Any news on what is happening with Olympic Park and its theft by Collingwoods Athletics Australia moles Fildes and Eddie McGuire. What sort of venue will track and field be getting to replace it at Albert Park and will we be sharing it with the South Melbourne soccer mafia?

Yes - been very quiet on the whole OP thing - still no public comment from the conflicted AA President or the celebrity board member Eddie on whose interests they are bettering. How 30 blokes on an AFL playing list get to destroy the heritage and history of a whole sport and change the future of it is totally beyond me. Why has no one from AA or AV with a leadership role stood up and said
- "NO WAY" and fought this, even if the state government had sealed the deal. The silence is just condoning the decision. The $50 Million is not just for Athletics - it has to do about 6 different projects including getting the Pies moved in to OP. At least embarrass those responsible for this decision and shame them. Resign in protest or coup the Athletics Traitors off the AA board.

If it really is the best decision for Athletics future - why won't Rob Fildes face his membership on the back straight of Olympic Park on Zatopek night and explain why it is better and how he has put Athletics not CFC first. If he had any respect for current & former athletes and coaches he would get a microphone and face the music. How could this possibly be the best call for aths....especially when now the funding looks seriously inadequate to get aths to Albert Park and OP demolished for footy.

Why would athletics leave the greatest sporting precinct in Australia and possibly the world? OP was meant to be reserved for Athletics - the AA president was also on the OP Trust I found out - it just get better and better.........

And you forgot the other reason they are on the board - and that is to scout and steal our athletics talent for footy. They were never interested in athletics, why would you want to be on the board of an 'individual' sport - when you are supporting a team sport on tv, and a club director. It was a AA naive board who let these guys into the sport in the first place - and we are paying for it now.
So much for their contacts in helping the sport with a major sponsor...and on it goes...

In the sporting pecking order in Australia, there are approximately two thousand light-years between AFL and athletics. The interests of the AFL, and the Collingwood Football Club, were always going to take precedence in any conflict-of-interest. Money, power, influence, votes. These are all things that footy has, and athletics doesn't.

So I was staggered at the stupidity that Athletics Australia showed in letting Eddie McGuire anywhere near the sport. This is a man who loves Collingwood like most of us love our children... and a man who probably couldn't tell you what distance Herb Elliot ran, which events make up the Decathlon, or how far the steeplechase is.

It's akin to having a guy wearing an ice-hockey mask and holding a chainsaw knock on your front door - and letting him in.

AA has some serious answering to do.

And don't forget the Premier is a Collingwood man.

The latest scandal is the personal meeting the Collingwood F C was said to have obtained with Police Commissioner Christine Nixon to get her advice on the progress that Ben Cousins was making with his recovery from drug addiction. To assist them decide if they should draft him.

would take Nikes and addidas Factories with it, but will make running much better for it.

From The Age, today:

A Government source said: "They want a modern stadium to accommodate crowds of 10,000, state-of-the-art facilities for the VIS and Athletics Australia and the redevelopment of Olympic Park for Collingwood and Melbourne (football clubs). They also want new soccer pitches for South Melbourne Soccer Club to keep them happy, but it simply can't be done for $50 million — something has to give."

The crowd figure of 10,000 would include 5000 seats and standing room for 5000 people.

The source said an initial budget request of $60 million had been rejected by the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

"Victorian athletics is probably going to be the loser in all this," another Government source said.

But don't despair, fellow track fans. I'm sure that Atheletics Australia board member, Eddie McGuire, is battling hard for us - ensuring that athletics doesn't get reamed by, say, the Collingwood Football Club. :)

this is only slightly off topic :

last weekend, the footbal match (soocer in yanks) on a stadium with brand new exellent athletic track - hosting each year top meeting, Dubnica Sloavakia.
The footbal fans destroyed stadium during teh match and injured police etc, but what is worst for athletics - they did throw lots of firecrackers and burned off holes into brand new track, which now has to be repaired again.

so again footy destroying athletics.

from the reports, Eddie was not spotted among the hulligans, so he seems to be cleared at least from this incident

Not sure if this has been covered elsewhere, but the Victorian Government has now released the plans for the Lakeside Oval Athletics Facility (the 'State Sports Facilities Project') - see http://www.diird.vic.gov.au/ssfp

The Government is calling for feedback via the online form . Those passionate about Victorian athletics may wish to provide their feedback.
