I have the half pencilled in. If I run the Sydney marathon will probably not run C2S, as that will be a 32km week, with just 3 weeks to go. I remember though last year as I was running down the City Beach hill to finish. , there were guys running back up the hill to run back into town Very disheartening. Maybe I could do that.

So you did the 12km last year and there were guys running to town?  I remember that ha ha.. I was very slow last year as I took it easy after an injury - 69 min, plenty of guys would have been running back from memory.

I did the half last year. Running back into town after doing the half makes for around a 32km run. Wasn't happy I was feeling like crap, and these guys looked great running back.

I'm planning on doing the 12k and can't wait as will be my first City to Surf, hope it doesn't rain like last year.

I did the half last year, I thought it was a really nice run and loved the route through Kings Park.

I will say that post race was a nightmare, my clothing got lost and didn't get to the finish for about 2 hours.  I had to be taken home by relatives dangerously cold!

So I would strongly advise making other arrangements with your clothing, especially if its wet again.

I won't be running again this year though, I'll do the Perth half and Freo half instead

I'm dead keen to be in for one of the two this year (which one is yet to be determined...). Kind of excited about it!

Yeah?  Coming to Perth to do it??? Awesome

Hopefully no rain this year.. made going quite tough up the hills last year!

I'm looking forward to it immensely.  I just read your bloggy thing, sounds like you are going through what I am.. silly niggle/injury that calms down with running, but is still "there" frustrating huh!

You'll need to change your times now.. well done on this morning!

Yes, i'm still going running, but I was hungry and figured I should probably eat before attempting the run.  (even though I ate before going to the WC this morning!!)

Yep - any excuse to come home to visit the fam! should really update the blog as it is suggesting that I am a year younger than I am and has not been updated to read that I am trying to run the NY marathon 2008!

It was horrid weather last year - as Vurt will attest. Nonetheless I shall try and drag him back for more...

Had always moaned about the C2S here in comparison to Sydney's C2S until last year when they brought the half into it.  I also loved the route around Kings Park, and most people were runners which meant you did not have to dodge people after about a couple of km's either.  Free food at Bankwest tent and got my clothes quicker than ever and got to use toilets before they were too disgusting as well.... so hopefully I will do the half again, I am also planning on running Sydney marathon so will see how things go.
Apparently in 2009 there will also be a marathon included in this event, which will be fantastic for Perth I think.

Last years is the first time I've run in it - I ran uncompetitively before racing for about a year and a half.. so I being my first actual race I have a biased view :-)

One aspect to the HM is as you mentioned more runners - not people running around in darth vader outfits to dodge - and Kings Park is a nice area to run in.

What time did you run in the HM?  I think not getting your bag quick after the 12km gives you incentive to run quicker or just not bring a bag at all. :-)

Aha!  You're a perthie in hiding then! :-)  What took you over to sydney?  Did you go for their C2S and just forget to come back?

I'm an ex-soccer player, so running in the rain was nothing new to me - but the winds were a bit deathly going up those hills early on especially trying to pick my way through the walkers and Group D'ers.  (I needed to goto the toilet so in lining up I blew the start!)

Did you come last year?  If so which event did you do?

I ran it for the first time last year, and really enjoyed the experience of running with so many people. I didn't care about dodging others, that's all part of it and anyway, more people means more overtaking opportunities :-)
But yeah the rain was yuck and the bag handling was atrocious. I might do the HM if I'm fit enough, but I've really got to pull my socks up with distance training.

Hey man - I was actually just thinking 'hmm wonder where 20thCB is hiding' ears must have been burning.

Dodging for me was rubbish as per starting in the last 3rd of the walkers due to missing start - so I'll concur on that one.

I can't rem who said it, but they kinda warned off doing the C2S HM as its quite tricky if you are starting out?  I ran the Perth HM course today and gosh that was hard enough and thats meant to be flat and fast (easy)?? No way ha ha.  I now know what he meant, so I'm going for 12km as that is what I set myself to do, destroy my PB from last year.  (the word destroy just sounds so authoritive doesn't it!!)

Not in hiding - I'm loud and proud :) I work in Sydney - after a year of drinking to excess (having a ball) I decided to start running. I love coming back to Perth and trying out the running for the first time though!

I was in Perth with Vurt who ran the half. I was newly fractured in my spine at that time last year so was on crutches cheering at the finish line. Looked like fun though! Can't wait to give it a bash myself. This year!

The last couple of KMs of the half last year were very very tough. Looking forward to having another crack at the half this year and hoping for some better weather.

Maybe we can have a little get together after the race?

I'll be there, but definitely not doing the bag drop thing this year, that was a debarkle.

I got the shits and just left mine there. Hope someone made good use of my old stained pink jumper, water bottle, piece of banana bread and $5.

Its a great race though, good fun, nice course and amazing to see so many runners in Perth. Its tops.

I bet they were, doing 9km in kings park THEN tackling more inclines... he he.

The get together sounds good, I'll even have a beer then.  NOt drinking a THING until after C2S.

Always up for get togethers... but do we get to change first or descend on a venue in sweat stained, possibly rained on, potentially stinking glory!?!? Esp if it appears we're going to lose our bags anyway!!!  :)

tough course but I enjoyed the Half last year so some possibility I may do it again......
I caught up with a few non WA CR's after the Melbourne Marathon last year just went straight to outdoor section of a pub on the marathon course was fine like that, but some may want to go home, shower, then drive all the way back to some venue later in the evening...(not for me though...)

I'll be in for the 12km too!

Managed to pull off a respectable 1:16 for a 14km run around the bridges on Saturday (Burswood to Windan to Narrows back to Burswood) without too much arch trouble, so 12km should be a doddle.

i've never run the C2S before but i def plan to do it this year.

Still debating on whether i should do the 12km or go for the HM straight away. a mate of mine is signing up for the HM and is asking me to do it as it is the only one that will be a 'challenge' but i think the 12km is plenty challenging considering the furthest i've ever run is 10km >.<

i also hear that the C2S has a few nasty hills! true?

Jason.

Yeah the first km has the nice hill to kings park up st georges tce, but there are some others along the way.  I'll be doing the 12km rather than the HM - its still the premier event I believe.

Yeah i think the atmosphere is better for the 12km theres not many chances you get in Perth to run with so many people ! However some people dont really like the big crowds, but i think thats what makes the event so great !

yeah i've seen photos of ppl doing the 12km and the amount of ppl participating blew me away!

as its my first C2S this year too i think it would be a good idea to soak up the atmosphere and have a good time instead of trying to kill myself with a HM that i'm probably not ready for >.<

Just dont get stuck behind the walkers at the start otherwise you will be dodging them for the first few kms ! I've had to do that the last few years, i think i have got pretty good it though :)

i think it might be better for me to be in with the walkers at first as i'm still a newbie..that and the most number of people i've ever run with before is about 20-30 other guys in my PE class back in high school which is about 7-8 years ago >.<

Its pretty hard to escape the walkers they're everywhere !!! They even manage to get to the front of the crowd somehow. I was suprised to see how many walkers there were starting in the B group  :)

sorry but could you explain this 'group' thing to me? how do you get grouped? how many groups are there? do you just enter into the group based on how long you think it will take you to finish?

Well you have the runners and the walkers. The runners are divided into A, B, C, D depending on expected finishing time. eg. under 48min is A, 48-58 is B, 58-70 is C and over 70 is D. Each group will have a differenct race bib colour. You are supposed to line up according to the group your in. With the higher groups going towards the front and walkers at the back.

that makes sense... wait a minute... if its based on time then why on earth are there walkers lining up in group B?? >.<

judging from the times in your example, i'd line up in group C and i don't consider myself a walker!

The problem is it's an honour system and people either ignore their bib category altogether or enter in the wrong category to start with.  I think to enter in category A you have to have proof of time from a previous race but other than that you just put yourself wherever you want.

The walkers can certainly be annoying.  I don't mind if they're out there just to have fun and a natter but they could have the decency to start behind those of us who are taking it slightly more seriously.

I put myself in C last year, and passed plenty of Bs, even though I finished in 1:12!
It's such a great event though, worth it just to run up the Terrace, look back and see a swarm of thousands behind you (or ahead of you, you know what I mean!).

Yeah, I noticed that too, I ran a leisurely 69 min last year and I passed a swarm of B's too.. I even saw a bunch of B's walking.. I reckon to start in A or B you need to prove a 10k time similar to what the boundaries suggest.. the C's, D's and pink bibs would be able to work themselves out where they need to be at.

I'm in!
I don't get to do many races but I have this one booked in. I will make the decision over HM/12ks closer to the event, I'm tempted to do the HM but it will be my first!!
My previous best for the 12km was about 1:15:?? so I am a definite group D starter!!
Count me in for the post race get together :)

I think I ran 1.45 and the following week I did the Perth half something I have never done before but all my friends were doing it so did not want to be left out and ran 1.43..... Had a really good year running last year, and so far so good this year. Have just completed my very first half ironman in Busselton, cannot believe I actually feel stronger as I get older.

But going back to C2S, if you ever get the opportunity go to Sydney and do theirs and you will understand why Perth can be a little disappointing. Sydney has about 60,000 people in it, and people can only get into the sections that they have been allocated, you have to earn your spot but it works very well. The baggage situation is also brilliant, and for some strange reason also the day is always warm.  But having said all that last year which was my 3rd time of entering the Perth C2S and doing the half I thought it was great and believe the organisers are certainly getting better, but clearly that was not the case for everyone.  Be brave enter the half.

Folks, rego's are open online http://citytosurf.activ.asn.au.  It appears Cathy Freeman is running.  Wonder if she's any good at distance....

When you register for the 12km event you will be asked to select your start category. There are four start groups plus the walk. The start categories are in place to ensure that competitive runners are placed at the front of the field and those taking a more leisurely pace are further back. Start Category break downs are shown below. Times shown are anticipated finish times accross the 12km distance.

Start Group A – Under 48 Minutes

Start Group B – 48-58 Minutes

Start Group C – 58-70 Minutes

Start Group D – Over 70 minutes
