Gday all

Today whilst running i was impaired with a blow out on the left hand aglet. I have never experienced this phenomenon before and I was flabergasted with how it was effecting my pace. How do you guys deal with such disasters during a run? Has it ever happened to you in a race?

I stumbled home and reviewed all shoes for signs of deteriation and fatigue in the Aglet. I made a remarkable discovery that all my left hand Aglets were slightly more worn than the right hand side.

Has anyone got a periodic routine to check your Aglets before racing or at a regular interval?

Does anyone know of a new product which will prevent this disaster from happening again?

Where can i get my Aglets repaired?

Below is the Aglet which caused so much grief

OMG Ratdog! I hope no innocent bystanders were hurt in the blow-out!

As you are aspiring to be an Ironman, I have two words for you - elastic laces.

They're agletless.

Its only now after the adrenaline has gone from my body that i have been able to take stock of the whole incident and realise how darn lucky i was not to lose an ankle or foot in the incident.

Slowmo thanks for the great link.

Ratdog I have just done a quick survey.

The results are that 50% of people asked knew what an aglet was.
And 50% didn't.

Is this a word you have resurrected from your kiwi heritage? Next you will be saying "the aglet in my jandals...." :)

During my recent adventures at Hardrock one of my friends blew out his kevlar aglet on one of his solomon trail shoes. Of course these are supposed to be blowout proof. This was serious about 60miles in. Fortunately he had a spare pair of old shoes in a drop bag but it could have been a disaster. Never underestimate the importance of sound aglets, even the supposedly indestructible kind. :)

In the spirit of avoiding any possibility of aglet blowout, and subsequent injuries to myself or others, I ran san-aglets today. Also left the laces, eyelets and shoes behind as well, just to be 100% safe.

You can never be too careful :) Thanks for the timely reminder ratdog!

Jeepers - I was feeling pretty smug but just realized that the boot-laces I use with my cheap-as-chips huaraches have aglets and they're probably the cheap, dangerous ones too :D

No people, you have all gone mad.....

How could the end of your shoelace coming off affect anything about your run?

A "blowout" ? How can that be? What does it affect? This is a conspiracy. Pretty soon there will be all sorts swarming over this thread giving their advice, making it sound like a "real" problem.

I know this is a hoax.....isn't it? :D :)

In the past 30 years I haven't heard an aglet mentioned by name until last week when it cropped up as an answer in the Sydney Morning Herald crossword. I was quite relieved to discover an item of obscure knowledge had come in use beyond tormenting kids when playing "I Spy".

And now, a whole thread on aglets. :)

I hope you reported it Ratdog.

I dont know what the rules are in NSW but in SA all blown aglets have to be reported. Used to have to go to the Cop Shop to do it but like everything else it has now been farmed out. You can do it at the Post Office or online.

Never heard of it.

Remember how trucks sometimes blow tires on the freeway and the next car comes along, hits the blown tyre and veers wildly to the right and runs into the guard rail or oncoming traffic. Don't think you are safe from blown aglets just by refusing to be a truck.

I didn't realise just how concerned i was about all this until i read the thread! Got me wondering, I sustained an ankle injury playing basketball a couple of weeks ago. Maybe, just maybe...........

I am surprised this has only now just come out...
but I can confirm from very close sources that 2 recent high profile withdrawals from the Olympic team are wishing they had taken more notice of these ugly little bits of running (& walking...no more hints though) attire!!!
Be careful out there...

A blown aglet on a gaiter in a trail race can be a disaster.

Small sticks can be your lifesaver though, poking the offending end back in its fastening loop.

It would be a DNF for sure if it happened during the Marathon des Sables in the desert.

My aglets are cactus also, but I don't worry about it. My laces are elastic and I just tie them off in a good strong knot.

JoggerKev,

im not 100% sure but i thought i heard rumblings in one of teh threads about replacing your shoes every 5000 kms or so. Maybe the Blown Aglets are the least of your worries.

Keep up the knot tying practice.

I lost an ABC quiz not knowing what an aglet was (I guessed a small harvester... )... t'is a great word!

At an MdS veteran, I can confirm you are on the money. One lives and dies by their (correctly configured) aglets in the Sahara... However, I would suggest that full size ags are better in these extreme circumstances :)
