I have developed shin splints on one leg only (is that normal?). It is the lower part of the front of the leg on the inside area.
I ice it after I run but I wondered if application of deep heat later that day might be beneficial?

When I've got shin splints in the past they have been fairly minor and usually the result of increasing km's too quickly, however I have been consistent with my km's for the past couple of months. I don't run more than three or four times a week and total not more than 35km per week.

I'm just wondering if I should take the rest of the week off running (although I still want to do my long run on Saturday), or maybe I should take the next whole week off running?

Not really.

Just like every other part of my body that creaks and groans. Mainly knee issues (both knees) caused by weak glutes. So could be related to that.

sports masseuse told me shin splints are usually caused by tight calf muscles.

I used to get shin splints in 1 leg only and have been told it's not abnormal, so that's a good thing. The pod showed me that one foot lacked flexibility in the big toe so long story short, after a while, I learnt how to move it correctly and fixed it.

Perhaps one of your glutes is weaker than the other? You favour one foot? One knee is dodgier than the other? One foot is larger than the other? There must be something different happening in that one leg.

Sunset are you sure you have shin spints ?

If that it what you have had diagnosed then take the week off, Do the exercises prescibed and try running again next week.

I only ever get shin splints when running on hard surfaces with shoes past their use-by date.
