Given there are a whole bunch of new Perth CRs this year, I thought I'd post this in the general section rather than the Ultra or Trail section,
21st December is the 45k 'Six Inch' Trail Race. This is the perfect introduction to trail race/ultra/fatass race for those wanting to try something different. It is run along a fairly challenging course from North Dandalup to Dwellingup along the Munda Biddi trail. (start is about an hour south of perth) Last year there were 10 starters I think, with a wide range of ability - most of them CRs. (Dave1678, Nate, Trailblazer777 and MBully are the main people behind it) For those not sure about the distance, you could do it as a team. Much more information through the WAMC board and TBs site. Colin Francis also wrote an article about it in a WAMC newsletter earlier in the year. I hope you all have a think about it, and I'm sure TB777 will be able to post a link to more information. (Champagne at the finish!) This post has been edited by anampofepistat: Oct 8 2008, 08:54 PM -------------------- 2009 Goal - SUB 3 Hour Marathon

For anyone thinking of running the 6' and is unsure about taking it on, I'm running with Kathy and Suzy as a leader/pacer or whatever you would like to call me to teach them and help them through the day. I will run at their pace or slow them down if I think it is to fast, so we can complete the course in one piece, if you are considering or would like to try trail running for the first time you are welcoming to join the group. I have run this course extensively and would like to get more people in WA to try trail running.
If you are interested and need more info you can PM me here or on the WAMC board for more info. Mark B |

Hopefully some recon runs of the 6 inch track course in the next month or so, so wacth this space for details on those, usually a 2-3 hour run which will give you a good idea of what to expect on the trail, and help you with navigation on the day if you choose to run it solo or as part of a team.
More detailed info on the WAMC msgbrd @ http://wamc.proboards41.com/index.cgi?boar...=498&page=3 But feel free to post HERE or there in connection with the 2008 6-INCH run, and we will try to answer any questions you have, although try my FAQ page too that may answer some of the common questions about this race @ http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/run6inchfaq.html -------------------- ---

This sounds really interesting, trail running really appeals to me. I will have to see how my running is going by the end of November but would like to give it a go. I am sure I can cover the distance in some way but there is no way I could run all of it.

I am sure I can cover the distance in some way but there is no way I could run all of it. That's one of the good things about Ultras and trail runs - walking is generally expected. I did my first two trail races last year and found it hard to change my mindset that it wasn't a failure to be walking for significant periods. Once you do accept this, it's more fun! Yep walking is a thing you have to get used to as a strategy thing. The basic plan is to walk all the hills as a means of conserving energy, but this does depend on your race plan and the course. I believe in a 25 min run/ 5 min walk schedule but on hilly courses I walk the hills and run everything else. Over time you get to know how you body is coping and adjust the plan to suit. Now I'm more confident of my ability and know my body well I do run longer and only walk as a means of keeping my heart rate and fatigue down. The main rule in Ultra is keep moving forward at all cost, never give in or stop, unless for health reasons!
None of this applies to Dave or Nate as they are not human. |

Good to see some new blood contmeplating the Six Inch. The race starts at first light about 5.30am with daylighht saving so the first few hours should be nice and cool. After that it heats up, so some running during the day would be goood heat training.

I'm sure if I do this I will spend a lot of time walking. The thing is I have never done one of these ( besides some long pack marches etc when I was younger ) and will be going into it blind. I will get into some volleys asap and see how I go. I will try some longer runs and maybe do a few hours of 20-25 min run / 5-10 walk to start off with to see how I go and gauge it from there. Good to see some new blood contmeplating the Six Inch. The race starts at first light about 5.30am with daylighht saving so the first few hours should be nice and cool. After that it heats up, so some running during the day would be goood heat training. If I had more time I would be a definite but will try and train up for it now regardless ( with the aim to finish and not necessarily quickly ). I will get back to you with times and distances etc over the next couple of months and see if you think I would be ok to complete it. As I said I like the sound of this but do not want to waste anyones time. |

Champagne?! I'm going to seriously think about having a crack at this. Someone needs to bring up the rear..... sj *LOL* hahaha seriously though SJ with your 4.30 in the Perth marathon this year you should be able to make it in well under 7 hours...maybe 6 if you go for it...otherwise therte is the relay option... I was in about 4.40 (marathon time) condition when i did it in 7hrs in 2006. More like 4hr-4hr 20 shape when I did 6hrs 10. -------------------- ---

Recon run #1 ? Saturday 7am November 8th from cnr North Spur and SCARP rds...see Munda Biddi map. 12km,22km and 44km the most likely options although you can always vary to suit whatever you want to do. e.g. make it into 32k for example...
http://www.mundabiddi.org.au/ From the WAMC msg brd; @ http://wamc.proboards41.com/index.cgi?boar...=498&page=5 Saturday morning group from Darlington (near Mundaring) is a great way to get used to trail running...anyone who hasn't been there doesnt know what they are talking about. I have been there many times, and will continue to. http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/ru...9/run6inchfaq.h tml#Logistics and did I mention http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/ru....html#Logistics just in casie I havent said so in the past you might want to check out http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/ru....html#Logistics or maybe http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/ru....html#Logistics and also http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/7549/ru....html#Logistics 1st of many Draft start lists: The current IN's; 1-Dave K. 2-Nathan 3-Trailblazer 4- Mark B. (trailMaster, leading a "bus") 5-Kristen D. (on holiday over from Colorado USA) 6-Kathy (ready for a new challenge) 7-Epi (did pretty well last time should be faster this time) 8-Bernadette (could be a major threat to womens record) 9-Steve (major international exp has to count for a lot) 10-Sal (major international exp has to count for a lot) The current MAYBES; (in random order) 1-Suzy? 2-Victor? 3-Hunna? 4-Gunner? 5-coops? 6-Rob D. ? 7-Rob B.? 8,9,10-Dave C. and two mates. 11,12-Lyndie? and John? ( both from QLD) 13-Carol (from Colorado, USA) 14-Colin F? 15 Mick F? 16-Rebecca D.? 17-Kaye? 18-Cherie? 19-hills group people perhaps? So 21 is easily possibly if half the maybes turn up and most of the IN's stay in. So everyone out there reading this board add your name and confirm or deny whats on this list ASAP if you dont have a login ask Dave K or Phil W for one, or post it on the non-members board... I think we should get some footage for a six inch yoUTube video this time round... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I proved last year that Hill Training is a requirement by having to bail at the 22 Km and then walking the last 11 km for the experience. I was looking to repeat 2006 and do water support at the 22 km and 33km points but the relay option is tempting if some one is loking for a partner. Regards, Trent any one intereted in the relay SMS 0 4 4 8 8 7 1 9 0 7 Pls or reply to this post. good to see some interest in 6 inch from cool runners, it really is a great event and having done all 3 six inches I would thouroughly recommend it. It is a different kind of 'race,' I like to think of it as the ultimate in freedom, running through the hills with a hydration pack that contains everything you need - How good is that!
There will be an official clock this year and definitely some bubbly at the finish line as well as a nice BBQ (Why not BYO meat, leave North Dandalup with it frozen and by the time you finish it should be nice and thawed ready to cook TB recon run sounds good I'll probably be there for something - probably the 44k option but we'll see. -------------------- Nate's Blog

No can do this one I'm afraid which is pretty disappointing. I was hoping to shuffle through this one but unfortunately this falls on my daughters birthday ( I didn't pick up on this when I first read the thread ). Looks like I will have to aim for 19.12.2009.
Best of luck to all that enter, it sounds like a great event and I am more than a bit jealous |

SJ; Cool! Anaconda stuff is probably good prep for 6 inch especially in regards to terrain Suzy is doing Anaconda I think, and she was in the first ever 6-inch and is a likely starter again this year?
Training runs for 6-inch need to work up to about 32km minimum, preferably more around 35km... be good to see you on wamc msgbrd too... Nate good to see someone is up for the 44km option...btw Dave is the driving force behind this Recon run, its his idea I'm just being the messenger getting the word out there... carrying meat during 6-inch now why would one want to carry extra weight! *LOL* I'd be leaving any BBQ foods with my wife I think. BBQ sounds good though, hopefully people will stick around and enjoy the day, its a lovely spoit for a BBQ/picnic is sleepy Dwellingup... A good option for some runners has been to talk family/friends along as support which is very valuable in regard to drinks, car shuffling, and just being around during and after the race...Some even decide to mountainbike sections of the course, which is a great idea...So having a BBQ/picnic afterwards is something they can be part of too and soak up the atmosphere. Six Foot is the name of the track through the blue mountains which hosts a 45K "marathon" each March. Six Inch is copy cat event. Hope to see you there! |

and in the WA version there are some sections of single track, maybe slightly wider than 6 inches but it's a nice sentiment.
Latest news is we currently have 15 starters of all different abilities. Both the Male and Female race records could get a shake up this year. -------------------- Nate's Blog

are any of the starters 4:30 marathoners/equivalent by any chance? I am just trying to gauge whether I'm up for this yet or not. part of it will depend on whether my husband feels like giving me up to the 30+ ks training thing again this year.

Yeah there are a few runners who would be around 4:15-4:30 for the marathon so you wouldn't be alone that's for sure. I would encourage you to give it a go because it is a lot different to a standard road marathon in the sense that it is not as intense. The ground is softer than road so it's easier on the legs and although there are hills, many people walk most of the hills to conserve energy for later. I believe that if you can run a marathon you can complete 6-Inch. Take the plunge, or at least come along to some of the recon runs that are happening over the next few weeks to try it out.

6 Inch is now on facebook. So if you are on facebook login and then cut and paste the URL
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34190987803 into your addressbar to get to the six inch page on facebook. So far in the first 24 hours we have 4 members already. I have a dream that maybe my wife will come ride a mountainbike (or better still run) with me on long runs one day when we can afford to get one of those bike trailers for our little one to sit in...could be unrealistic, in which case I'll keep going it solo. I know at the Saturday Hills group in Darlington some spouses walk a few km up the trail and then meet their spouse back at the bakery after they get back from long run... Remember that Recon run #1 is this saturday 8th November 7am at cnr North spur Rd and SCARP Rds...a very tough (hilly, hard terrain) 22km the most popular option into Dwellingup. [although I know Nate (24hr race in Caboolture this year and 3 six inch finishes, 3.10 in Perth marathon this year) plans to run from Scarp Rd to Dwellingup and back to cover 44km, but not for me to cover almost the entire course distance beforehand this time.] At the other end of the scale if your plan is to do the 6 inch as a relay (about 22km legs), there is the possibility of a 12km option instead... Also if you want to ramp it up to 30km or more that is possible too... hope to see you there... This post has been edited by trailblazer777: Nov 3 2008, 07:22 AM -------------------- ---

I think I have to come off the maybe list for this TB. I have been thinking a lot about it and after anaconda I am all raced out. I am just going to spend the rest of the year (at the very least) running for the fun of it without training for an event.
I really hope to jump on board next year, though. The kids will be that little bit older then and it will be easier to get away to train properly. I love the idea of running some of the Munda Biddi. serena |

no worries serena, hopefully next year then...the six inch is mostly about enjoying the experience and being able to deal with the challenges sufficiently to be able to finish, then one can think about times maybe...
Hope to see some people at Recon Run #1 this saturday! 0700 cnr North Spur and SCARP rds email me if you need any directions to get there... -------------------- ---

Directions to get to tomorrows Recon Run #1;
1-Freeway south, 2-left into Mundijong Rd, 3-right into South West Hwy, 4-along south west Hwy towards Pinjarra. Ignore North Dandalup Del Park Rd turn, continue towards Pinjarra, ignore Fairbridge Rd on your left , 5-THEN turn left into Alcoa Rd which becomes North Spur Rd, continue on this 6- until the very wide (2 lanes) gravel Scarp Rd intersects at the top of the hill. Conveyer Belt is nearby. If on South West Hwy you get to Adelaide Rd or even worse Pinjarra-Williams Rd/Paterson rd, or the town of Pinjarra itself you have gone too far south and need to go back to Alcoa Rd. Note that for 6-inch the race we start at Del Park Rd, cnr Whittakers rd. This post has been edited by trailblazer777: Nov 7 2008, 08:54 PM -------------------- ---

Was great to be out there on the trails again with kangas, emus, good conversation and awesome scenic views!
RECON RUN #2 is on Saturday 29th November. more details as they come to hand but probably focusing on the area around Del Park Road this time, so maybe a bit easier this time. -------------------- ---

6 FOOT aspirants should consider this race as a good way to build a case to enter 6 foot...
Current likely Start List 1-Dave K (6 inch record holder, and 2.59 marathon this year, plus 6 foot completer, tough to beat) 2-Nathan (3.10 marathon this year a WA ultra legend now, and in his 4th 6 inch) 3- Mark B. (trailMaster, leading a "bus",and very experienced) 4-Epi (did pretty well last time should be faster this time after his 3.14 and 3.19 marathons this year) 5-Bernadette (Canadian trail legend) 6-Kristen D. (on holiday over from Colorado USA) 7-Kathy (ready for a new challenge, and being coached by a world class athlete should help) 8-Steve (major international exp ) 9-Sal (major international exp ) 10 Rob D. (completed both 6 inch recon runs this year) 11 Roy (completed both 6 inch recon runs this year) 12 Isaak 13 Duffer 14 Coops 15 Dave (Crogs) (also running in the Sahara desert soon) 16 Jason (Crogs Friend from Ireland) 17 John N. (from eastern australia, military? background) 18 Lyndie B.(from eastern australia, military? background) 19. Rob B. (3.09, 3.14 marathons this year) 20-Trailblazer (keen to saddle up for 3rd 6 inch but worried about risking ankle, lack of recent long runs, but with a 3.55 marathon this year might have a go) 21. Christian (Switzerland) 22 Ursula (switzerland) 23 Suzy (the first woman to attempt 6 inch, Suzy is a total legend in triathlon, running, orienteerin, adventure racing and so on. ) Runners at the moment from Australia, Canada, USA, Switzerland, and Ireland giving 6-Inch an international flavour, and also interstaters too. The current MAYBES; (in random order) 1-Victor? 2-Hunna? 3-Gunner? 4-Carol (from Colorado, USA) 5-Colin F? 6 Mick F? 7-Rebecca D. (womens record holder with 5.53 in 2007) 8 Tom? 9-Kaye? 10-Cherie? 11-hills group people perhaps? 12 Serena (maybe next year?) 13 others..e.g. maybe Lachie,Heinrich perhaps... Also if you have a page on Facebook there is now a 6 Inch Trails Run "group" ..you can get to it through my facebook profile...or just email me with the email you use on facebook and I will make sure you get an invite...OR if you are logged into Facebook now try cut and pasting this Facebook URL; http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=34190987803 I plan on revamping my 6 inch webpages this summer if I can find the time, and possibly some new better webpages about 6 inch being constructed in the near future by various people, hopefully not just me... So looks like 20+ is the likely field size this time... only a few weeks to go until December 21st 0530 Whittakers Rd (cnr Del Park Rd), North Dandalup (near South West Hwy north east of Pinjarra.)... shaping up to be a very memorable 4th 6 inch! Just got home so thought I'd post a quick update. Fantastic cool conditions today were really appreciated by the runners, with new course records being set by both the men and women. Craig Dufty 3.36 I think, Dave Kennedy 2nd a few minutes behind. Epi 3rd and Nate 4th. Bernadette Benson smashed the old womens record with a 4.40, leaving me a distant 2nd in 5.32. Many thanks to the organisers and helpers, and to Mark for doing an excellent job pacing me through to my first ultra finish.
A great course, definitely recommend doing this one. Suzy |

Nice to see Suzy conquer 6 inch in a time which I might add is well under the 2007 Womens course record. Wish I could have stayed on Marks bus for a bit longer...
1st (course record)Craig Dufty 3.36 2nd (under old course record) Dave Kennedy 3.39 3rd Craig Berg 3.57 4th Nathan Fawkes 4.00 1st Woman Bernadette Benson 4.41 (smashes old course record by more than 1 hour) 2nd Suzy Thomas 5.32 3rd Lyndie Beil 20 starters 20 finishers. I was last in 7hrs 00min 58 seconds...after being still 15th at 22km, 12th at 17km, and 7th for the first 90minutes... My ankle packed up for the day (mostly just localised fatigue I think) at about 4 hrs in, so had a difficult walk-run to the finish, but still a fantastic day for me, and everyone... First 30km (about 3hrs 30) was good, but my last 15km (also about 3hrs 30) was total struggle/shuffle run and lots of walking torture due to my ankle refusing to cooperate.... I think Nathan has emailed full results to R4YL. photos coming soon. I wore my cool running hat again... This post has been edited by trailblazer777: Dec 22 2008, 02:05 PM -------------------- ---

Sounds a good run, one day i'd like to think i'd make it over to the west (never been there at all), interesting to one of the runners as Christian Marti a fellow Trans Gaule finisher this year (i do recall him saying he was coming over to visit family) and an entrant in 2009's Trans Europe , don't know that this run is specific training for that sort of madness though

We caught up with him on the way home and gave him some cold water, he'd been running for about 1:45 and had 8k to go - what a champion and I'm certainly envious of the trans Europe adventure. -------------------- Nate's Blog
