From the SMH this morning:

"Mottram yesterday drew a tough heat. At 10.55pm Sydney time he will race world record-holder and 10,000m gold medallist Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia), world champion Bernard Lagat (US), Thomas Longosiwa (Kenya) and former Kenyan James Kwalia (Qatar) in the third of three heats.

The personal bests this season of Bekele, Kwalia and Monder Rizki of Belgium are all faster than Mottram's, and Bekele, Kwalia and Longosiwa all have faster career personal bests."
If they run according to that form, Mottram should still make the final, as the top four from each heat, plus the next three fastest, qualify.

Best of luck to him

Hopefully Bekele ran his legs out doing the 10,000m. Mottram just needs to make sure he runs his race plan and doesn't get caught up in any of the jostling. Good luck Buster!

I don't think thats a bad heat, lagat is not running well at all and i think will struggle to make the final, and with first 4 goin through he should cruise through. hopefully

Not sure about that loubee. The schedule says the rounds start at 10:15 pm EST. The quote above says 10:55 pm SYD time.

The 10km was 4 days ago and was a slow pace with a fast last km...shouldn't have taken it out of him.

Lagat should still be a threat, he ran a tactically bad 1500 not bad form.

However, if tonight is a tactical battle between favourites it will be a slow pace and Mottram may miss out. He musn't repeat Osaka and has to force the pace early so that even outside top 4 , he still goes through.

I thnink that Buster is in heat 3, so that explains teh time of his race - last heat.

Tacticaly - he will know the times from other heats, so should pace properly.

I think it is the prefect heat to run in. While it is the first 4 that go through it maybe good to have seen what happens in the first 2 before he runs this one So time is not that important but the place in the heat. Good luck Buster and I know you will give it all you have.

I think if Lagat was in form he would have been able to overcome 'bad tactics'. Likewise last year Mottram's form was more of a factor than his tactics.

State of shock.
Mottram out.

ABC radio commentators kept saying it was the fastest heat and that Mottram was fine even if finished seventh.  5th and run out as first heat had next 3 fastest qualifiers.

The final just won't be the same. The 5k final was the race I was most looking forward to.

Unreal. Having the luxury of knowing they only hard to run 13:37 and then falling to sleep for the 3rd and 4th km.

I was watching live through Bahamas live streaming at http://www.dabahamianting.com/ .  CH7 coverage is terrible.

Mottram took surged with about 800 to go I think, but didn't hold onto Bekele and Lagat when they went past.  Its a pity, it just confuses me that so many of the runners are letting the tactics dictate their time so much.  Especially if you are in the last heat, you know what time you need to make in order to make the final.  Why wouldn't you run your own race to beat the time to get into the final?  It seems slow by Mottram's standards, but maybe the conditions are more depressing than is apparent.

I'd like to take this time to sincerely thank Channel 7 for their fantastic planning of coverage, it has been top notch as usual... *eyeroll*

I know can switch over to Ch10 and watch House without having to worry.

Sincerely

You've missed nothing Lou... they havent actually shown us... we've had to watch the softballers lose (and before I get lambasted I am aware they got Bronze), we're watching the Boomers get massacred, we've watch an aussie come last in an 800m heat so why can't they show us Buster!?

Buster is still an absolute hero to me, but the overconfidence of saying he didn't even think about times because he thought  he'd finish in the top four is really disappointing.
So very disappointing

I hate watching delayed events, but at least Ch 7 showed the whole race without an ad.

Mottram! Apart from running a spinters race, running an extra 50m by sitting wide, and NOT knowing what time he needed, ran a great race.

Agree with foxen. I think the 5000m runners should forget their tactics and run for a time.
Mottram ran 50+ secs from his pb, which is huge. He should be able to do 4 x 5000m reps in the qualifying time.

However, on that run he had no chance of doing much in the final, so he is not in his best form.

Disappointing!

And a school athlete's mistake of not ensuring fast enough race!

2 Kenyans (1 from Qatar), the WR holder and World Champ should have been enough indication he may be outside top 4.

Lets have this argument about form and tactics again DrJH :)

Lagat wins a 'tactical' race. Mottram loses due to tactics yet again.

Couple of curious , almost silly, comments from him post race. Not what one expects from a fully prepared professional.

"No, I didn't know the 13:42 cut off... I was running to get in top 4"

"Don't know who that was that went 600m out"

Well, if he wanted top 4 he should have nullified the sprint factor, if not then take note of the 13:42 cut-off and force a fast pace. He obviously also believed like others here that Lagat was out of form and just concentrated on beating Lagat to ensure a top 4.
In a slow pace he was unlikely to beat those guys in the last km.

Well he shouldn't have been reading CR

It was a bit like watching that 200m sprinter afterwards who was convinced he'd won silver and celebrated for 5 minutes straight before someone finally gathered the nerve to tell him that he was disqualified. He didn't quite seem to realise that was it:( Normally such a good media man too.

Kept on thinking to myself "and this is where he pulls in front...."

Pretty slack if you ask me.  5000 is a big step up from 1500.  Ironically, Steve Ovette found out shortly before he retired.

Mottram's obviously class but just not that classy.

IM WITH YOU TAFF..

Surely you  would want to know what you had to run time wise even taking away whether you finish in the first 4 or not......it would be like playing the last at the masters 2 in front not knowing how many in front taking a driver and making 6!

class is permenant ...form is temporary!

Have to agree, disappointing decision/strategy and outcome at this level (as a coach of a junior you would be dark on them doing the same thing in a state champs heat if they were a medal chance in the final) - there were quality runners in the heat and they all had the benefit of knowing how fast they had to run to get in as one of three fastest losers.

Several guys should have first made sure they would run sub 13:37 and then play the tactic games after that. 7 runners should always have got to the final from the 3rd heat - just crazy that only first 4 went through. Going slow was a gamble that cost all athletes in the 3rd heat a bonus chance of making an Olympic Final. Just very disappointing to not see Buster in the Final - it will not be the same race now without him. Collis in Heat 1 was running blind in comparison.

Some good points made above, note that 4 of the fastest non automatics in the 800m came in the 8th and final heat. I doubt very much, that someone who has dedicated the entire last 4 years to chasing 5,000m gold didn't know every possible detail about his competitors and the exact time required to ensure progression to the next round. Even jockeys at bush picnic races do the form before each race. I'd say he knew exactly what he needed to do, and either screwed up, or wasn't capable for some reason.

Mottram is a better 1500/miler than 2 of the blokes ahead of him, but similar 5k form. A slow race with a kick should have suited him, so I think he was right in just aiming for the top 4. Whatever the reason he didn't have it. As he said, on that form he wasn't going to make an impact in the final anyway.

Bideaus camp have not achieved much this olympics, Benita was the first indication.

So I would not take it too much on Buster, the reasons seems to be deeper.

But from the point of smart thinking,
Tamsyn ceratinly outsmarted Buster in forcing the pace to qualify on fast time.

Smart run could have him qualified, but on the form probably would be dissapointing in the final anyway.

Buster needs to take clue from Sally, find his little aths coach and beg him/her to coach him again.

For the final - lets hope somebody will push the pace under 13 min.

as for CH7 - I went to bed 7:30 last night

edit : Earlyriser - You beat me to it.

Get over it you blokes.A crap run from Mottram. He is a good runner, not a great one in current terms. His ignorance/ arrogance is outstanding if he really did not know the time he had to run to qualify. What a dope.
