I get bad stomach cramps after running events.
I have scoured the previous threads, i see others get this during running, but mine is always afterwards and is a little different to what others have described.
This leads to diahorea most times. Other times i can be excrutiating pain and feel unwell for hours afterwards.
This mainy happens in fun run type events where i have pushed myself and i can do 10km or 100km and the
cramps still only kick in afterwards.
Melb oxfam was the worst ever. did a fast time, never had a hassle and then was wreething in pain all night and the
next day. I took buscopan, panadol but nothing helped.
i dont think it has anything to do with nerve and is possibly a bit mental, given the fact i can complete an event and then
fall into a heap afterwards.
I also do not think it is related to what i eat for breakfast and not having a coffee makes no difference.
this has only started a few year ago, previous to that i have been fine.
Anyway have any suggestions? Would love to hear form you.
thanks

I have the same problem - it can happen after a 10 km run , or 30 . The pain & diahorea can last for 3-4 hours after, and seems to be a function of how hard I run . Doesn't seem to happen much during winter , and I'm always fine during the run . One thing I have observed is that drinking an electrolyte / sports drink seems to help - during a run + after . Up to 2 litres . I recently ran out of sports drink powder and went running with water only , and followed up after the run with water - but the cramps & diahorea came back . This happened for 2 successive runs, until I could get more powder , then the problem gone.
I'm looking for something that diesnt have so much sugar though - as I don't think I need the energy from sucrose in Gatorade .
So somehow I think the issue could be related to hydration / osmotic balance in the guts ? But that doesnt explain why it is largely in the lower abdomen , not the stomach ?

I was similar, anything hard or over 15kms and it happened, and once ended up at the Medical Center thinking it was my appendix it was so bad, but when I went dairy free it went away 100%.
So perhaps do a simple test on yourself and go dairy free for 1 week and see if it helps? Another runner recently had the same thing happen when he was diagnosed as lactose intolerant, so maybe he could share his story.
All the best!

I sometimes get bad stomach cramps too, but only after a long hard race. I just drink powerade or something and avoid solids for a few hours until my stomach settles. It has more to do with how hard I ran and for how long than anything else. I then start back eating with something light ,like fruit and yogurt.
Not a worry really.

I disagree, it should be a worry. Bad stomach cramps, diarrhea, symptoms expressed above by others, is not normal for running or otherwise. It should be a worry. Apart from that it takes the enjoyment out of running.

Just be aware that you could actually be twisting, strangulating or herniating a bit of bowel or some other internal organ. Particularly as you describe the pain as "excruciating" and long lasting maybe you should get it checked while it is happening.
