I know, I'm weird....I've been told before. :vava:

This year I turn 42.195 yrs old and I thought maybe I should celebrate this unique occasion by running a marathon on that day.

The .195 takes me 71 days past my 42nd birthday and happens to end up on October 20 (a Tuesday).

Anyone else thought of doing the same? or some other similar phenomenon?

I'll post closer to the special date in case I get some takers to do a long training run (marathon).

I'd been running for a few years and everyone was doing marathons. I thought they were crazy; I had no desire to run one. I'd also seen new runners do a marathon way too soon and end up injured and giving up running.

Anyway I thought I'll do this once! So in the year I turned 42 I trained for, and ran, Canberra. The theory was that I'll only turn 42 once so I'll only have to run a marathon once.

Well, this year I turn 59. Yesterday I did my last long training run for Canberra. It will be my 6th Canberra and I have also run 5 Sydney marathons.

I didn't go in for marathons in a big way, but I didn't stop at one. I find the necessary training difficult, and I still don't do as much as I should. I much prefer a half marathon. But every now and then I need an extra challenge!

I'd have to do one this week to hit 42.195! But I like Linno's (first ) idea - do one when you're 42 and that'll do :vava:

Last weekend was my 32nd birthday, so I ran 32kms that day, and I plan to continue the tradition for every year to come! My birthday obviously won't always fall on a weekend, but I plan to do my best to run my "birthday distance" every year as close to my birthday as possible! Hopefully when I turn 42 I will be able to enter a marathon on the closet weekend to my birthday :vava:

I'll be 42.195 years old on May 27 this year. No marathons for me on that day.

How does the age calc work if you do ultras? Maybe double or triple your age for number of k's.

I've had similar thoughts but i was thinking of a 42.195 birthday party which would also be this year.  Who's coming-it would be June 23rd (a Tuesday)or the nearest weekend to it? Might arrange a CR dinner/drinks night for it I think.   I'll have to think of a venue!
As for a marathon-it would be nice but I have alot of work to do before I can do that again.  Closest marathon to my date would be Gold Coast.

Somehow I didn't think I'd be the only weird one :vava:

All good ideas. Certainly, if you can run a marathon in your 42nd year that's fantastic. Serena, I hope it works out for you!

I'm thinking I should have another one or two up my sleeve in case things don't work out exactly on Oct 20.

The party sounds good Wombat. I plan to have a run in the Dandenongs towards the end of April. That would be the closest I'd get to a Vic gathering.

Great Idea!  Mar 20th 2016 is the date for me and turns out to be a Sunday.  Googled the similar date this year and found Pasedena, Sahara (yikes), Rome and Connemarra as possibles!

Anklestrapper there is a Music Marathon in New York on Oct 20....

I have til 2023 (by my dubious calculation) to plan this one... a while away yet!
LBP I like your idea of running the kms of your bday...  mine is on April 22nd and I'd have to run 28km... but that's only 3 days after Canberra... maybe I can run 2.8km instead... well walk it... slowly?!

Anklestrapper - this is a very interesting idea.

My actual 42.195 birthday was around 21 March this year.

Does completing IM yesterday count as my marathon to celebrate my own 42.195?? :vava:

Enjoy!

Mine is around 20th March 2010 - a week too late for 6ft track 2010 - oh well. At the vey least a 42k in the same year shoudl be on the agenda.

I have a similar measure to you, LBP.

When I turned 21, my boss gave me birthday card in which he had written "You can still run your age in miles, but for how long?" I thought about it and decided it would be pretty cool to still be "running my age" (in miles) when I turned 60. If I'm still able to run 100km then, I think I would have done OK.  Although I don't test it or celebrate it each year with a specific "birthday run", I haven't let a year pass since then without running my mile-age.

Hmmm B- for sums?. Someone earlier said add 71 days so that's what I did - of course next year could be a leap year so that would throw it off..... :vava:

MattO, I might look into the music marathon. I'm learning guitar this year and maybe I could 'strum as I run'. :vava:  Sore fingers might take my mind off sore legs

Aunty K, that definitely counts as your celebration marathon for 42.195. What's a few metres between like hearted runners :o Looks like you're the first! Well done on completing IM.

Lynda, that's very close too and certainly counts. All the best for next weekend!

Serena, Looks like you'll be next. All the best with you training

The year I turned 40 I celebrated with an off road triathlon on my birthday in early January, then finished off the year with the Busso IM in December.  Not quite the same as running your age on your birthday but along a similar theme of craziness I think.

I did something crazy for my 40th also.

We did a lap of the Bay at midnight  :hi: with some of my bestest CR buddies.  Also, we had a Ambulance with flashing lights escort us part of the way, thanks to kb.  Finished the lap with champers and wine, what fun was that!!

Cheers!!

ps. I did my first IM also at 39 almost 40.

I like that - - wish I'd been a CR when I turned 40!

Hmmm I think any old 42.195 in the year of one's 42nd birthday isn't nearly imaginative enough after that - going to have to come up with something smarter (or more likely as well as....maybe a 'birthday month' event that people who have their birthday in that month can take part in - a birthday fat ass of some sort - not that I've ever done a fat ass but it seems to a be a 'make it up as you please' kind of race/run)  Oh well  - got till Jan next year to think of something.

I ran my first Marathon last year.  My goal was to run 42.2km (or thereabouts) when I was 42.  Although with my birthday being in March and there not being many marathons that month decided to wait until July at Gold Coast.

Just went back thru races this year and got Cradle Mtn 2 weeks before turning 42.195 and 6FT 2 weeks after turning 42.195.

The way I feel at the moment, 43 will be a struggle.

That would put me into running a marathon on Dec 11th (this year) - don't recall many marathons in Dec although there must be some.  I'll need to do some detective work and find the one nearest - I like the idea! :hi:

My 'D' day ( or should that be 'M' day)  Would be around May time next year which would set me up perfectly for Sydney.  Mind you considering that I am still building upto 5km it is a big ask.  But that would be my ideal goal.

Tues Feb 21 2013. Not sure I'd want to run any marathons in Aus in Feb but maybe NZ or some other cool location around the world. It does fall into the plan to run a different marathon every year of my 40th decade nicely though. Of course I should try and run one at all before I get too bold with plans.  :hi:

*Bump*

Is that what you do to revive a topic?

Well, 1 week to go till my 42.195 birthday. I'm still planning on running the M7 marathon course but will run out and back to halfway point. Hope it's marked (somewhere near M4 overpass I believe).

I plan on beginning around 4pm weather permitting (if hot weather predicted I may be leaving at around 3am instead). If you're out training say hi. I'll probably be in a Kembla joggers singlet but may dig out my coolrunning cap for the occasion. I will have a support bike rider at some points so water shouldn't be an issue. I hope to run a time around 3.30 but we'll see. :)

Any changes to this program I'll post closer but interested to hear if anyone else has thought of doing or done something similar in the 6 months since last post.

I have never thought of doing this, but am currently planning other milestones - e.g  running a marathon in each Aust state etc.

17 February 2010 for me.  What a great idea... will have to see what's available in February (maybe something in antactica).

this site is good for the mathematically challenged: http://www.timeandda...te/dateadd.html

edit: one in Tahiti, and one in NZ (Buller Gorge - that would be hilly, right?) on Feb 13th.

p.s. I hate you. Whose bloody idea was this anyway? I can't run a marathon - my myotherapist would disown me. Dammit, I'm seriously thinking about doing this - the one in Buller. My family is in Christchurch, so a good excuse to pop over for a visit (and stock up on duty free grog).

If the universe aligns, I will be just satisfied to do my first marathon in my 42nd year in 2010.  :)

and yay for my 200th post!

Well, it should be quite warm to start this run tomorrow. Does anyone happen to know the exact start point as it doesn't seem to be marked on the road? I can guage that it seems to be near the northernmost floodlight on the sports grounds. I'll just have to run a bit extra to make sure. :)

OK, done!

It was a struggle though. A bit too warm which led to dehydration and cramps unfortunately. Also the "walk demons" crept in too.

All the best to everyone else who has posted and mentioned some weird and wonderful things  :) they'd like to achieve

So I turned 42.2 (well, 42.195) today, but not being fit enough to run K2C (only run scheduled for the same day), I ran a normal marathon distance to celebrate the occaision and had such a great time!

I decided to not run trail, as I have many trail runs scheduled over the next weeks with Six Foot training, plus I'm not really marathon fit at the moment, so whatever I did, it was going to be a slow run.  I decided I wanted to run something with a challenge (hills) but also easy availability of water, food, etc and something with beautiful scenery.  So I chose to run my 42.2 along the northern beaches of Sydney.

I started at Dee Why, ran down to Manly, then back up to Dee Why for my first out and back, then from there I did a second out and back to Newport. The scenery along the beaches is simply stunning - I ran with a camera and managed to take 140 photos!!!! (have never managed that before!!)

I had a smile on my face pretty much the whole way - the weather was perfect, the scenery just amazing and I enjoyed myself so much.  No pressure of a race, just me running 42.2K because I turned 42.2 years today.  I had a variety of scenery too - road, beach, trail, golf course and a mixture of steep hills, flat and gental inclines.

I am so happy I did this - thank you to the person who originally put this idea out there.  For anyone else considering doing something like this, do it, you will be so pleased that you did!

I finished on Dee Why beach and was able to kick off the shoes and jump straight in the water afterwards - so refreshing.

Right now I am very tired, but very happy.   :D  What more does a person need on their 42.2 birthday?
