Registrations have opened for the World Masters Games to be held in Sydney from the 10th - 18th Oct. 2009.

I'll be competing in the Men 60-64 category in the 10k road race on Sunday 11th, the 5000m track race on Tuesday 13th, and the half marathon on Sunday 18th.

Hope to see lots of Crs there

My age group as well. I thought I might do a few track events as well including the steeplechase ;)

That's out of my league but certainly not crazy. Go for it

I have been toying with the idea of doing this as well - 10k road race and half marathon - my category being Women 60-64 - but I have a few questions: - is there a fee for each event entered and how much is it?
- will they publish the courses for these events?

Have been a bit reluctant to register so far ahead in case of injuries but maybe I should do it to keep my motivation!

Cheers ;)

I am sure that information will come - it is still a more than a year to go. It is a great opportunity to participate in an event that should have a wonderful atmosphere with a buzz being created by international visitors. All in the backyard of Sydney residents. ;)

According to their web site :

"If you register as a competitor before 31 July 2008 you can take advantage of our Early Bird Offer of 15% off the Games Competitor Registration Fee of AUD220.

Your Games registration fee includes:

Entry into one Sydney 2009 World Masters Games sport competition
A Sydney 2009 World Masters Games accreditation pass and sports bag
Free transport on Sydney’s extensive network of trains*, buses and ferries
An allocated seat at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Opening Ceremony
Entry into the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Closing Ceremony and other events
Access to the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games social hubs located across the city
Entry into the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games Health and Lifestyle Expo
A souvenir-style Sydney 2009 World Masters Games commemorative program
A discount booklet for use at selected Sydney restaurants and tourist attractions
Access to sports injury services at Sydney 2009 World Masters Games venues
A certificate of competitor participation in the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games
A program for each Sydney 2009 World Masters Games sports competition entered"

Not very good value if you only compete in the 100m ;) . Even a bit unreasonable for the distance events.

You also have to pay for each individual event I think.Does seem a lot of money if you are a local but if you are travelling and paying accommodation I guess it puts it in perspective.Hopefully we will get lots of i/s and o/s competitors to make it truly a World Masters event. It can be a great experience if you have never entered one before, hope it is well supported. ;)
See yah! there.

Eagle, you might want to take advantage of trial ANSW membership when there is a steeplechase event on the summer program. As normally the water jump is covered over or not filled up due to safety.

IMHO the waterjump is the hardest part of the event. I use to do the occasion 2k steeple in the late 70's ealy 80's at interclub. I can tell where most of the "in know" punters liked to watch the event, yep, near the water jump. ;)

Don't quote me but I thought I interpreted it that you only pay for events if you enter more than 5 and then it becomes $5.50 per event but I will have to re-read it to make sure on this.
I'll be 40 next year and this type of thing is something I have always wanted to do. I love athletics, running etc but only competed in athletics events until I was 20. It was fun back then & I think I will try & re-live my youth & go for some sprint events & the long jump as well as the 10km & 1/2 Marathon, which are more my scene now.
I think however the finals of the 100m times are quite good so I will need some serious training. Just to let others know, you can go & look at the results from the Melboure & Edmonton games in 05 & 02 to guage the level of competition.

I've tried to put in an expression of interest but haven't had the promised email with login details to register yet - anyone else had success with this lately?

OK, I've now bitten the proverbial and registered for:

5km track (eek!)
10km road
8km xcountry
half-mara

And for the record, no additional payment required, so I just did the 187 earlybird. I will take a week's holiday and soak up the atmosphere, so think the 187 is OK when you consider that as well as competing in my events I get to watch all the crazy steeplechasers fall into the water :)

Seriously though there should be some excellent competition to enjoy.

I'm trying to decide...400/800/1500m or 800/1500/5000m. Maybe XC instead of 5000m. I'll be in the 35+ women's. Doing pan pacs at the gold coast beginning of november to get some bigger meet practice in.

Sook, if they have a steeplechase enter that one as well. You might come home with one surprise medal!

A medal or an injury!
I wouldn't do the steeple unless you get some practice first. Those landings can be pretty tough on the body.

Should be a great event, I know of a couple of people who are making an extra effort to get fit and ready.

With the event in our backyard we should all try and be involved.

Thanks Running Angel.

I did it in 64 mins and I was hoping for 60mins. There's always next time. I'm not super worried about times I just happy to be out there and able to run although any improvement is good. I did my best on the day and that's all I can do.

Congrats on your 5min PB over the 10.5k. I hope you are feeling all better now.
