Hi all

I was just wondering if anyone has had pneumonia and how long did it take to recover before you could run comfortably again?

I flew to Singapore on 21st November and got the chills, a fever and a cough during the flight. When I arrived I went to a pharmacy and got some cough syrup etc..., just the standard stuff. As I am here in Singapore to work, I soldiered on, having good and bad days. After 7 days of fevers I went to a local doctor (last Friday) who believed it was virul and gave me antihistamines, cough syrup, panadol etc... He said if I still had a fever on Monday to come back.

After spending 80% of the weekend asleep, and still with a fever this morning, I went back to the Dr and sure enough, he heard pneumonia in my right lung and sent me off for xrays. I have been put on two separate antibiotics (one of which there is a slim chance I might have a reaction to so I have the ambulance number just in case!) and have to go back and see him tomorrow morning. I am due to fly back to Sydney on Wednesday, but even that is up in the air now as the Dr may decide to keep me here for a few days more.

I have not been able to do any exercise since I flew over, and feeling like I do, with shortness of breath, lethargy and the rest, I feel like it will be a long time off before I can start running again. Has anyone had a similar experience and how long did it take to recover?

Thanks
Karen

I had pneumonia at the start of August.

I was able to run (slowly) again within a few weeks, but had to keep the distances short and couldn't maintain any pace. It took me 8 or 9 weeks to get back into any serious running and 10 or 11 weeks before I was "fighting fit" and running my normal distances (I average about 100km per week).

Every time I started to train too hard, I paid for it and ended up being unable to run again for 5 or 6 days, so I would suggest that you take it really easy and listen to your body when you start to recover.

I recently completed the GNW 100km without too much trouble. With only 3 weeks hard training between full recovery and my taper, I was surprised that my overall fitness didn't appear to suffer too much. It seemed that the little running that I did do was enough to retain at least some fitness.

Well I've officially got Pneumonia!

Timeline of events:

Had a cold around end of May, ran a 10k race comfortably well, about 3 days later found out I had the flu. (Cold symptoms were above the neck which is why I still ran)

3 weeks later ran the perth marathon but pulled out after 14k with heart problems (was racing for a pb, but the flu probably took more out of me than I realised, thought I was recovered)

About another 3 weeks later, again started with the cold symptoms but this time the symptoms were below the neck so I stopped running immediately. With no improvement at all after 5or6 days and still not running thought something not quite right... busy with work, and doc booked out, plus weekend, didn't see doc until day 11. Chest x-ray revealed pneumonia (acute - hopefully 3-6weeks...) Now on meds plus antibiotics.

So a tough couple of months!! Now up to 12 days of no running (although I did try a very light 20mins around day 5 - not good)

Wouldn't wish this on anyone... sounds like a 2-3 month recovery, so will now need to reassess goals this year. Have dropped a couple races already, and revised some goals. First of all to get rid of this chest infection, and then to lightly return back to running (probably including some x-training...)
