I am in the process of organising an ultra “road” race to be held in Jan 2009. I am giving notice here, as it may not appear on calendars for a while.
The proposed date is Sat Jan 10, about 8pm to 8am. It will be an overnight 12 hour or 100km race. My long term goal is to conduct long (12hours +), accurately measured races on a fast course, that qualify as road races, and are certified distances for record purposes. This event is actually a one off test event to evaluate the course and setup for future longer races. So I have selected this date as a “replacement” for the Gosford track race, but it may continue if it proves popular, (with organisers as well as runners). I know this clashes with Bogong, but I picked the date for a number of reasons and I doubt many would do both, if they were a week apart. I am about to submit applications for Council approval, and then, subject to approval, will get the course certified and accept entries. The race will use multi laps of a 5km course. The lap is that used in the Nthn Beaches CR Challenge I will start another thread soon, for a Sat night training run, next month. This can be a time trial, as I will test out timing methods. I’m thinking any distance up to 40km. Note there is a short section which is poorly lit and will need headlamps or a small torch. I will post more details as they are confirmed and invite progressive comments and suggestions. In the interim, expressions of interest are sought here from competitors and helpers. This post has been edited by Sportsman: Oct 20 2008, 10:04 AM -------------------- I'm a fast runner, trapped in a slow body.

Sounds great. I would love to do it and would encourage as many local runners to support a local race!
I'd be keen to do the night training run if it didn't fall to close to GNW! Maybe next run could be a marathon from Manly to Palmy and finishing at Newport Arms... gotta be 42k's? Happy to get involved. |

I am interested as I said on Saturday, but it is official once it is on the web isn't it?

Ohhhhhh yeh!!
Doing the 100km would be a good warm up for my 6FT prep. More so, its a road event, something that i don't enjoy as much (Yep, i am getting out of my comfort zone and run races thats not within my level of comfort!) Happy to help out with the organsing too. PM me please While my training partner Beaver is out running B2H, this 100km "local' run would be interesting too. -------------------- I run like I mean it!

After running on this course on Saturday and speaking to Sportsman about it, I think this could be the first of many succesful events in Narrabeen. The course is great - a fast, flat, 6 foot wide bike track that hugs the water almost the whole way around. It is a great place to run and has a great place to set up some aid tables etc. as well.
I also ran on the trail to the west of the sailing club on Sunday and this also has heaps of potential for an out and back based Ultra. It is a completely flat trail with much of it hugging the water. There are very little tree roots or rocks to trip over. It is almost 100% in the shade which makes a daytime run a possible option. I am not sure if it would be a 5k loop but it would be close. Perhaps even a 10k loop incorporating both sides of the sailing club? 10 loops of this for a 100k run would not be boring at all. Anyway, plenty of options, all of which are great. Right behind you Sportsman and I am happy to help organise (even though I have committed to doing B2H). Having an event like this is Sydney is great news. BTW - count me in for the training/test run as well. -------------------- Shooting for sub 3

I missed running the Gosford 12hr as it clashed with B2H.
Having an alternative is great but I'm afraid Bogong will win every time for mine. Great initiative Ron, might come along to the trial run. -------------------- |

20 laps at 7 minute pace in the dark. Looks so easy on paper......
I can be there as a helper. I'll leave the 100kers for when the ordinary marathon gets passe. |

Sounds good Sportsman. Good idea to fill the void left by the demise of the Coastal Classic at Gosford. Looks like SMC will have to find another gap in the calendar for our 6/12 hour event we have on the drawing board. Good to see NSW getting a few more events on the calendar.

Tempted.......but not sure I'd be ready for the full 100k, so like the sound of the 12 hour and less than 100K option.
Count me as a possible and I'll give this some more thought and see how the training goes. |

Any chance of including a 50km ultra?
I am sure a few people would be keen for this option. I would struggle to complete 100km in January but would be dead keen for the shorter version. |

This sounds great!
I have a special affection for Narrabeen, as it was where I lived for the first eight years when I emigrated to Australia i.e. 1965-73. In fact, for a time I lived almost on the proposed course. January in Sydney can be hot and humid, even at night, but never mind, this is just what is needed (the race I mean, not the heat & humidity). Good luck with it. Don't think I'll be able to make it this year as I'm already committed to running the Hobart marathon the week before. But I reckon I'll pencil it in for 2010. The 100k is to give any runners who want to aim for the Aus team, or set a good 100k ranking. You want to be carefull here and prevent any potential tensions. Before the race, it should be clear if it is certified or not, so there are not issues after with ranking age records etc. Otherwise, great initiative, I have overseas visitors that time in my hause so not sure this time, but definitely will make it priority for future years, I was looking for 100km fast accurate road race in cool conditions, so night shift ideal -------------------- 2008 : 20 km racewalk VRWC,

An update to answer the queries above.
Applications for permission to use the reserves have been lodged with the local councils. I need these approvals to satisfy AURA sanction. The race is now listed on the 2009 AURA calendar, and will be on the CR calendar soon. I don't plan to have a 50km option, but could possibly add it later if 12hour/100k interest is low. I have indicated 30/40 runners to the councils, who are concerned about noise issues, as the course passes a lot of units and houses. So if I need to limit the numbers, I prefer to allocate all places to the 12hour/100k runners. I expect the get the approvals, with some conditions including an information leaflet drop to the locals. The worst case scenario might be that I will have to reduce the lap to 1.5km, which will avoid all the residences. -------------------- I'm a fast runner, trapped in a slow body.

Am slightly confused. Will the event be primarily a 12hr race and you do as many kms as you can? Or is it a 100km race with a 12hr timelimit? Because me wont have any chance of bringing up 100kms in 12hrs, but am quite happy to do it as a 12hr.....

If 100k runners don't get to 100k at 12hours, they will get a finish place based on distance ran, as long as they complete the 12 hours. I will spell this out in the race rules. Pulling out at 50k, or anywhere, in the 12 hour is ok. -------------------- I'm a fast runner, trapped in a slow body.

There was some discussion about this event at our Bushrunners 10km last Sunday (Berowra). Quite a bit of interest from a few including some past participants at Gosford.
I for one am very keen to give it a go. Good time of year and great location. -------------------- |

This is still looking like a good idea. Brick -------------------- Brick's Blog?
There are 10 types of people in the world: those that understand binary and those that don't!! Anton Krupicka What separates the difference in performances then? 1) Genetics 2) Confidence. However, very rarely does anyone maximize number one, so if you can maximize number two (and you are training effectively) you’ll end up being able to beat a bunch of people that maybe on paper should be beating you. |

Definitely the best way to get from the airport is airport shuttle - just google Northern Beaches airport shuttle - there are quite a few. It will only be slightly more expensive than public transport and way easier. -------------------- "I was watching a marathon and saw one runner dressed as a chicken and another dressed as an egg. Thanks Sportsman, If I need a pre-dawn power nap like at Adelaide 24 hour, we could all refer to this as a 'Nan Nap' NAN 12 Hour has a certain ring to it though. and if you did as well as you did in GNW - you could call it a nanosecond Maggot!! -------------------- David -
I thought I couldn't so I didn't - now I think I can I have Why did it take so long to discover that? but as Tim notes -speed is sex, distance is love- but with my speed in ultras I might miss out on both |

Sportsman, Count me in. |

Looks like this event is going to be held right outside my front door.
I would love to run some of it, but I see places might be restricted to the 100km runners. The Marathon was hard enough for me thanks. I would be happy to help though. |

The Marathon was hard enough for me thanks. I would be happy to help though. That's one letterbox I won't need to "drop". I now have the approvals from the 2 councils, so it's all set using 5km laps. The only outside detail I need now is an IAU Label, which should be a simple matter after course measurement. I will update the AURA page details, and hopefully a web site, soon, with entry forms, information etc. -------------------- I'm a fast runner, trapped in a slow body.
