Bought a new battery for my HRM at Bunnings and when it stopped working (within a few weeks), I went to replace the battery again and noticed it had leaked within the unit. It won't work now with a new battery.
Do you think it's worth contacting the battery company for compensation ?

absolutely! Or perhaps Bunnings as a first stop. HRMs are so expensive that to have one destroyed by a battery leakage problem would be frustrating. If it's a Polar, you could try calling Pursuit Performance helpline and see what they say. They may have had this problem before.

If they were a cheap no-name brand then maybe no chance.
If one of the better known brands then i'd certainly shoot them an email at least.
There were no problems with the HRM before you installed the new battery ?
I assume it was a similar type / rating ?
It's rare that quality batteries leak these days unless subjected to heavy loads like a short circuit, or an appliance that is dodgy.
Good luck and let us know how you go.
Edit: Not sure of your HRM, but charging non-rechargeables in a device designed for rechargeables will cause them to leak.

It's just a cheap one, but still I think I'll fire off a letter.

You may be able to fix the HRM. With battery leakage, it is often corrosion on the battery contacts that is the problem. Giving the contacts a good (but gentle) rub with some fine-ish sandpaper might do the trick.... or not.
I think you are very unlikely to get compensation from a battery company.
