Yep, if the shoes get a drenching, perhaps give them a proper hand-wash just to get out any mud or other crap they may have also picked up. Then remove inner soles (or orthotics) to dry separately. Lie these flat somewhere, and don't peg them up on the line. The little indentations created by the peg can be annoying for your first run back on them.
Then yes, stuff the shoes with newspaper and leave them somewhere dry to ... well, dry. You won't need to put them near a heater. Full sun is best, but even out of thsun will work OK. The newspaper will simply absorb the moisture out of the shoes' fabric. You may in fact find you need to replace the stuffed newspaper a couple of times before the shoes are totally dry.

In the sun (or in front a normal fan - not a heater - when I'm desperate). Usually alternate to a spare pair of joggers while the others dry in their own good time.

I rotate three pairs of shoes, and they live on the balcony where they catch the morning sun. If they're completely soaked, and the fire's on, in front of that is where they go.

I don't get the newspaper and usually the local paper goes from my letterbox to the bin w/out being read and I'm not going to start stockpiling for a (literally) rainy day!

Sure it would - but it sounds like a very expensive option! You would only need one newspaper stockpiled for a rainy day!!

Newspaper has the added benefit that the carbon in the newsprint will absorb the odours.
(So my wife tells me. And she is yet to be wrong.)
