I am thinking of running this one and was trying to figure out what time to aim for. Last marathon was Canberra so i thought I could reuse my Canberra plan since it seemed to work quite well. Anyone not sure of their race plan yet please feel free to use mine.
QUOTE My race plan is to get to the line all excited and run with someone like Horrie then at the 10km mark realise that I am out of my league and start to suffer. Do a lot of discussions in my head that makes it sound ok to start dropping back and then finally I will let the 3:15 group slip away. This will leave me a bit shattered and I will try to hang on to someone by just slotting in behind them. This will be all good until the 30km mark i start to feel sick and realise that I have not drunk enough due to the fact that i have never grasped the art of drinking and running. I am also low on sugar cause I can never open those stupid gels up with sweaty hands. At 35km it will all come undone and I will have a walk. A few people will pass me and I will get cranky with myself and start a sad run walk to the finish trying really hard not to let the 3:45 group pass me. Hopefully if things go well I will finish in 3:30.

Lost a couple of weeks with a pulled back and then got the flu
but got a solid 35 in yest in wild conditions and up early this morning and got in a solid 19 k ,started off slow but did the last 5 at just under 5mpk pace so semi happy had planned to run with the 3 45 boys but will tuck into the 4 hr bus and see wat happens and treat it as a training run for melbourne where i want a good time looks like a few like me are going in a bit under done so best of luck to all -------------------- think u can or think u cant

for me underdone is an understatement! I'll be hoping for around 4 hours but with my lack of prep would be more than happy with 4:30 or so

Is anyone heading down from Brisbane the day before (or earlier I guess)? I'd like to get my own drink bottles out on the course, but I don't feel like a drive down to the Coast the day before just to deliver some water bottles and then again on race morning. If there was someone who could take stuff down for me, that would be fantastic

Question from an unseasoned marathoner: I ran a 3km time trial the other day in 12 mins 33. When I plug this into the race predictors/marathon signpost document you posted, it predicts a marathon time of 3 hours 33. My long runs have been: 27, 23 (race), 30, 34, 30, 28, and I've been doing 5 runs in total each week. (Top weekly mileage b/w 71 and 76km for 3 weeks.) My question is - how important is that 3 minute difference between 3 hours 30 and 3 hours 33? Will it make any difference if I just follow those splits that you've posted for a projected 3 hour 30 min finish? Or will that be "going out too fast" as everyone warns against? I'm feeling excited about GC - although experiencing lots of paranoia about phantom niggles and cold symptoms! -------------------- Pain is just weakness leaving your body.
Debut marathon done - GCM July 2008. Unfortunately on hold with running - a broken toe and pneumonia have been getting in the way. Back very soon I hope. |

I'm feeling excited about GC - although experiencing lots of paranoia about phantom niggles and cold symptoms! Race predictors are a "Rough Estimate", and put you in the Ball Park. You have been doing more miles than me, but I'm faster than you over the shorter distances. I guess your 23km race was at the GOR. What was your time there? With your GOR time, somebody might be able to tell us how it converts to a Marathon, but if you ran it somewhere around 5min/km, with the extra 2 months training, and the lessor degree of difficultly of the GCM course, you shold be OK. When I used to race more regularly, I knew that if I did a 25km race 4 to 5 weeks before a Marathon, I could actually split the 25km in the Marathon at the same time. -------------------- Digger's Comrades Page Click here Australian Marathon Dates? When I used to race more regularly, I knew that if I did a 25km race 4 to 5 weeks before a Marathon, I could actually split the 25km in the Marathon at the same time. My GOR time overall was 1 hour 54 (1 hour 45 for the actual half marathon distance), so pretty much spot on 5 min kilometres. So I'm hoping that, as you say, with the easier Gold Coast course, I'll be able to maintain that 5 minute pace for the whole 42. But being my first, I'm really not sure what's going to happen in the last 10! In a sadistic way, I'm looking forward to finding out! -------------------- Pain is just weakness leaving your body.

A bit of a breeze for the last 7km at 18km/h You will need to wait till Thursday for a reasonable report, but it is generally: 8º to 10º at 6AM 21º to 25º by 10-30AM And you always get some breeze(5km/hr to 15km/hr) after 8AM when the sun starts to climb, so its generally in your face on the run home. -------------------- Digger's Comrades Page Click here Australian Marathon Dates? I'm climbing the Storey Bridge at 3:20 while Mrs Wombat cruises the Brisbane shops safe in the knowledge that I am busy and can't stop her!

A little off topic but related to the weather, even with say 21 degrees will it be too hot to wear long skins if the sun is out? I know it is a personal choice but I have not ran with long skins on in weather hotter then about 18 degrees. Am thinking the extra support for my lower legs might be a good thing given the camber of the road over the first 20kms, last thing I want is a calf blow out.

Hi Peekie,
My personal opinion would be it's too hot for skins. Even when I've been running in 5 degrees in ski areas, I find they are too hot after I've warmed up. You could maybe test it out though, going for a jog at midday and see how you go, I saw some people running in skins last year, they were the minority though. I would suggest shorts and then skins for post race! |

So far
1 Coolrunner doing the 2.5km 2 Coolrunners doing the 4km 15 Coolrunners doing the 10km 31 Coolrunners doing the 1/2 76 Coolrunners doing the full and a cheersquad of 19 (although many of them are running as well) allowing for the 7 I could see that are running and cheering that makes a coolrunning takeover of the gold coast of 137 coolrunners (including family members listed) big party! -------------------- Seduced by the Dark Side

Quick note - Elise and I will be making a guest appearance on Sunday. Best of luck to all running on Sunday, although it's not really about luck.

Hellooooo!!!!
Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong spot, this is the first title that caught my eye about the GCM Wow things have been so hectic that I haven't had time to stop by and say that I have entered, booked flights and will be up on the Gold Coast Friday..! Mikey (another coolrunner who doesn't have much time lately to post either and is also my other half) will also be running as well. We have entered the Half but really have not had nowhere near enough running preparation as we would like. We came off a huge cycling event at the end of April and have had such limited time to get back into the swing of running but we successfully went out and did an 14k last night and it was nowhere near as hard as we thought it was going to be so our cycling fitness has definitely helped in a huge way. We are staying at Crystal Bay Resort and from reading a post a few months ago a lot of coolrunners will be staying there too Better check out some other related posts so I can catchup on what has been happening..!! If I don't get much time to drop back in then good luck to my fellow coolrunners and I hope you have a great day.. I look foward to catching up with you all and exchanging stories... -------------------- 2009 Goals so far..

Got home too late from work and missed the 'last last minute online entries'. I'll have to enter when I get up there. Nothing like leaving it to the last minute

Best of luck to everyone running on Sunday. Unfortunately I won't be a part of the cheersquad on Sunday (it would have been my 4th year in a row!). Still, my thoughts will be with you all on Sunday morning. Happy running

Just added myself to the HM list, hoping for something just under 2 hours. Plan to stick with the 1:50 pacer for as long as possible.
I'm planning to drive down from Beenleigh on Sunday morning, and will be picking up my race pack down there. Does anybody have any recommendations on where to park, and what time I should get down there by? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Is there a planned location for the cheer squad? This will be my first, so very excited and looking forward to it. Cheers, Mike |
