take the opportunity to do so, and if you raise enough, this year they provide you with free entry.

Come and visit us - there's nothing like running over the Harbour bridge and finishing at the Opera House!

Hi Stellabella,

We are going to head over from Perth for this one too.  Last year we went to Melbourne and had a great time.  At the moment there are only 4 ladies going, I think 3 of us will do the full marathon but one will do the half.  I see you are planning to do Perth Half and most of us will be at that, so should catch up with you so you know who we are.  We have booked some flights, as they are not a bad price at the moment.
Hope to catch up with you at one of the Perth local races.
Keep up the running.

Edit... leave pretty much approved, friend happy to have me stay (and even be my cheer squad), checked out flights - I'm in!

Hey all, a little off topic (apologies).
Im going to use the Pat Carroll training guide from the website. Been testing it out over the past week and i have a question. On the XTraining / rest days what is an apropriate amount of x training? 1 hour? is that too much? too little? are weights appropriate?
cheers

I did a beginners triathlon program last year (for a 1500m/40km/10km event).  I found that 30-60 min swimming really helped me to recover / recharge from the running sessions.  On the other hand bike riding can leave you pretty tired for your next run if you do more than a moderate amount - but an hour's easy riding was fine.  I'm following one of PC's programs too so I was planning to do that level of cross-training.  But I'm a back-of-the-pack runner.

Hi CR's

To answer a few q's;

- StellaBella: the course is relatively flat for the half, there are two hills near Norton Street, otherwise I'd call the other rises inclines which should be relatively easy to manage. In terms of fundraising, it isn't mandatory, we do encourage it however. You can donate to one of the two major Charity Partners, which are Black Dog Institute and Osteoporosis Australia - you'll find this option when you enter online.

- Start times: will be very similar to last year, we are just running some numbers on increased entries across the board and how that effects both tail across Harbour Bridge and finish volumes. We'll be updating the website in the next week with final start times.

- Cross Training: it's very individual I think and really depends on how you are recovering from the load. I would think the advice you received from one of the other CR's sounds pretty good, 30min - 60min swimming is good (if you like swimming), you can pool run (which I find incredibly boring) or you can walk and do a stretching session - or something else (yoga, pilates, etc). It is meant to loosen you up and relax you mentally so find something which you'll enjoy as well as recover with.

Good luck with the training.

DId the half a couple of years ago and it's my favourite race. The finish is amazing at the Opera house. So tempted to do my first full marathon especially after a couple of strong halfs (or halves).

If you change your mind you can upgrade. I just changed events from the 9km bridge run to the Full Marathon, (when it starts to hurt, I am blaming Eagle, when I finish I'll thank him).  Go to http://www.sydneyrun...NLOADS/4706.pdf

Ok it's official... my flights are booked ($470 - ouch!) I'm coming to Sydney!

If others can make the sacrifice, maybe this can be my first FM (can't type the complete words...gets weak at knees)

Soooooooooo have been thinking today (off and on, not good to run appliances all the time) about maybe doing the bridge run.

Sooooo being very new to running, is it realistic to think if I can run 3km nonstop after 2 weeks of running that maybe if I increase my time from 23 mins per run this week to 26 next and add 3 minutes per week for the next 3 months, that I could do it?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

runningcat, in my personal opinion, you will find the C2S much hillier than the Blackmores Half. I don't find the blackmores half to be that hilly at all, except for one rise at about the 9 - 10km point

I have only ever walked c2s previously (I'm in sh2 this year) but I only remember 1 proper hill...heartbreak hill, which is really bad but it's only 1...and the race finishes at sea level so overall it must be more downhill. So I'd say the half would def be more challenging...but also more rewarding :-)
I wonder if I'll have the same opinion of the c2s hills after actually running it!?!?
Haven't registered yet but I'm planning on the blackmoores half - I could get carried away reading this thread and enter for the full...but that would be plain stupid!! (Me entering the FM, not entering it i general!)
