I was just reading the online stores thread and thought I would check out what shoes are currently available with athleticedgeonline.com.au and they have a SALE on Asics shoes.

30% off Asics until July 14, postage only $5.

I have bought from here before and all is good!

Lou

Just goes to show how we get ripped off in Oz.

Whilst this is a good discount, if you take the Nimbus for example, they are selling the version 9 I believe. I recently bought the Nimbus 10 (to be released in Oz this month) online from the US and paid $27 less (postage and all) than they are selling a superceded model in Oz

Certainly tempting prices, thanks for posting that Loubee.

I've never done what you did Walshy2 but are certainly interested. Can you PM me with the name of the shop in the US you used?

Can you believe, I was in Rebel Sport the other day and the had a pair of Nimbus 8 on display...wait for it..the price was $219.

Absolutely outrageous.

There are thousands of memebrs on this forum. I am wondering if it is time we did something about this bullshit.

I agree Colsy, would be good to know why our shoes are so expensive and why we can get them express shipped from the US with $30 -$40 postage and still get them much cheaper.

I am sure it is not the merchants ripping us off (I hope), perhaps the way we tax imports??, but then why can we get them sent from a US merchant so cheaply??

Maybe a petition to Mr Rudd that as well as a Petrol Commissioner we need a Shoe Commissioner

Thanks Walshy2, there certainly is a huge difference in cost even when postage is considered. I would be interested to see a breakdown in where the money spent on buying a pair of shoes locally actually goes. Is it taxes? Is it ASICS? I don't understand why things are so expensive locally. Sure a small percentage is understandable, but this is a huge proportion.

PsychoChicken, I almost didnt post as I didn't want to come across as a smart alec, I told you so kind of guy. You did get a good deal by Oz standards.
My frustration really is why we have to pay so much here.
I only became aware of the savings that can be made online via US, when a mate pointed it out to me

this is of particular interest since my preferred US supplier no longer ships Asics to Australia.

I am contemplating setting up a US PO Box (mail forwarding company) but that requires a bit of expense.

When the dollar is down against the US$ they don't up the price so they reason they don't need to lower when the dollar is up - evens out. FWIW the US is cheaper for all clothes & shoes not just sports shoes, my friend picked up a pair of designer jeans in the US for $85 and saw them in DJ's for over $400! :D

Other than buying online I'm not sure what can be done, I appreciate Asics trying to protect their market but how much money are they really losing with a handful of people buying from os. Freedom of speech freedom of shopping I say!

That said I have bought a pair of Brooks Glycerin at atheltic edge for only $65 and they had Nike Pegasus for only $65 recently but not my size, you just have to keep an eye out.

Think I might pen a letter to Asics and ask the simple question about why they stop the US stores from shipping interstate.

International?

From what I remember when this first blew up in early 2006 with a US retailer being bullied with the threat of losing his ASICS account, it is because the ASICS businesses in various markets are separate businesses (ie ASICS Oceania vs ASICS America) and they have an agreement not to compete with each other.

Several people made inquiries and/or complaints to ASICS about the issue and never got a satisfactory response as far as I'm aware. In many cases (including mine) buying from overseas was because ASICS Australia stopped stocking a particular model of shoe.

After the discussion on this site in 2006 Brooks made the same threat to the same retailer.

I can't be bothered looking but recall reading somewhere in the "buying shoes online from the us thread" is a "service" you can subscribe to that will for a fee (5% i think) as a US "drop box.

Thanks Colsy

I advised Dangerous in my note that I thought that this was the mob people were referring to.

Is this recent as they shipped me a pair of Nimbus 10's a few weeks back

walshy

regardless I'm sure there are heaps of other places who will do it?

Yeah mate, sad but true. I sent an email asking if it were true and:

"Thank you for contacting us. We do ship to Australia; however, some items cannot be shipped internationally. We cannot ship Asics or Polar internationally."

That is quite a bit of income for a store to lose, do the sums...its gotta be hurting the store.
