I have been diagnosed with a kidney stone measuring 8x3mm. The stone is too large to pass via conventional methods so I am now waiting to have laser treatment done to break up the stone. Some weeks ago I had a very very painful episode when the stone entered the ureter (tube that runs from the kidney to the bladder). Under general anaesthesia my urologist placed a stent to keep the ureter tubes open to allow the kidneys to function normally. I am told that I should drink more water but thought that I already drink enough.

In the mean time I am still running. This is after advise from my urologist that it's ok to run while the stent is in place.

My runs are not too intense as I sometimes feel some discomfort around the kidney area. Another negative aspect of the stent is the sensation that the bladder and busting to go for a leak however there is no more than a trickle.

There's not much info on CR relating to similar experiences.

Has any other runner had kidney stones and still managed to run?

If they had the stones removed was their running affected afterwards?

Have there being re-occurring issues with kidney stone afterwards?

Cheers

Hey Sailaway, sorry to hear you are 'stoned'

I don't have any experience so am really no help at all. In fact, I've heard that passing the stones is more painful than childbirth, and in the episode of Seinfeld Kramer's screams could be heard for miles! So that's not very comforting either.

It's great that you're still running and that the specialist is happy for you to keep running.

It seems that some people are more susceptible to getting kidney stones than others but once you get more than one stone, other stones are likely to develop. You can look at your diet to avoid certain foods that may help in preventing further stones.

All the best and I hope you don't have to wait too long for the laser treatment and to when you are all back to 'normal'.

Sailaway, cant comment on the stent and running while you have it in, but your description of feeling like you are busting and can only produce a trickle sounds very much like dehydration symptons that i suffer if I dont keep the fluids up, when you do produce the trickle it is of great relief but it can be sort lived unless you keep the fluid intake up. cheers and all the best, hope it is all sorted soon, so you can get back on a real high

Have you thought of actually getting stoned? Maybe the marijuana will take any pain away allowing you to run freely. You'd probably just end up running to the local store to get some chippies but that's normal cravings for runners anyway.

The wanting to pee sensation is often because of microscopic blood in the urine, related to the stone and/or the stent, which irritates the wee passages. There isn't much you can do about it except drink more water which dilutes the blood out a bit. As well as helping to flush out any more tiny bits of stone that may break off in the meanwhile.

Lots of people, runners and normal people, have unsuspected kidney stones and run, brush their teeth and negotiate with Telstra for years with no ill effects. Well, maybe not with Telstra.

Running will only be affected afterwards during the short recovery period from the operation and anaesthetic.

People who have had kidney stones tend to be stone makers. You can best avoid making more stones by avoiding episodes of dehydration and, depending on the kind of stone, some dietary manipulations which your stone doctor should tell you about.

Personally, if stoned while running, I try to run faster to get away. And I try to avoid adultery in the first place.

When the topic of having children raises its ugly head my much better half reminds me that I'm having the next one as she's done her bit; one for me, one for her and one for the country. So if passing the stone is like child birth then I better let my wife know we'll settle with 3 cause I'm not having any kids.

This busting sensation is even if I have drank lots. It's like the bladder knows there's a Foreign object there and its rebelling.

You hit the nail on the head. <_<

What I mean is yes there is a fair degree of noticable blood in the urine which I'm told by my "stone doctor" is normal and caused by the stent irritating the ureter. What I did not know was the cause of the strong desire to pee and then have just a trickle to show for the effort was due to the blood in the urine. Makes sense.

Thanks Old chook.

When you mention that you think you drink enough water, I dont think that drinking Colin's home brew counts as water!!!

I hope that you are able to get through this quickly as I am sure that we cant be without your essential services. Good luck with the stone doctor.
