As luck would have it i will be in Port Maquarie for a birthday party on Sunday the 5th of April. I was looking forward to doing my long run whilst in town, however i have just realised that this is ironman day! Was wondering if anybody familiar with road closures etc if this would be still possible. I am staying at Mecure central and planned to be out the door around 6am. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks TT

You should be OK if you are out at 6am. The swim will be underway about then so lots of places still to run. In fact you could do a lap or 2 of the run course probably if you wanted. You may need to stay away from Pacific Drive to avoid the pro's on the bike leg after about 8am.
Enjoy the beauty of Port Mac, its another cracking day here today..

Runbike, that is no good. Can you PM me with what sort of accom you are after and dates/how many people etc and I will see what I can find for you. Hope the accom provider you had didnt do the dirty on you? Most places are pretty full, but am sure we can find you something...

I will be watching some of the race so hope I get the chance to cheer you on! I am hoping to be doing the half in November...(pain permitting)

Cheers

TT, I was a spectator a few years ago at Port and did my long run on the Sunday morning. I has a coffee and watched the swim.As everyone started out on the bike, I laced up the shoes and followed the bike course from town, down to the golf course stopping along the way. I stopped for a while on the top of mathew flinders drive to watch the carnage of the back markers. It was a great way to watch the race. By the time I got back to town, the pros were just getting off their bikes and heading out to settlement point on the run. I followed them and was great to see all the different running styles of the top guys/girls doing 4 min k's after a swimming/cycling for 5 hours. I think I was on my feet for about 6 hours and covered about 32k from memory and the time just flew by.

P.S. Don't forget it is the start of daylight saving that day.

If you're trying to steer clear of the IM altogether during your run, then just head don Lord Street and on to Kennedy. That'll take you out to Lighthouse and you can duck up side streets to spectate if you'd like also. From the Mercure to the southern end of lighthouse beach via kennedy is about 7-8km

And whatever you do don't forget to watch the race... I spent 14 hours on the course last year cheering till I lost my voice... I reckon I almost had as much fun as the competitors
