Unless we have a high level performing Aussie in High School / College in USA we aren't going to have any 1600mts or 3200mtrs performances to compare.
Burn out in US is something that has to be considered.
Allan Webb is the current High School 1 mile record holder at 3:59.51 who is current US Open mile record holder.

Thomo, that time from Webb was for 1600 metres, not a mile. US high schoolers race over 1600 and 3200 metres. Fernandez has run 4:00.29 for 1600 metres. There's a great video of that race here. He leads the race all the way and runs basically 60-flat for each lap. He also just misses running into a wayward pole-vault pole. It's interesting that Fernandez broke the California Interscholastic Federation state 1600m record formerly held by marathoner Ryan Hall (4:02.62).
He's an exciting runner, that's for sure!

You answered the conundrum in your post before the last one.
If as you said, the mile is 1609m (or more accurately 1609.34) then his last lap would have started at 2818.7m (7:31.83) and with a consistent pace until 3218.7m he would have passed 3000m in exactly 8:00.11 , or 0.4sec slower than recorded.
cheers

CBs, Gregson had the advantage of being in a competitive race. Fernandez just time-trialed away from a field of high-schoolers (on a windy day). He was behind record schedule at 1 mile, realised this and accelerated, recording a very impressive negative split.
From looking at the two videos, he hasn't demonstrated a huge kick. He just runs away from the field, Prefontaine-style. His future (at world level) would appear to be at distances of 5000m and longer.

german set their national record in the 3k en route at 7:59.83 see here photo, and as wombatface said, he front ran the race. i'll give credit to gregson for how fast he has run, but when he ran his 8:01 he was hanging on the back of me, roffy and benny (before kicking past me the little s**t haha). german also came 25th at WXC i think too.

Does anyone know if German will be at the world Juniors in a couple of weeks? That way we will be able to see how he performs in a race situation, looks like he is able to do ok when setting the pace, but what will he be like against a whole field of talented runners?

haha, touche. if i tried slowing him up, he would have came 4th..... though then he would probably end up with 3rd anyway, after my DQ'ing.
i doubt he will be going to world juniors because he did not compete at the USATF Junior Nationals. He ran at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, basically the equivalent (though on a-whole-nother level) of australian all schools. someone in the US was real smart and put the two championships on the same weekend in two different states.

There is no doubt he is very good, my question was to do with how he would do against others, Ryan has run at world youth and finished top 5.

... and so was everyone outside of Africa
Unless we know how either of them raced there, the comparison isn't really useful...i.e. did he go with front runners, then get spat out vs Gregson sitting on even pace or vice versa etc.

You can't beat head to head racing and comparing track times, or times on the same road courses, to see who is best. German and Ryan are sure to race a fair bit over the next few years but at present it is german 1 gregson 0. I reckon the 2mile v 3km times they posted were too close to call and being differnet distances, you can only pick a victor here subjectively, as Jeff did.
Re the Africans, you will find that plenty of young American and Aussie runners will be kicking their butts in the next decade. They just have to believe in themselves.
