I'm away at the moment and have a session of 6 x 400m coming up. I'm wondering if this could be replaced by 6 x 200m hill runs as I have found a pretty good hill to run? WOuld I still do only 6 or should I add extra's?

I have Perth C2S coming up in a few weeks which has a few hills to run so I thought this could be good training leading into the race or am I comprimising my speed training?

This will be week 3 of Hal's Half marathon training. Any help appreciated.

Lou :)

My hill sessions are normally shorter. e.g. 10 - 15 x 30 second efforts with a jog back down to the bottom. They certainly do the trick. Remember hills are supposed to build strength while intervals build economy of form and speed.

As stated I find Intervals and Hills work on different area's. (But i'm no expert on the matter)

I basically do sprint work up hills with a jog back down as my recovery whereas my intervals are at race pace.

Why do 6? Why not 5, or 7?

You should do them until you're tired.

Hi Loubee,

in addition to the different muscles being exercised on the flat and hills, my basic understanding is that the shorter distance of 200 metre intervals doesn't give you the same benefit for raising your lactate threshold as longer distances. Nevertheless, 200m reps would be better than a slow jog or cocktails at the local bar.

Thanks for your replies, we came home early so I can do the speed intervals as per the program. :p

I will keep adding hills into my shorter runs for strength building and preparation for C2S and stay with the speed intervals. I will also add some hills repeats into the program and run them until I am tired.

I don't follow, Loubee. You can measure off 400m and run intervals anywhere in the world ... why did you need to come home to do it?
