I've developed shin splints in one leg. My last long run was last Saturday and then I ran a short course on Tuesday and haven't run since. It has been developing for a few weeks but only became particularly nasty quite suddenly.

I think I will have to skip my long run this weekend, and possibly not run all of next week either, which means I will probably only do a fairly short 'long run' next Saturday (one week out from GCHM).

Is this lack of running going to be detrimental to my performance on the day?

Will cycling aggravate the shin splints? There is only so much swimming that one person can do in winter... :Nail Biting:

Thanks for your help.

If you've been dedicated in your training til now then it won't make much of a difference at all.
That you've got shin splints kinda points that you have been dedicated.

Easing up/Tapering now might even produce better results on the day!

Hi

Ive just been diagnosed with the same, running the full GC marathon (hopefully)
Went to a physio that i dont normally use who massaged it to the point of bruising and now it hurts to walk on it.

Isnt shin splints a broad term for anything around that area so could mean anything?

Very worried and am going to another physio tonight who actually knows what he is doing and will
maybe diagnose it better

I think if youve put all the hard work in you should be okay to rest for a few days

With cycling id say you'll know if it hurts or not?

That sucks sunset! Make sure you ice your leg morning and night, it will take out any inflamation. Don't stress about your fitness, you will be fine come race day.

acupuncture would be worth a try to help improve the shin splints, also microcurrent therapy would be good and there are a few practitioners in Brisbane you can call Metagenics on 1800777648 to find out where someone is near you, from memory there is a guy in Paddington who my wife went to and he does both therapies.

Sorry to hear it. Regardless of what happens in the next two weeks, there will be another half, another doomben, another noosa, list goes on and on. But good luck with this one :Nail Biting:

Currently iced up...

I'm sort of getting pangs of pain even when I'm sitting completely still ... :Nail Biting:

How'd the trip to the physio go?

physio said that they aren't too bad and certainly aren't the worst case he has seen. He did some release work on my calves (aka: felt like he attacked them with a meat cleaver) and suggested a try an easy 3 - 4km jog tomorrow, then 48 hours if all feels good, maybe a 5 - 7km jog, etc.

Still, I think I may be out for the half at GC :Nail Biting:

Hey Sunset, I was wondering which physio you went to in Brisbane? I'm trying to find a good physio for my shin splints.

Good luck to you.

I've had eight weeks out with shin splints, and have just started walk / running with new orthotics this week after seeing the podiatrist. During the time off, I much say I wasnt too motivated but on the weekends I did do some deep water running for 75+ min which although boring is good for a frustrated runner. This may help you with fitness or may just help you get out of the house.

Best wishes for race day

I started getting shin splints when I first started speed work. They were fine when I kept a constant pace but they didn't like it when I changed pace constantly. Luckily after a few weeks they'd eased up and don't bother me any more now.
