Considering racing the Long Course Tri at Huskisson in Feb. Has anyone raced there before and could give me some feedback about the course, atmosphere and the festival itself.
Thanks guys.

This race is a must do for all East Coast based athletes, it is a ripper. The course is fantastic, swimming across J/bay with the rising sun, a beaut ride course to sort out the bunches and a pancake flat run along the waters edge!
The location ranks amongst the best in Oz, huski is stunning and the pubs not too bad either for afters.
Crowd support is awesome, look out for the Balance Tri Club tent, yellow and green. There are sure to be several load spectators underneath yelling encouragement, just dont be caught walking past!
This race was Shot'is and my first ever triathlon in 2006 and we have been back every year since. Emo puts on a fantastic race weekend with something for everybody.
Saturday is short course and Sunday is the long course. Shot'is and I will be doing both as a great Ironman training weekend.
See you there!

KB,
I am shocked at your suggestion that I might let my ratbag husband use my log in for such things!
Well maybe the doctor is still using this log in but it can be our little secret ok?

Agree with everything said above! the course is fast, especially the run which is pancake flat except for 1 sharp hill.
I had my best race there last year and will be back this year for sure!

I'm afraid I won't be there, although I have to agree with the setting. Haven't ever raced down there, but Jervis Bay is just one of "those" perfect spots isn't it
Unfortunately, on that very same weekend is another race at one of "those" perfect spots - the Trial Bay Triathlon up at South West Rocks. Really unfortunate clash which we raised with the organisers - but they figured that the races are that far apart (geographically) that it wouldn't upset too many. There's probably only half a dozen people from each town on the mid north coast that are probably in that category I guess.
reminds me of another race worth mentioning - an off-road triathlon at Wiseman's Ferry on 29th March (which I won't hijack, but will start another thread about)

The hills on the bike are 'rollers' and best described as undulating. There is nothing steep on the ride. The vertical scale on the profile does exaggerate them unnecessarily.
Last year's event was well organised. I'll probably head down and remind the body what this triathlon thing is all about.

Yep, raced last year & loved it!
Rolling hills for the ride & fairly flat (from memory) for the run
The atmosphere is great because the Festival starts on Saturday with the short course stuff. Also, cylce racing and other events through the day.
Sunday is the big day for most & the crowd cheering last year riding through town was awesome!
Looking forward to this event with about 20 of my favourite people.
GO BALANCE!!

I have to do it now because I have a friend coming over from Canada who will be doing this race and she'll kick my arse until it's purple if I wuss out.
Either way it's going to hurt.

quick question....is it a run to the water start or deep water? if it's a run, errr any tips? i've never done that before.
also, the elite website says that the bike spots in transition are pre-numbered (but it looked like a generic event run down list that mentioned this). does anyone know if they are pre-numbered at husky or is it first in best dressed? how do they work out who gets the best positions (ie ones that are easy for dunderheads like me to navigate myself to!)?

For the long course:
Deep water start. Nice one as well

transitions spots were allocated for the LC. Not sure about the sprint though

Yep. 2:15:39 for me.
I had a very average swim - I'm still not used to the fact that the ocean is not a pool and has lumps.
My bike was good and I ran/walked the run leg to be nice to my dodgy hip.
I wasn't last - I beat an 82 year old.
Helmet did very well in the long course and posted a 7 minute PB over last year.
The Balance crew were well represented and had a great racing weekend.

Like last year, I had a great race and felt pretty good all day. Stayed relaxed for the swim, and felt great out of the water. Bike was great, steady on the first 2 laps. A group of about 10 caught up to me at the beginning of the last lap and were blatantly drafting of each other. All expensive time trial bikes with zipps, aero helmet... I picked up the pace and caught them and passed them a couple of kms later. They were happy to sit on my back wheel. I tried to shake them off and worked pretty hard, but the bastards just stayed on my back wheel. They didn't seem to worry about the amount of insults I was throwing at them. Anyway, I let them off. Came off the bike and settled into a good rythmn for the run. A pro, Lisa Marangon I think, caught up to me and I was happy to stay on her heels. she picked up the pace on the second lap and I wasn't feeling so good then so let her go. A couple of cokes later, and I started coming good again, so accelerated for the last 5km home.
Swim: 34:35
T1: 1:39
Bike: 2:24:30
T2: 1:46
Run: 1:24:57
TOTAL: 1:27:30
Highlights of the day:
- On my last lap of the bike, a volunteer at a road crossing was showing a signs saying: "Dogs on road!!". Hopefully didn't see any..
- I wanted to pee right from the 2nd lap of the bike. Usually stop on the side of the road, but I was having a great race and thought ok, put the dignity aside and do like everyone else. But I couldn't, I don't know if there is a technique, but I had to wait for the start of the run to go to the public toilets.
- I got a penalty in T2... A stop and go because I unbuckled my helmet before racking my bike. The TO took about 30s speaking very slowly to explain me the rule and how this can put my safety in jeopardy before he left me off again. I didn't know the rule and sure won't forget it...
- How good was Pete Jacobs at the presentation. Saying he was close to passing out in the last few kms on the run because he was flat out to stay clear of Crowie who was closing in.
6 weeks left until Port with 6 Foot in the middle. Can't wait!

Will,
Great bike and run. Like you say there are some seriously fast guys out there. Amazing that you went from 18th to 51st having gone 10 minutes faster. I think the swim was longer this year looking at the times.
I think I will stick to long distance running. Much less gear involved and less hanging around.

I enjoyed the day very much yesterday at Husky. I was disappointed to not have a spot racing but at the same time did some very loud cheering from the sidelines. It was brilliant to watch all of my favourites plus a few extras doing their thing yesterday. How good did Winky, Shot'is & Helmet go yesterday?? they are all on fire at the moment, with Port only 6 weeks away, I think they have the game covered. Will & Rooster both had brilliant races. I just loved cheering for you all.
I have to say a huge congrats to JimmyJack or better known by Balance as 'Laces'. He flew around the 5k race on Saturday afternoon and showed the big boys how to run. He finished first in his age group & 7th home overall... I'm a very proud mummy
Big hugs to Ice also, all things considered he enjoyed his day.
Ohh... i've already spoken to the race director & won't be missing out again next year!!
Cheers,

Great effort Will. That's an impressive time and as long as you don't go too hard at 6 Foot you should smash Port IM.

Regarding Port, I learned the hard way last year what a different ball game ironman is. I have 6 weeks left to add some long rides and long runs into the legs. Regarding 6 foot, I think I might finish very close to the sweeper this year...

I agree with everyone else’s comments that Husky is one of the most enjoyable races on the calendar, for all the reasons mentioned. I absolutely loved it and had a sensational weekend.
There was a bit of drafting, in fact one cheeky BRATS guy got busted by the motorbike TO for drafting me! That gave me a good laugh. I did feel sorry for him though, as I’m the slowest rider I know. He must have really been struggling if he couldn’t get past…
Wow this is my first CR post in 9 months. I stopped running in July last year with a stress fracture of the pelvis and didn’t run a step until January. Even then it was a slow build up and I only did my first run over 1 hour about 3 weeks ago. Husky was a watershed for me, it’s so good to feel that I’m a runner again! Couldn’t wipe the smile off my face on that run course.
The weird thing is that on the run leg I beat my last year’s run time by a few minutes. In the lead up to last year I had been running like crazy, while this year I haven’t done any speed work or any long runs in 9 months. I don’t understand it, but I’ll take it!

Wildthing, Pete Jacobs does open water swim coaching at 6:15pm Mondays and Tuesdays at Freshwater Ocean Pool. A few members of Northern Suburbs Tri Club attend and have improved their swimming markedly. Pete is a very affable and unassuming bloke and he did OK at Husky too!

Hey KB!
I sometimes go to Pete's squad. It is not open water swimming, but a stroke correction class at the Freshwater rockpool. It is on every Monday and Tuesday. Just turn up at 6:15pm and jump in the water.
Cost is $10 a session.
see you there!

I had the helmet call made on me too! In Sunday's race.
I was pulled up as I departed T2. It is not a mistake that I make.
No point arguing. TOs do a largely thankless task and I don't expect them to be infaliable

He says he racked his bike, then unclipped his helmet and then adjusted his bike (which was already racked) once his helmet was unclipped.
He says the TO waved a yellow card in his face and then gave him a lecture about knowing better.
He was then allowed to continue out of transition and onto the run.
Arguing with them only gets you disqaulified.
But from what I saw on the day their time would be better spent enforcing the drafting rule.

Mine was totally justified, and I thanked him for explaining it. It was my fault, I should read the rules before...
I think I lost 30s, but I used the time to adjust my bib and quickly down a nutella sandwich before the run!
