I run and race in New Balance 1062's, rotating several pairs. Anyone have a clue what kind of lightweight shoe would suit a foot that wears the NB 1062? I wear orthotics so just looking for a lighter shoe to mix it up a bit. I normally wear men's because in HK women's shoes don't come in big sizes!! Thanks!

I wear neutrals and currently running in Brooks Glycerin, Nike Pegasus and Addidas Supernova (these are very new and not run in yet). The supernovas definitely feel the lightest followed by Pegasus then Glycerin. The Glycerin feel faster and I wear these for tempo's, intervals and long runs.

Edited to add that I have just checked the weights and the Supernova is the heaviest so go figure!

Assuming the 1062 is similar to the 1060 I'd recommend giving the Asics DS Trainer a try. A couple of years ago I did rotate a pair of DS Trainers and a pair of 1060s and both fitted me fine - although after a while I found the 1060s to bit too heavy for my liking.

Love my Brooks Glycerins and the Asics Gel Nimbus 10's are pretty good too.

None of the shoes that have been mentioned (except the DS Trainer which is not neutral) are actually classified as lightweight trainers. The 1062, Nimbus and Glycerin are the heaviest and most cushioned neutral shoes in the range of each brand.

In the New Balance range a lightweight neutral trainer would be the 826. In Mizuno it would be the Precision; in ASICS the Speedstar; Saucony the Fastwitch; Nike the Lunar Trainer, and Adidas the Adizero CS (which is the lightest shoe of those I’ve mentioned).

Thanks, I have trouble with Asics because I have wide feet but will check out the NB and Mizuno I think.

The Loco Caramba could be worth a try.

I need neutral running shoes and also love running in lightweight shoes - I've been using Mizuno Wave Mustang. Enjoy the feel of them. I've also had Mizuno Wave Precisions and Mizuno Wave Creations. The Wave Mustang is certainly lighter!

I have converted to lightweight trainers and have flat, wide feet. Nevertheless, I have been very happy with rotating NB902's, Asics Gel Speedstar 3, Mizuno Wave Precision 8 and Brooks Racer ST2. I would agree that the Mizuno and Asics are the most neutral, though the support in the Brooks and 902 is fairly minimal.

Hi Phibes. I know your an ultra-man :) and so wonder how far you have been in the Speedstars (and how they performed etc.). As I've been running more and my body is strengthening I'm finding I need less and less support and cushioning. I'd like to get into a pair of Speedstars and see how they go, but I'd want them to handle a 100k or further race (flat bitumen or track). Your advice?

i'm hestitant to comment here but I have a pair of Speedstars which i like and would recommend.. having said that, I have never run 100k (and i pray to god i never will :) ).. i can see that you'd be in a bit of a quandry with shoes for ultras.. the lighter the better and more of a factor for the longer the distance, but the longer the distance the more you may need that cushioning/support etc..

what do you race in now Justin??

Depends on the race, but Asics Nimbus, Brooks Cascadia and Puma Complete Tenos IV. They all start to feel heavy after a while :)

Hi J

I can't give you an answer yet as I only got them 2 weeks ago and haven't done anything long in them yet. I'm taking the NB902's, Speedstars, Mizunos and Brooks ST2's to Caboolture 48h and may rotate a bit but I have only done long stuff (eg Coast to Kosci) in the Brooks ST2's. With the ST2 I took a gamble at C2K as I hadn't been longer than 45K in them but the 100g less per shoe than my Asics 1100's and trail shoes made things feel much easier and I was lighter on my feet. I am still wearing the same pair for trail runs and have clocked well over 1000K on them- they're like my favourite slippers. Also, some of these shoes (particularly the Brooks) are lower profile (not huge heel elevation) so you get better leverage from your foot/Achilles complex and they are also well suited to walking in ultras. The only thing potentially limiting them in long ultras is obviously general fit (width especially) and wearing through the very light fine mesh at potential pressure points such as big or little toe areas. The light mesh also allows more dust in during trail events. The models I have chosen have fairly straight lasts- some of the other flats have too curved a last for me.

cheers

Phibes

Hi Ned

I went from the NB1061's to the NB903's which feel much lighter and faster. I just bought the new NB800's and find these to feel heavier and a bit clunkier and would not recommend them so for me it will be back to the 903's
