Here are some 'what ifs' to start discussion:

* Where could Mottram have finished in the final if he'd been in it given the fast pace in the last mile and it being a completely different race to the heat?

* Would he have finished better than Lagat?

* Could Hackett have won the 1500 if he'd gone earlier instead of sitting on the other athletes?

* The obvious: how fast could Bolt have done the 100 without easing down to celebrate?

* Should Troopy have stayed in the lead group early in the marathon with the fast pace rather than drift back early and have to run his own race?

I am only alowed to talk about these 2, so :

Bolt - his speed was analyzed along teh 100m, and it was calculated that if He was able to hold his top speed for the last 30 metres the time would be 9.60

so obviously he did not slow much even with his arms movements all over the place.

Hacket - from some inbetween the lines commentary, it looks that Hacket has recovery problems and that he suffers from the need to swimm fast heat
the 1-2 days before the final, on the day of the final tehre was nothing more left in him, than what he delivered.
I am questioning his commercial tactics of drinking galons of blue chamicals between the heat and teh final, that would kill elephant...

If Buster had made the final I think he would have dropped off the pace 4 laps out. Hard to know where he'd finish though.

Bolt would've run 9.60. Give him a 1.8 tailwind in the 200 and he runs 19.20 :)

Grant might have been a little flat after his heat so maybe didn't quite have the capacity to go for it. Here's a question, who would have won the 1500 freestyle if the appropriate drug violation sanctions were implemented. Yes, by rights the Tunisian should have been serving a suspension

Dare I comment on Troopy B)  I think if he had stayed back with the Baldini/Sell group -15.40 at 5k - he may have run a better race. Brian Sell and Troopy are a similar standard. Sell held back and ran fairly evenly to reach 1/2 way about = with Troopy. Troopy had led him by a good margin at 5,10,15k. After that Sell steadily pulled away. Sell's legs gave out at 35k but he salvaged a 2.16/22d place. That's about where I would have thought Troopy would have finished. Of course such a comment is pretty unAustralian of me :D

What if, Buster got rid of that coach of his? Honest, who advises any athlete before a major event not to race the distance they are going to race in at least once? Buster's team let him down. If he made the final he would have got blown away in the last few laps. Why? Because he was not race fit!

IMHO, the reason he didn't make the final -he wasn't comfortable running 5k tempo and couldn't kick as he normally can. Yes, he would have trouble outkicking Lagat and co. but, on top of his game I believe he would have stayed close to them through that last lap. All 4 that beat him were well inside the 13.42.3 he needed. I think the run in the heat would have given him some improvement for the final. But there's no way he would be able to go with a 4.57 last 2k.

while I secretly agree with HardnFast and Lebusqp, I am not sure if I can agree openly publicly on CR.

If it will gets approved, that yes I fully agree :)

In this case the analysis is done against Gebre in Berlin ...

He just has had a bad day in the office ...  :)
